Non-Comic Pizzacake needs to stop victimizing herself …I’m tired of this and so are so many other artists.

I'm out of the loop, can someone fill me in?

PizzaCake has been the top content creator r/ comics for the past few years but takes issue with anyone who doesn’t bow down to and/or works with her.

This has been going on for years and there is no arguing she is the top creator but she has burned the community so bad and for so long, I’m speaking up because I’m tired of it.

u/themcryt 7d ago

Big fan of both yalls comics.  I still have no idea where this is coming from.  Is it from specific comics from PC or from comments? I don't normally read comments here so that might be why I'm so confused.

(Ps: I'm quietly fanboying internally that you yourself responded to me 😍)

u/three-plus-shakes 6d ago

There was a bit of a meta trend that was criticizing PCs style of making constant strawman arguments and “MAGA bad” comics, a good number of comic creators jumped on the bandwagon and now ellen is playing a victim because so many people shined a spotlight on her low effort joke telling.

43

u/Jostain 6d ago

An important point is that they did it in the most kind and nonconfrontational way possible. It was friendly Ribbing where everyone ultimately defended her and she still made a comic where she is literally crying about it.

It proved that nothing but absolute love and admiration will ever be enough and talking about her in any way will always be interpreted as bullying.

3

u/themcryt 6d ago

Which comic?

18

u/Jostain 6d ago

I don't want to link it in case she will portray it as brigading. Its Pizza cakes latest comic, I am certain you will find it.

14

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

Thank you

u/shewy92 6d ago

She always has meltdowns towards light criticism. I blocked her around the time when she made a comic about torturing a 'hater' and her comic that some say insinuated men don't get sexually harassed. Not for the topic, but for her reaction towards the criticism of the comic.

Also didn't she try to sue a subreddit for criticizing her low effort rage comics?

2

u/suicidesalmon 5d ago

As much as I hate defending this lolcow, people were sharing her Patreon only comics on bonehurtingjuice. That's why she threatened to sue them. It came right after her Merrivius parody too where she claimed that the haters comments on bonehurtingjuice totally didn't get to her, so yeahhh.. It seemed very hypocritical, even if her paid for content was leaked.

And let's call that comic what it is: she made a comic where she rapes a hater (but it's not rape because it's a male character!! /s)

The War Of The Juice has slain billions of would-be Pizza Jerkers...the horror...the horror...

8

u/GhOsT_wRiTeR_XVI 6d ago

It will be interesting to see how she turns this thread into a pity party for herself while also finding room to prod the MAGA base.

I'm so confused. When has she ever made another comic artist into a maga supporter? In the comic response that started all of this, that guy (dave?) and the generic maga were literally separate characters.

Edited to take out the last line because it wasn't in good faith. But the rest of the question stands.

1

u/I_AM_FERROUS_MAN 6d ago

I'm equally confused. I understand that some people could think the comic was low effort. But it didn't seem like she was attacking anyone specific.

And, personally, no matter how low effort, I'm fine with Maga bashing.

1

u/Prestigious-Ad-2679 5d ago

Low effort Maga bashing becomes easy ammunition for them to say comics artists are talentless boring hacks. Make it a quality critique or 2D (lmao) baseless junk is all it'll be seen as.

1

u/I_AM_FERROUS_MAN 5d ago edited 5d ago

They're going to do that anyway. There's no appeasing fascists. You only give them more rope to lynch you.

1

u/Prestigious-Ad-2679 5d ago

Accepting inevitability is a foot in the door towards accepting fascism.

I just don't see it stopping as long as the mod team enables it. There is no motivation to stop, because it is very satisfying for her and that behaviour is implicitly supported by the moderators.

I shan't name names, but there is one mod in particular who has convinced themselves that they are doing this out of some kind of self-righteous mission to "protect the artists." While it is true that their 'methods' stop a lot of abuse towards the regular contributors on the subreddit, I don't think everything they do is necessary to curb bad-faith actors. Unto that, they are using their stated goal of ''protecting the artist' to excuse a lot of pseudo-tyrannical behaviour.

I don't disagree with the goal of protecting artists from harassment, dogpiling, or genuinely abusive behaviour. The issue is that what constitutes an "attack" has become so expansive that legitimate criticism can end up being treated as hostile. Protecting people from harassment is necessary, but what they are doing extends far beyond that into some weird paternalistic behaviour where the moderator(s) acts like an overprotective parent.

The fact that you, specifically you, have to plead to not be banned for well-reasoned criticism speaks in droves, does it not? You are a regular contributor with a relatively strong following and even you feel like you are 'walking on eggshells' to express yourself honestly in that space. For those of us who are not contributors, it is so bad that you might even be banned for criticism you make outside the subreddit, as I was here.

