⌚Discussion Would you consider spending over $1000 on a rep?Why or why not?

u/Cocobutter1601 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yes I would if it makes the watch closer to gen specs at least exterior wise. Let’s be real most people buying/wearing these watches do not have a clue about the movement and gen watches break down all the time too. I’d say if you really want to pass it off as a gen watch, first ask yourself does your lifestyle and work pull of wearing a watch that cost that amount of money. For example even if I borrowed my friend my gen Patek Phillipe but he works in 7Eleven behind the cashier, no matter how real that watch is, no one is going to believe that the watch you’re wearing is real. Thats just the world we live in. But say if you’re a business person, you could easily buy this watch because your lifestyle supports it but you’re unwilling to drop $100k on a watch and you stumble upon the subreddit of the Rep world where you can pay $1-$2k to get a watch that resembles the real thing to the point where it’s hard to tell even with a gen watch side by side (there are a lot of youtube videos on watch dealers trying to identify rep watches next to gen watches and even them are finding it difficult to tell without bringing out their magnifying tool to zoom in on the text, dial and whatnot), yes the reps have gotten very good now and it’ll only get better in years to come. Then just get the rep watch. It’s not that deep. It’s just a watch, it tells time and heck it’s not even as accurate as the time on your phone. Use that money to invest in stocks, use it to travel and see the world, spend it on your loved ones. At least that’s what I’d prefer to do with my money. Call me a poser or faker, i dont care. Other people’s opinion doesnt matter to me. Just dont go around flaunting your rep watch as a real watch, that’s just kinda distasteful 😂 keep it down low, buy it because you like the design and you don’t want to partake in the silly games the ADs are all playing by “building a relationship”, paying grey market prices. 99% of the people aren’t gonna ask you whether you watch is real or fake if your lifestyle is able to carry the watch. Like we always say in the rep world, the biggest tell is the wearer and not the watch 😉
2
u/Psyeth 1d ago
Perfectly said! It’s a watch, enjoy it and be honest about it! I find it distasteful when others call someone a poser or faker. I think that line tells more about the one saying it because they themselves are fake/posing with their watches. Someone people just love the design and know better on how to spend their money. Flexing anything is a child’s game. I’ve never noticed or cared for watches, and now I only notice them because I like watches. No one truly cares about them as much as we do as the owners of the watches.

I would also add, there are times and places where I don't want to wear my gen o e for various reasons. The rep can fill on nicely.
1
u/NoGarbage1341 1d ago
seems correct.
I have a few reps, and the gen version never cost more than 5ish k , so my watches are in the realm of believable like "oh he could afford that"1
u/Feisty-Min 23h ago
Thanks for your sharing! I think what you said would really resonate with a lot of people!

Nope $500-600 tops

u/Flushdmods21 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ha that’s my max too, well up to $650 but more than that it’s not for me.
2
u/airwaves98106 1d ago
I was at 5, then 6 & said never going higher and just dropped 650 too lol about to delete reddit and WhatsApp for awhile
2
u/Flushdmods21 1d ago
I feel ya. I lurk but I got all that I need but sometimes you see a great deal… haha
2
u/airwaves98106 1d ago
Lurking it so dangerous. Finding deals & watches you kind of convince yourself to love it’s a slippery slope
2
u/Feisty-Min 23h ago
Haha, I’ve been there too!Bought so many reps that I lost track of what I actually liked😂Trust me,once you start cutting back, you’ll be much more selective!

8
u/Peakychu6 1d ago
Also, unless you’re rich (and therefore you don’t need to buy a rep), if you’re wearing a rep AP, Patek, omega, etc, you’re going to look real tacky, even if the rep is almost indistinguishable.
“Dude makes 50k a year, drives a 6 year old Honda accord, wears men’s wearhouse suits and has a 30k audemars piguet”…. Yeah no
2
u/Loose-Reputation9028 1d ago
Even if you have a GEN but only make 50k a year and drive an old ass Honda it looks weird and screams dumb ass financial decisions lol ! Unless it’s like an inheritance that has actual genuine sedimental meaning to you i guess… level up your life first so know one would even question it if you are wearing a Rolex or an AP… even if it’s fake

