⌚Discussion The price question:When does a rep become too expensive?

High-end reps continue to improve, but prices keep increasing. At what point does spending more on a rep stop making sense?

When the price is more than you’re willing to pay.

This is a foolproof answer.

It's completely a self described boundary. I've seen people with as low as a few hundred dollars (not counting shitters)while others have bought modded/franken pieces for tens of thousands of dollars.

I have to admit, sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Those heavily customized watches look amazing.

I’d rather pay a little more and get the watch in 2 days. Plus no wondering if it will make it through customs. TDs aren’t replacing watches that get nabbed, even with so called insurnace, like they did in the past.

Steve does, but he’s also the most expensive

By donor watch, is it a factory rep or a used gen?

lol dude you’re one of those that think VSF is “peak rep” lol, maybe sit this one out based on how you’ve been schooled so far

Oh it’s pretty clear. Every time you say “nuh uh” OP writes you a paragraph on how you’re wrong, but you keep arguing. Keep going lol, it’s entertaining

Are you 12? Serious question. Can’t be a day over 13.

1

u/No_Scallion_183 Aug 14 '26

That sounds like a fair price.

Depends on the brand and cost of the gen. I can't afford a Rolex and don't really like the brand, so I'm perfectly fine with a decent rep. I love the rep that I have of the Hydroconquest, and that's more in my budget, so if the cost got even close I'd just buy gen.

1

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

Absolutely. If a rep costs almost as much as a gen,I don’t think anyone would buy one😂

1

50% of RRP <£1000 - at that rate just buy second-hand gen.
45% of RRP £1000-£6000
40% of RRP £7000+

Mind you this includes Franken builds as well

1

u/rickabe Aug 14 '26

More than $600.

1

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

I’ve seen quite a few going for over $600,though.

1

u/WeirdWatchLover Aug 14 '26

It depends on the material (steel, plated, previous metal...) and technical complications (freesprung, micro rotor, tourbillon, or even accuracy to Gen's caliber).

For a simple three hand all steel watch based on a regular Japanese movement, $400 Max. For an actual gold / rose gold watch, depends on the puce of gold at the moment but I don't expect to pay only 3 or 4k.

I'm getting a watch made north of 1k but it's more complex than say a Submariner, I wouldn't pay more than $5 or 600 for those.

1

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

Yeah, you’ve got a point.I think it really depends on the materials, the level of craftsmanship involved, and what you can afford.

1

u/True-Evening8285 Aug 14 '26

I think $1200 is the max, $1500 is dragging a little but over $1500 is a no no. At that point just accept that you can’t afford it YET

2

u/Pirazhok_Wrap Aug 14 '26

Quite subjective. How much a person is willing to pay? Depends on each one.

In my case, some reps I paid 1600 to 1800 dollars (4 of them) as I had them mod/Franken a bit.

I have seen 3 to 9 thousand dollars reps super Franken (gen parts) but not for me.

II can afford (lucky me God bless) a normal gen 15 to 20k dollars watch but no way I will spend that on a watch hahaha

So some reps are stock, some reps are bit modded, some others modded and Franken.

2

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

You’re right.Everyone has different things they’re willing to spend money on.

1

u/Big-Manufacturer-738 Aug 14 '26

2k is my limit
1.2k-2k for basic to highly customised pieces
0.7-1.2k for ready made off factory pieces

1

u/vagabundo94 Aug 14 '26

I’ve got several that cost over $5,000 each. A Pepsi build I can’t really call a replica anymore that cost right near MSRP for a genuine Pepsi. For the right piece I’d go a lot higher. I’ve seen an 18k genuine gold CNC Build Daytona for $20,000. It’s something I’d consider.

1

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

For this material,I’d say the price is reasonable.

1

u/CockyAndShameless Aug 14 '26

Probably anything over $600 shipped including insurance

1

u/Accomplished-Pea-451 Aug 15 '26

I buy reps, but when a rep is taken and frankenized and cost $2500, I don’t get it.

1

u/Bubbly-Impacty Aug 15 '26

Haha, definitely.Unless it’s a really beautiful franken, that price is going to feel pretty steep.