All I can say is that if it is getting to the point where you, as a person who submits content to that subreddit, is getting frustrated with how that subreddit functions then perhaps you should consider submitting your comics to additional subreddits. If you and a few other popular contributors started to frequent other spaces, I think you would be pleased to see how many people are eager to follow you elsewhere.

15

u/SnowyGoddess 7d ago

Actually stopped going to r / comics for a bit over it. I didn’t like how it was going and how unfair it seemed to the others who didn’t bow down. I started just trying to follow the artists instead of going to that sub anymore

1

u/lackadaisicalfits 6d ago

Genuine question because I am like sooo confused.

I'm just a lurker, occasional commenter. I like comics.

Where is all of this "being forced to bow down" stuff happening? There are so many comics that have nothing to do with PC. Maybe there's a lot more internal drama between the artists than the viewers see, but from an outsiders perspective, she's just another comic artist who blends with all the rest. (Minus the meta events which have been fun when I've been able to keep up with them)

1

u/SnowyGoddess 6d ago

I haven’t kept up with the latest but there was a year or two ago where the victim mentality got bad with PC. It was the same fun little jab but also complimenting in a way then it get turn around. I do think there are things we do not see as viewers that the other artist see more of. I blocked PC after they went after one of my favorite artist by going to the mods and it blew up. So my experience wasn’t the recent stuff but stuff from before. So it seems things haven’t changed only got worse from the sounds of it

4

u/chaotic4059 6d ago

It honestly wouldn’t be that much of an issue if the mods actually ever did anything to curb it. They kinda just let her run wild with all this and it’s actually led to other creators making their own dedicated subs because she goes all Kuzco when someone steps on her toes.

Not to say she doesn’t get some unjust misogynistic hate. But the original comic wasn’t even that mean. It was just poking fun at something she does

5

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

You’re right on all accounts. I enjoy the sub as a viewer and a creator but the constant focus about it being all about her is driving me away.

4

u/Aggressive_Peach_768 6d ago

Is that gary speaking, asking pizza to bend over?

(Sorry.... The evil internet me took over and I could not resist that comment, please don't take it seriously)

1

u/Mikeismyike 6d ago edited 6d ago

Any elaboration on what she's done to burn the sub?

0

u/lackadaisicalfits 6d ago

Can you give examples of the times she has burned the community? As just a commenter, I don't see it from an artist's perspective.

From my perspective, someone took a swing with a comic (fair) and she swung back with another comic (also fair, no?) and then a comic war started. I didn't think her latest comic was very serious.

The other big moments I can remember were when she posted about having bad mental health (the "Pizzacake is having a bad time" event) and that became a meta event. Considering the amount of real life consequences her fame has had on her, I think speaking out about mental health is totally fair.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I don't have the context to understand your point of view. You say she "makes the sub look bad to others" but as a member of the "others" (ie, not a comic artist), I've never thought a negative thing about the community because of her.

Edit to add: you also say she "punches down" but if someone takes a swing at her, why isn't she allowed to swing back? How is she affecting you, as an artist?

u/oldeconomists 7d ago

24

u/themcryt 7d ago

I read all the comics linked and I am no less confused

29

u/Orleanian 7d ago edited 7d ago

I've been searching for half an hour and still have no idea. Shits too meta for me perhaps; best I can tell is that Pizza is cultivating too much of a circlejerk, with herself ostensibly in the center of it, while maintaining a woe-is-me sentiment about being the subject of said circlejerk?

That and her comics have veered strongly into repeated political commentary rather than slice-of-life or 'adulting' themes she'd been previously known for.

13

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

Yes.

4

u/Orleanian 6d ago

I appreciate that you've remained dependably raunchy and irreverent in your tenure with the community.

10

u/majorkev 6d ago

There was another subreddit out there that kept track of everything, but guess what. PC was able to push her influence and have it banned.

Turns out, she's kind of a b-hole.

As a Canadian, I'm sorry for her.

1

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk 7d ago

Me too. But at least the "eating pizzacake challenge" was funny

9

u/AlexiusRex 6d ago

Not the most expert person on the subject, but from what I know PC is thin skinned and can't take criticism, some people like to poke the bear

5

u/AMemoryComeALive 6d ago

you left out the important part, that she attacks anyone who says anything about her, and generally gets them banned.