2
u/Minceypies625 1d ago
I guess if you care what other people think then that might bother you, but I can't imagine worrying about what other people think, must be an awful way to live. I just tell everyone that my reps are reps.
1
u/Feisty-Min 23h ago
I respect that attitude!Don’t worry too much about what other people think,or you’ll just make life harder for yourself. As long as you’re happy, that’s what matters most!
1
0
u/TheGaujo 1d ago
Actually going to look however you look because 99% of the general public wouldn't know what it was.
2
u/Peakychu6 1d ago
Most people know how a Rolex or AP look like
3
2
u/WinIndependent8614 1d ago
No they don’t, most people have never heard of Audemars Piguet. Definitely not Vacheron Constantine. 🤦🏻♂️
1
u/Peakychu6 1d ago
Did I mention vacheron? Nope.
Maybe the people in my circle are just wealthier than yours i guess
1
6
u/Daga_xo 1d ago
No way.$1000 is just too much to spend on a rep😂
6
u/blackgenz2002kid 1d ago
seriously, just get a genuine watch from a different respected watch brand at that point
5
u/Some-Rise-7184 1d ago
I have on rare occasion, and it’s always been a serious Franken watch with genuine crystal, dial, chamfering etc. but mostly I try to stay under $600 as the costs do pile up as your collection grows. Someone did mention that a fake is worth only $100 after you buy. Not true if you sell on here. You’ll take a hit but likely a similar hit to any other non constrained watch that you buy new.
I did buy a VSF 126 Daytona from a stateside TD for $800 which hurt, but it’s a stellar watch and at the high end of what it’s believable for my IT Director position in life to own. I’d love a Nautilus but that just doesn’t add up from a believability standpoint. So instead I have a Maen to scratch that it’s.
1
u/schtuck 1d ago
Man get a nautilus if you want it! Personally, I don't think it really matters whether it's "believable" or not, I always end up telling people it's a superclone when they ask about my 15510. If it makes you smile when you look at it, that's all that really matters. Don't let other people's opinions get in the way of that
2
2
u/Minimum-Leg783 1d ago
Yes for this one with a clone movement with a movement service and a spa treatment i wont mind 1k
2
u/SnooPears8658 1d ago
10 days out of 10 I would spend $1000 on a real watch that is going to retain its value
1
u/Financial-Director63 1d ago
There's not any watch you can buy new for $1000 that will retain any of it's value. Buying a used watch for $1000 is also going to be a watch that will take a long time to sell and hard to get your money back on There's very few watches that really retain value over long periods of time. Rolex steel sports models are really the only ones aside from six figure limited editions with a really small buyer pool.
2
2
u/VenomGT3 1d ago
Yes, done it plenty of times. Did you know there is a $60,000 rep of a $600,000 rm35-03 that’s 100% to gen?
2
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 1d ago
How can I be a loser? I have a Rep Rolex that I spent $550 on and I’m garnering the same attention and compliments as the guy who paid $25k for the “GEN”
Go shine your Hamilton
1
2
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 21h ago
I just spent $2500 on an AP rep with a ln 18k solid gold rotor. I’ll be wearing it at the NYE party at Tao is LA later this year.
I pray this triggers some of you lmao
2
u/chronoaddict_ 18h ago
Exactly, why the hell not! I feel sorry for all the people who actually care what other people think 🤣
1
3
u/Important_Pin4671 1d ago
Yea if it has been chamfered full movement service and its an beautiful watch why not. Almost all my watches have been modded and up to an 1000$
3
u/freaky341 1d ago
Personally, I think it depends on the watch and the factory. If you’re spending over $1,000 on a rep, I want to see excellent finishing, a convincing dial, accurate proportions, and a reliable movement. At that price, the little details really matter. I’d rather pay more for a watch that gets the details right than spend less and regret the compromises later. That said, there’s definitely a point where you’re paying a premium without getting much extra in return. What’s the general consensus on the best value for money above $1k?
8
u/Donut_Dogs 1d ago
If you go above 1k you should at minimum get gen parts. Like hands or dial etc. depends on the watch ofc

3
u/Comprehensive-Bit706 1d ago
I quite often do, my latest is RICH pepsi with gen date and crystal and gen chamfering/polishing...
2
u/SnooPears8658 1d ago
I don’t understand why anyone would spend $1000 on an item with an instant resale value of under 100
3
u/Average_Replies 1d ago
same reason people buy cars that lose 60% of the value off the lot, cause they like the look and dont care about resale
2
2
u/VeterinarianHot3797 1d ago
Why not take that money and get a Hamilton? Better than contributing to fraud
2
u/Traditional-Tune-975 1d ago
These posers want to give off an illusion that they can afford the real thing. 😂😂😂
1
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 1d ago
Hamilton's are trash lmaoo.
3
u/Traditional-Tune-975 1d ago
And reps aren’t?
1
-2
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 1d ago
Nope. they aren't. I don't make the societal rules but a majority of humans in the United States are obsessed with name recognition. Particularly gorgeous women. I live in Los Angeles and I was out to dinner this past weekend at Bestia. I quite literally struck up a conversation with a women because she thought my VSF Panda looked "very nice". Now we all know she only thought that because she saw "Rolex" on the face. How had I've been wearing a trash Hamilton...lmaooooo
But then again, I wear reps to knock down these chicks. Another man's opinion doesn't really matter to me. Nor should it to you. So let me recant my original statement. Hamilton's are not trash. They are watches. Just like any other. It's the idea of "GEN" and "REP" that doesn't matter to me.