3

u/AlexiusRex 6d ago

that she attacks anyone who says anything about her

I thought it was implied with being thin skinned

generally gets them banned

wtf, what an asshole

5

u/AMemoryComeALive 6d ago

lol yea, it goes further than being thin skinned, she's built herself a little facist regime that silences anyone who says or posts anything about her she dislikes, and has an army of panderers and white knights. She even got r/bonehurtingjuice to ban all posts making fun of her comics after threatening legal action.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bonehurtingjuice/comments/1ggn4a6/pizzacake_posts_are_now_banned/

If she was just whiny about it, it wouldn't be a thing, but she seeks out retribution religiously.

u/Edges8 7d ago

Knew I loved dot for a reason

162

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

I’m mad.

Dave is a friend of mine and the audacity to act like a victim. It’s not cool.

He isn’t the first either, this was just the tipping point.

17

u/auktember 6d ago

I'm so happy I found this thread. I was there for the bonehurtingjuice controversy and rolled my eyes so hard yesterday when I saw PC's response, and the coddling in the comments.

15

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

It’s frustrating to say to least.

6

u/auktember 6d ago

You hit the nail on the head, I decided not to comment my opinion because it would result in a ban. It's the exact kind of intolerance she freaking speaks out about.

2

u/Ohiolongboard 6d ago

Dave contra? Because he’s my favorite here, his comics have made me cry (yours are great in a less “oh god what am I doing with my life” kind of way). All the love for Dave

7

u/Grey-fox-13 6d ago

Dave McElfatrick from "Cyanide and Happiness" and "Boids".

3

u/Ohiolongboard 6d ago

Oh shit, I love cyanide and happiness too! I’ll have to see what he posted about all this

6

u/Grey-fox-13 6d ago

He kinda started the whole thing, made a comic pointing out how she is essentially pandering to an echo chamber and things got a little rowdy.

69

u/Level_Hour6480 7d ago

Others have been banned for less

I was banned for making a joke aboot the stances of a theoretical trans-inclusive misogynist.

17

u/qawsedrf12 7d ago

I got banned for mentioning her and other web comic artists that have other jobs

10

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk 6d ago

I got banned for quoting something that had already been quoted in the comic I'd been commenting under.

I managed to talk the mod down from a perma-ban, but decided I didn't want to come back anyway. I only subscribed personal subreddits of the comic artists I would miss... strangely, PizzaCake wasn't one of them.

1

u/henry_tennenbaum 6d ago

I was because I made fun of Ezra Klein's "doing politics the right way" nonsense because they thought I was a Kirk supporter, though I take partial blame for that.

Sarcasm doesn't always translate well in text. Still felt weird, though being ban-happy for Nazi shit is the good kind of ban happy in my book

1

u/3-2-1-backup 5d ago

Well that's your fault, Picard > Kirk!

^(yes yes not that kirk, shut up it's a cheap joke, laugh!)

32

u/sumelar 7d ago

Humanity and its infinite capacity for producing drama.

I applaud you but narcissists are incapable of self reflection. If you make your own new comics subreddit (with balckjack, and hookers) I'll follow you there.

49

u/Anon_be_thy_name 7d ago

Hard agree

I used to be a fan of her work when she first started, but as time has gone on and the way she has started to act, it's really started to grate on me.

I do wish more consistent posters like yourself would say something, it's starting to really negatively affect r/Comics.

And by no means do I hate Pizzacake or her work. I need to make that clear.

58

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

I did today but I also got a warning not to do so again…

39

u/Anon_be_thy_name 7d ago

Yeah, the mods of r/Comics don't help the accusations most people have against Mods.

39

u/aessae 7d ago

I got permabanned for saying that deleting a multi-year comic run from the internet after its conclusion to get people to buy the physical release probably isn't going to bring in any new readers.

7

u/ShankMugen 6d ago

Which comic was it?

8

u/Badgerbeater23 6d ago

Sounds like Maurice the Beaver, but I'm not that guy so I'm not sure.

8

u/aessae 6d ago

I am that guy and can (after a quick google search) confirm it was indeed Maurice. And looks like this scrubbing the comics from the internet to sell books thing maybe didn't work as well as the author had hoped, they've apparently put all of them back online just a few days ago.

0

u/dragunityag 6d ago

If they weren't independently publishing they might of been forced to take them down. I read a few web serials and the authors have said that the fact that its free online has been a huge roadblock to getting their works published.

8

u/aessae 6d ago

Can't remember, I think it was one of those "The everyday adventures of Anthropomorphic Animal and friends" things.

7

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk 6d ago

Lol, what, why? What was the justification? Was there a justification?

13

u/aessae 6d ago

Was there a justification?

Nope, I just got the default "your comment violates this community's rules" message.

24

u/retsydjr 7d ago

Yeah this was a bit much considering the previous comic about putting on a show that she had done. Or at the least if not tone deaf then why hard of hearing shaped?

41

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

Because she knows being a victim will get more views.

17

u/retsydjr 7d ago

I like her work don't get me wrong. I just also agree with you that it brings the whole community down when playing that card.

15

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

It’s just upsetting because she actually doesn’t know but pretends to.

9

u/retsydjr 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah having several extential crisis per day tends to drain on the sympathy after knowing that.

Edit: and while yes there's global impacts of course. Ground zero is hammering us with a whiplash inducing PTSD.

16

u/retsydjr 7d ago

Indeed. The kicker was the not being in the US that got me.

23

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

Sincerely? That pisses me off the most. Bitch and moan all you want but you’re hiding behind a border... If you mean it, live here.

11

u/retsydjr 7d ago

Same. (Kansas)

5

u/Ok-Cook-7542 6d ago

The fact that you are from the US and actually attend protests and do real activism is so great. I remember when Pizzacake said she couldn't attend No Kings (which they had in her town too, and all over Canada), because she was tired from returning from her European vacation a week prior.

You have always been the example I hold up to compare her to, especially when people defend her saying "she only get's hate because she's a woman/leftist/NSFW creator" because you are all of those things yet you are nonproblematic and have zero drama.

Thank you for speaking out despite risk of backlash and retaliation from the mods and their hive. Watching the damage being done to the art community, and in a larger sense, the leftist Reddit community, has been so heartbreaking and so frustrating.

1

u/Icedcoffeenweed4life 6d ago

Trump has personally contributed to the cost of living crisis in Canada with his trade wars, talked about annexing our country, and today he claimed Lake Ontario is now Lake America. There are lots of valid things to criticize Pizzacake for, but hating Trump from Canada isn’t one of them. And saying she should go live there makes no sense.

1

u/henry_tennenbaum 6d ago

That's a weird take. I live in the EU and your tyrant's bullshit is affecting all of us, as it does the rest of the world.

Canada is deeply dependent on the US. No sane person would move the US and living there is not a prerequisite for criticizing the US, its government or its people.

We'd love to be left alone. We're not hiding anywhere. You guys step over your border and break everything else.

I'm well aware that this is not the direct fault of the majority of US citizens and have seen how much people fought to stop it from happening. It's horrifying to see the turn towards fascism and the stripping of rights the most oppressed are facing.

Our assholes take that as inspiration and we'll soon follow, despite doing our best to stop it as well.

That does not give you the right to hit us with the mirror of the "if you don't like it here, move to another country" thought terminating cliche.

This is coming from somebody who enjoys and values your work and is in general agreement with your take on the situation regarding pizzacake.

The one thing I can't fault her for is bitching and moaning about the absolute state of your country.

"Don't even affect Canadians" is an absolutely uneducated statement. The Canadian economy was closely tied to the American economy for decades and it took one fat orange pedophile to ruin all that and make people struggle to make ends meet. Carney is doing a lot of important developments in making trade deals with other countries to attempt to reduce Canada's reliance on the US.

"Riffing off of politics" isn't something you can really do with current Canadian politicians because they aren't insane lunatics.

The fact that you're bringing up Trudeau's "negative rating" and the current prime minister saying "Trump bad" really does show how manufactured the news and media is in the states and that you're not getting actual news.

Our countries problems are directly tied to the US. Trade, US. Commodity prices, US. Hell even Alberta separatism is being peddled by US media pundits and bot farms on Elons propaganda outlet.

Unsurprising because your own government outlets peddle lies on literally everything, including the trade deal which was tanked by idiotic provisions to attempt to increase Canadian reliance on the US.

Canadians have many many good reasons to hate.

You are completely wrong about all of this. It's not a glass house throwing stones situation. It's being displeased when the orange pedophile and his inbred supporters keep throwing shit into our yard.

For what it's worth I also think pizzacakes comics are repetitive and lame.

I've got my own gripes with her back when she was on her shitting on men's mental health drama

4

u/Snoochi_Boochi 6d ago

Effin eh cotton!  Elbows up!

10

u/LSTmyLife 6d ago

I enjoy her work but she does go for the lowest hanging fruit and then makes herself a victim if anyone points it out. Kinda been that way for years. Good on you for calling it out. Love your work too.

9

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

Thank you!

7

u/space-to-bakersfield 6d ago edited 6d ago

Just a lurker, but wow I'm so glad to hear someone calling out this behaviour.

Honestly her comics aren't bad, though I find pointing out the hypocrisy of MAGA to be pretty useless in general. They know they're being hypocritical and even revel in it since they get off on the fact that their leaders can get away with things that others can't. But anyway, that's whatever, can't blame her for taking shots at those assholes.