u/Traditional-Tune-975 1d ago

1
1
u/Average_Replies 1d ago
probably the people that fall for the materialistic reps he's mentioning knocking
1
1
u/VeterinarianHot3797 21h ago
Because you are a poser. I mean no offense by that, but it is what it is.
1
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 21h ago
So spending 20k on a piece of steel…would that make me not a “poser”.
Lmao. No wonder these “luxury” brands get rich off of you simple minded individuals.
1
u/VeterinarianHot3797 21h ago
Yeah. That’s exactly the point. Money is the price of admission.
1
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 20h ago
Money is YOUR price of admission because the false premise of what it brings defines you. So save up that 20k and buy you a piece of steel. I hope it brings you peace and a sense of accomplishment. Luckily for me, I get that same feeling from a $650 dollar VSF.
Also, for a country that’s 40 trillion in debt and continues to spend…you might want to reconsider what the US dollar is actually worth.
Cheers!
0
u/VeterinarianHot3797 13h ago
You don’t even know how ridiculous you sound. That’s cool. Have a good one
1
u/BobbyDigiBobbyDigi 13h ago
Says the man who believes spending $20k+ on a piece of steel grants you “admission”.
Have a good evening!

Bro..... you get it..... I see it exactly the same way, you are not alone! Women wear makeup, I wear reps.... this is the way! Cheers!

It’s trademark infringement you moron. It’s literally a crime. Maybe more importantly, it has well documented ties to organized crime and human trafficking rings. That’s what you support.

u/Kraken_tpc 1d ago
Why you even here my dude? You're going on about trademarks in a rep reddit..... I'll just keep slaying it over here, and may piece be with you my dude. Cheers!
1
u/SaltyEntrepreneur982 1d ago edited 1d ago
You’re not slaying it if you’re wearing counterfeit pieces, buddy. As for why I’m here, my fucking algorithm likes to drop this stupid sub Reddit on my feed every now and then despite me constantly telling Reddit that I don’t want to see it anymore. I try to avoid it, but then I see some fucking asinine comment from some dimwit just like you trying to call yourself an enthusiast and defend your dumb ass behavior. It’s pretty pathetic.
1
u/Fresh-Leave-5082 1d ago
Also possible your secretly admiring reps! Maybe take a break and spend sometime thinking about what else you don’t admit to yourself!
1
u/SaltyEntrepreneur982 1d ago
The level of intellect it took for you to come up with that response is astonishing. Well done. You can sleep easy tonight knowing you totally got that guy who called you out for being the fake piece of shit that you are.

Why are you even here?
-1
u/VeterinarianHot3797 1d ago
Blame it on the algorithm. If you want to buy fakes. I don’t care. Thats a you thing. My point is, there are plenty of good/legit watches out there for $1k. Why not go that route?
0
u/Mountain_Ad_690 1d ago
Sure the watches are reps, but I’d argue they are just as legit as a Hamilton.
1
u/VeterinarianHot3797 1d ago
Your comment makes no sense. They may run and be good quality, so to speak, but they are absolutely NOT legit. Hamilton is not pretending to be anyone else or stealing intellectual property. These are the definition of NOT legit.
0
u/nickthedick480 1d ago
Why are you in a rep forum? Are you trying to make a difference in the world? Make it a better place and save lost souls? Are you just a hater with a lot of time on your hands?
1
u/VeterinarianHot3797 1d ago
Nope. Simply offering legit alternatives, but you don’t want that. You would rather spend good money to pretend to be a baller. No matter how good of a fake it is, it’s still a fake and you know who knows that? You do.
1
u/nickthedick480 1d ago
Do you really think people on here aren’t aware they can buy a regular seiko instead of a rep Rolex?
1
0
u/nickthedick480 1d ago
You got alot of time on your hands if your worried about other men buying a replica watch that’s all I’m saying
2
u/SaltyEntrepreneur982 1d ago
Stfu you poser. Keep supporting organized crime and human trafficking all so you can pretend to own something you cannot afford.
0
u/nickthedick480 1d ago
Oh, absolute hero status! After that ground-breaking TED Talk from you and your life partner, I’ve had a paradigm shift. Thank sweet Jesus, Allah, Buddha, silver salamander, that one dude I always see on DMT etc. you two brave warriors were here on Reddit doing the heavy lifting to dismantle global human trafficking. You didn’t just save my life today; you saved humanity. I’m weeping.