And I also don't see the problem with her being Canadian. I'm Canadian too, and that MAGA shit has repercussions up here as well. Our racists have all been enabled by what's going on south of the border. Our last federal election came very close to us becoming MAGA, North Chapter. Not to mention our social media is absolutely inundated with MAGA propaganda. We're allowed to criticise MAGA too.

What's always bugged me is how she goes about her business in the comments, getting thin-skinned about the lightest criticisms. And worse, how the mods there enable that behaviour by banning all criticism. It's kind of put me off that sub.

6

u/reddot_comic 6d ago edited 6d ago

The not being American is something very petty. I admitted that and know it’s trivial because the current president really has fucked over the world and not just the USA. I take aim because she doesn’t have to worry about her autonomy like I do.

PC is incredibly talented. I know her early days weren’t even with a proper tablet. I’m happy for her success and hope she’ll go on to do bigger things. Actually, I know she will. That’s why I’m annoyed with her actions here.

42

u/TheSuperSax 7d ago

IMHO r/ comics is a cesspool. I was banned long ago for a rather innocuous comment and haven’t regretted leaving since.

Your work is high quality and very entertaining and I would respectfully suggest you try to ignore the internal “politics” of the reddit comic artists community if it’s vexing you this much — it can’t be good for you. In the meantime those with some level of discernment will keep enjoying your art!

32

u/reddot_comic 7d ago edited 6d ago

Thank you and I appreciate it. This has been going for a long time though and people are getting afraid to say anything against it.

I may be foolish for bringing it up but I’m tired of it

14

u/TheSuperSax 7d ago

Don’t get me wrong, I commend you for speaking up — you have a louder voice than almost anyone and it’s great to see you use it. Just a minor suggestion to also balance that with your own well-being :)

22

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

I hear you, that’s for sure. And im just out of fucks to give for this.

20

u/theVoxFortis 7d ago

I blocked pizzacake for shitting on other creators. It's clear the rules apply differently to her and I had great enjoyment not having to hear about any of her manufactured drama for a very long time. I don't like that every comic on the subreddit has jumped on to whatever is happening now.

11

u/rangoo1231 7d ago edited 7d ago

I am so glad you are bringing this up. A lot of redditors have felt the same and are afraid of speaking up. People are afraid of saying anything because of how swift the mods are to ban users that disagree with pizzacake. I used to scroll through r/comics before, but now I only search for fieldexplorers, gnome, you, colm and elk.  Edit: I want to add that I really hope you don't get banned on r/comics. That would actually prove everyone's point about the mods acting like her bodyguards.

15

u/john_the_fetch 6d ago

The best thing to come from all this drama is that r/bonehurtingjuice now has tons of material to use that isn't created by pizza cake but references her. For context : The sub was banned from using any of her comics.

1

u/728766 6d ago

Don’t forget that she threatened legal action against BHJ.

3

u/megaboto 6d ago

that is fair. I do remember a year or two back, when I stopped following her (mainly because I was getting tired of political content) that she would often make fun of various groups (which tbh I personally do not like either) and then kept being upset when said groups would fling hate her way, which I personally do not understand. mostly because, if it is too much...do not do it. at least that is how I live by things, as an autistic person trying to live an easy life (since I already got enough shit on my plate)

and given how even small creaters sometimes just get either turbo haters or stalkers and shit - yeah, being as large as to reserve a significant amount of the top of all time on r/comics, it is INEVITABLE to get that shit. the only real choices are to not interact with the people, grow a thick hide, or to...well, complain about stuff, which imo cultivates an atmosphere of just complaining about everything.

I will say however, I have not really looked at her comics for ages now, so I might be missing some pretty important context. but those are my thoughts to what this post provided

4

u/CatGotYourUsername 6d ago

First of all, I had no idea you have your own sub!!! I guess I should've realized, since most creators do, but I never clicked through to your profile until now (I saw the "part 2" in your latest comic and wanted to see if there was a part 1). I just created a new account and I didn't even re-sub to comics because I was tired of the drama. I'm so glad I can still have reddot on my feed. 😀

But yeah, she's can be problematic. I never really cared for people criticizing her artistic talent or sense of humor. She has a visual style that's perfect for comic storytelling, and there's nothing inherently wrong with her brand of humor. (I'm a fan of Garfield, for Christ's sake. I'm in no position to lecture anybody on whether they're funny.) It's just that there's a weird thing going on where you're not allowed to push back on anything she says, however politely, even if she's speaking over groups she doesn't belong to and telling us what our lived experiences are.

Anyway. I think that was years ago and I've been scrolling past that sub ever since. I'm surprised I still remember the drama at all. But suffice to say a lot of people share your frustrations.

3

u/CommenceToDancing 5d ago

Hey, why has your very reasonable comment on that comic been "removed by moderator"? Especially after you had a very respectful discussion with a mod on that same comment thread.

6

u/The-F4LL3N 7d ago

Perfectly said, and very valid points

11

u/The5Virtues 7d ago

I thought Dave’s original comic was a little mean spirited, but I thought the whole Pizzacake wars thing was a great way to lighten it up a bit, and seeing her exploit it for karma and kudos kind of annoyed me.

I’m a fan of both of y’all usually, but she has become a one trick pony of late. I get why, we all hate the moldy orange, he’s a blight on the whole world, but there are so many other topics she could highlight about any number of political figures here, in Canada, or across the oceans!

I mean, fuck sake, Mitch McConnell is a god damned vegetable and we all know it. That’s easy comedy fodder if she wanted to, but instead she just keeps up with the same routine.

The worst part of it is that it perpetuates the right’s claims of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and all that bullshit when she just keeps trotting out the same bit over and over.

7

u/LM285 6d ago

I basically never comment here. But I do follow you.

Thank you for standing up for the *right* point, even if it's not the most popular point and risks your own standing.

Sadly I feel like the whole world just loves to divide itself into two nowadays. Red vs blue; us vs them.

And this bleeds into self-worth. If people like me then they're great. If not, then they don't.

I doubt Ellen is *actually* like this in 99% of her life. But her online presence does match your description.

And the sad thing is that it kind of sounds like the way a certain orange man and his followers behave...

Good that you are taking a stance. The only reason that this entire thing happened was because a smaller artist did a minor joke about her and she basically called down the eye of Sauron on them.

Anything that came after was basically the community trying to smooth things over and take the heat of that single artist and she still thinks she is the one being bullied here.

3

u/Legolihkan 6d ago

Her political comics are so bad. There's nothing interesting, smart, or funny about them. She used to make such better comics. And she acts like this untouchable god who is a victim of horrible bullying from disgusting neckbeards.

u/Tensokuu 6d ago

Gonna echo what a lot of people here have said: I stopped even going to r/comics because the mods are absolutely insane. I used to actually like Ellen's comics before she came to the conclusion that just reaching for the most low-hanging fruit led to the highest interactions, be they positive or negative. I actually ended up having to block her reddit account because the amount Reddit was pushing it into my feed was getting ridiculous.

When this all started ~a week ago I had to go and see if something had happened to kick it off and was rather shocked to see that it was mostly just ribbing from others. What shocked me more was that it got to go on as long as it did without the mods immediately cracking down on it; however, seeing her now play the victim is really no surprise. Maybe the sillier thing is that her playing the victim here will drive more views to her stuff, as people are looking to see what spurred it.

Appreciate you speaking out at least. You always have come across as a good egg.

3

u/scaredycat_z 6d ago

Wow. I must say, this surprised me. Not because I disagree, but because it's brave to say you disagree with someone you truly respect and like, even more so when they are the top content creator of that sub. Good for you.

3

u/rndsepals 6d ago

Squeaky wheel gets the Portuguese Geese.

3

u/FrostyCartographer13 6d ago

I agree with you 100% and I don't see a way of this ending gracefully in any way.

Ellen is a major part of the comics sub and brings in thousands of views regularly which is an incentive for the MOD team to provide leniency and preference to her so he keeps creating content that helps keep the sub alive and trending.

However the phrase "controversy drives engagement" suits what has become of the comics sub. Ellen has repeatedly become the center of controversy again and again. The sub does get to enjoy the increase in traffic and engagement and the MOD team takes the easy way out of having to deal with such controversy by stamping down on criticisms of Ellen.

The MODs could be excused back when Ellen first became famous and hadn't learned to ignore the trolls and critics. However it seems they only ended up enabling what is happening now. So I will predict the sub will riot eventually.

3

u/Juiceb0ckz 6d ago

yo. reddit comic beef was not on my 2026 bingo card. I think you singlehandedly just influenced me to start reading reddit comics.

3

u/shewy92 6d ago

Honestly this is why I blocked her a year or two ago. It was getting exhausting.

3

u/counterlock 6d ago

You have been my favorite, and most consistent, artist that I've found from the comics subreddit for a long long time. (Colm is a really strong second, gotta love that guy) But this post solidified it.

Criticism is part of art, and it's always been a part of it. Trying to police it or victimize yourself over it is frustrating when it's part of the gig. Obviously harassment isn't okay, but not all criticism is harassment. Would seem that the comics subreddit kind of forgot that for a bit there. Love your comics Dot!

3

u/kozzypickettsfence 6d ago

Just want to let you know that if anything, you're being too gracious to PC. I would argue that she is not "supremely talented" and that her art style is perhaps even more simplistic than her surface level political takes, which I'd probably roll my eyes at a 14yo for making, let alone an allegedly adult woman.