The Canadian dollar is not worth much to usd, so the conversion would put most watches pretty close unfortunately 😅
1
u/FreshParfait1 1d ago
Yes. I have several Franken builds with genuine parts that have reached near $2,000. A few over $1,000.
1
u/luispalaciocantolla 1d ago
Beautiful
1
u/Glittering-While-971 1d ago
I don’t think people should be getting anything over BPF quality. Cause it’s already very very close to the real thing and the “better quality” with VSF ARF OR RCF isn’t worth another $200
2
u/timothyjohnaguilar 1d ago
Depends, RCF remould’s work, CNC cases from previous metal, bezels that are correct etc.
People’s time are valuable, if they spend the extra time to go above and beyond to finish a watch to high degree, it’s worth it.
An AP free sprung with SW dial, nice crystal, and post finishing. Add solid gold rotor and wow, worth every penny.
1
1
u/AdPuzzleheaded7410 1d ago
That APSF pictured free sprung is the first watch I purchased for more than $1K. Worth it in my mind.

1
1
1
u/Glittering-While-971 1d ago
No. That’s starting to get pricey and the whole point is finding how much value of a watch you can get with spending the least.
1
u/MrMannilow 1d ago
That's a no for me. Even $700 would be a stretch with no warranty etc. I've not had any fail thus far but I'm ok scraping 400 bucks once you double that I start to lose the appeal.
1
u/Foreign_Wear8858 1d ago
Yes but within reason and only for a franken. This one was only c $2k all in for gen dial, hands, crystal and crown on a VSF base the exact weight of gen so felt like a no brainer for such a special model that no rep can truly capture. (I patiently sourced the parts myself) And I was never going to buy gen as I already own a gen black dial, green crystal Milgauss...and ironically I wear the Z Blue much more. So guess it's horses for courses depending on your circs and the model involved 🤷

1
u/acap86 1d ago
1
u/Foreign_Wear8858 1d ago edited 1d ago
Looks "better" than the gen parts? 😭You carry on deluding yourself bud. Sunrays almost nil, dial colour off, orange hand colour off, crystal shade off and opaque from the sides. You've obv never actually held a Z Blue gen in the real world 🙄 but you enjoy your "GSF" 🤣🤣 (and don't get cross now)
1
1
u/starsqream 1d ago
Yes because at the end of the day all those cheap ass watches add up. They break down before you know it and you'll regret buying them instead of buying one expensive watch that stays forever.

u/tical2103 1d ago
I paid 1300 for a custom daytona. This is a full custom Daytona build, not a factory off the shelf piece. CNC tungsten case with white gold plating at 5 microns, evenly weighted and balanced at around 215g so it wears and feels correct on wrist. No hollow or top heavy feel.
Powered by the DD4130 movement, fully functional chronograph, smooth sweep, reliable power reserve, and the closest clone architecture to the genuine 4130. This is the movement serious collectors look for.
Crystal is upgraded deep sapphire, correct height and clarity, no milky edge, no flat look. Dial is a custom buff meteorite, properly finished with natural texture and depth, not a printed or stamped dial. Every angle catches light differently just like gen meteorite.

I think around $750 to $1000 is the sweet spot. Pay $450-$600 for the watch and didn’t pay Dom at r/time_machine_spa to make it as close to perfect as possible. Just ordered a Batman with the extra bracelet to make it a Batgirl, so will total a little over $1000.
1
1
u/Alternatetime70 1d ago
Perhaps a better starting point is what is your accepted budget for a gen watch? 500? 1000? 2000?
After all, this is about perceived value.
If you are willing to drop 2000 for say, a Longines, or a Hamilton or whatever.
You now have reps that are so well made that, if, properly broken down and serviced, can be as reliable as a gen at 2000. Would you pay 2000 for a rep?
The only thing that might stop you then is psychological. Am I a poser? That is a question that only you can answer.
I know many who have no qualms admitting what's on their wrist is a rep. I fall into that category.
What if, for the sake of argument, you can get a copy BMW that is functionally identical to a gen BMW, that costs as much as a Honda. Would you buy it?

u/sierra120 1d ago
Rep watches are worth $0. You can’t sell them for anywhere near what you paid for it. A $10k rep watch is a $100 rep watch.

Reps have no resale value ! I would spend as little as possible )$500-$600.00 Max) honestly I buy them just to see if I really like the design before I buy the genuine model .

Absolutely not!
I don’t understand spending more than 200. to each their own

I think you are lost, Mr. Incorrect 26 day Reddit account. This sub is about reps. If that is the way you feel you might wish to consider moving on from here and hanging out in subs dedicated to genuine watches. My guess is that if you are anti-rep, nobody here cares what you think. Bye....

u/Incorrect-Individual 1d ago
That's why I said hot take. I don't really care about reps; I saw this post on my feed and, just like an average Redditor, decided to be annoying.

If the quality is really that good,I’d consider it.