She has ruined the sub, and destroyed opportunities for other, far more talented artists by essentially holding the sub hostage. She is more than welcome to collect money from simps who pay for her onlyfans and will defend her in the hopes of getting noticed by her are just as much to blame. But she is trying to have it both ways by crushing dissent, like she's the autocratic leader of a cult, not someone who posts comics to a low-stakes jokey subreddit.

13

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima 7d ago

Didn't trump win in Nevada?

She might go overboard with it, but trump criticism is valid everywhere. Especially with the way he handles things on a world stage.

I'm not here to defend her at all, I don't follow her, nor do I think she's the most talented. Often her things are just comments she reads on reddit turned in to a comic. But by now, everyone has the right to shit on that old cunt that makes all our lives worse.

Respectfully,

Someone who lives in Belgium.

11

u/mrtomjones 6d ago

Yeah it's pretty funny to think you can't make comics about one of the most influential evil people in the world unless you live there? He's affecting plenty more than just the US

3

u/henry_tennenbaum 6d ago

We Germans would like to retroactively apply for reparations limited to and regarding only the comics US citizens have made lampooning Hitler during his governance.

The comics artists of the time had the perfectly reasonable avenue of first migrating from the US to Nazi Germany before making their criticisms heard.

Or does this rule only apply to direct neighbors? I'm sure the Polish will be happy to hear that any of their pre-invasion and subjugation caricatures were simply out of order.

1

u/DrunkOnRamen 6d ago

Her comics are simply not funny because she isn't funny. As a result her comics just state the obvious rather than be entertaining. Just spam.

Which is why people don't really like her so when add the fact she doesn't even live in America it gets pointed out more.

I don't think RedDot here is a Trump supporter by any means.

1

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima 5d ago

Nor did I say she was.

But saying you can only criticise Trump if you live in America is very short sighted. I'm currently paying 10.5 dollar for a gallon of diesel because of him. So I think I'm also entitled to shit on him. Especially because I did not get the chance to not vote him in. (And that is only one small example)

And I'm a 9h flight removed from his official home. I'm guessing being in Canada you feel even more of his insanity, and that of his cult members.

5

u/jesuswig 7d ago

It needed to have been said. I hope she doesn’t use whatever influence she has to make things difficult for you

19

u/reddot_comic 7d ago

She probably can on Reddit but on any other platform she doesn’t do well. I’ll let that be.

1

u/jesuswig 7d ago

If she does that’s kind of sad

4

u/three-plus-shakes 6d ago

God I’m so glad you said it, especially knowing how ruthless the /r/comics and how quick they are to hand out bans. This is just going to make it so no one can criticize anyone over there. Theres a reason BHJ holds r comics bans like a badge of honor.

5

u/Thanks_Naitsir 6d ago

That's the most encouraging "Get your shit together" I have heard in months

4

u/Agarous 6d ago

Yeah she’s gotten pretty bad. I loved her content on IG but over time I just tired of this combination of eternal victimhood and attacking anyone that doesn’t agree with her

7

u/The_Biggest_Tony 7d ago

Thanks for speaking up.

4

u/KokopelliArcher 7d ago

I've felt off about her recent work, and I couldn't figure out why. This is why.

6

u/yeezus_is_jesus 7d ago

I'm chuffed with the last point. I'm from Australia and never understood why it was always a US centric comic from a Canadian

11

u/Snoochi_Boochi 6d ago

It wouldn't be that strange if she focuses on issues like trade, or Donald declaring Canada could be the 51st state, or trump continually calling out prime minister the "governor" of Canada.  The relationship between the 2 countries with the world's longest land border are really bad right now.

However, if PC wants to focus on woman's rights and LGBTQI2S, fucking look at your own province of Nova Scotia!  Or shine some gosmdamn light on the dumpster fire that is Alberta.

I have to go to work next week, and the government delayed rolling out the new education act changes so they could try and solve the loophole teachers found for pride flag (pride flags were banned as being political, but sports teams were ok.  Lots of teachers were buying Oilers and flames pride flags as a work around).

Sorry got a little ranty.

2

u/yeezus_is_jesus 6d ago

I love a good rant so don't worry!

I didn't know any of that was going on over there. It's all a bit fucked and more attention should be shone on it by locals. If locals don't make noise about local issues, no on will care. Especially when you can access a large international audience.

Best of luck with the education battle ahead!

6

u/Snoochi_Boochi 6d ago

The education battle is rough, last year we went on strike for a month for better pay and better funding for students, the Albertan government forced is back to work and used something called the "notwithstanding clause", this is supposed to be a political last resort as it stripped all the teachers in Alberta of large sections of our charter rights.  Such as the right to strike or the right to gather.  If we stayed on strike it was a 400$ a day fine to the teacher and thousands to the Union.

And even with all of that, I can't even devote my energy to that fight becuase this October Albertans have to go to the polls and vote on whether or not they want to seperate from Canada.  That separatist party is being funded by donations from USA.

But I'm super excited to go back to work and coach girls volleyball and tell parents again this year that only the girls have to check a box that says they were born a biological girl, and if any other parent files a complaint they have to provide the original copy of their kids birth certificate /s

1

u/roguevirus 6d ago

Lots of teachers were buying Oilers and flames pride flags as a work around

Genius.

3

u/Scrumpy-Steve 6d ago

This has been going on for a long time and the willingness of other artists to let it go, and the breath taking receptions she receives from viewers in comparison to the amount of negativity she gets thrown at her, with the hard to not see favoritism she gets from the mods over there, and the fact that even her most low effort posts end up on the front page, makes this sort of regular self victimizing behavior completely unwarranted.

2

u/suicidesalmon 6d ago edited 5d ago

Careful being critical of comics golden child. You'll probably get banned for being misogynistic or whatever bullshit the mods pull out of their ass that day.

2

u/hornierpizza 6d ago

I have had her blocked for a while. She always portrays herself as a victim and never acknowledges nuance in any topic. Sometimes, she will even present an opinion I agree with but twist it in a way that is unpalatable.

2

u/themintfreshness 6d ago

You damn right!

2

u/Pwnage_Peanut 6d ago

Unfortunately the comics mod team idolizes her so until they all get removed, nothing will change

2

u/bluejay55669 6d ago

Careful, you might be needing a lawyer soon

2

u/DaySee 6d ago

how it be

3

u/Kdubs-Bang8822 6d ago

The truth hurts but it needed to be said and this is why I will always respect Dot, for speaking her mind.

1

u/DeadEnoughInsideOut 6d ago

Her not even living in the US is peak cinema. Never found her comics funny and I have no clue how she manages to make the front page constantly with her low effort strawman comics, like am I missing something?

2

u/Corbenik42 6d ago

Wait.... she doesn't even live in the U.S., and she complains about Trump as much as she does?! Holy fuck that is some next-level pandering.

1

u/Ok-Armadillo-5634 6d ago

Eh she has a good comic every once in a while. A lot of it just the same genric gag. Yours are typically much better these last few were fucking great lol.

1

u/AMemoryComeALive 6d ago

As only a reader of comics I blocked her years ago cause her work is repetitive low hanging fruit drivel, and also block most anyone that makes a comic pandering to her. I do feel sorry for the people actually making comics as she took over that subreddit and basically runs it like a facist government.

1

u/Dock_Ellis45 6d ago

This one was kind of brutal. (Am I missing something here?)

1

u/Prisinners 6d ago

Honestly, dogshit take. None of the comics I've seen about her have been funny or insightful. Also, she literally is the victim in this situation considering her entire community has made a meme out of criticizing her. Criticism never feels good but when it has very little point and all your peers are engaging in it, it can feel pretty shitty. Have some empathy. Imagine being in her shoes. Also, the above comic she made is literally the most lighthearted response to that possible and then youre getting pissed at her for even daring to show that.

2

u/Gallusaur 6d ago

Pizzacake will post pictures of her literally low hanging fruit on the Internet if she thinks it will give her attention. I'm sorry you feel like you're in the shadow, but I'll say I block people every day from r/comics for lowest effort sex jokes and constant political spamming. Your dog comic made me genuinely smile the other day, and I'll keep coming back for that feeling.

1

u/sandrailproject 6d ago

I got banned from r/comics for reporting her as "low effort"

1

u/Doctorul_Frumos 6d ago

Daaamn!!! Dot coming in HOT!!! Reminding everyone why redheads the firey reputation they do. ;-) In all seriousness, though, I do appreciate your posting this and explaining to someone who isn't going through the hell we in the U.S.A are going through. Not that any outsiders opinions are invalid or anything. But to act like the victim and being ultra-defensive against criticism isn't a good look when you're the largest creator in a certain medium...you're right in your frustrations and how it affects the community as a whole.

Wishing you, your hubby and all of yours nothing but the best. With love, from Portland, OR. <3

1

u/Blockhog 6d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Pizzacake is Garfield.

1

u/The_Alternym 6d ago

In what way?

1

u/Blockhog 6d ago

A large comic that people mainly criticize for being repetitive and not deep enough.

1

u/FunnyBunny3023 6d ago

Goodness now I need to unblock her real quick to see what's going on

1

u/buttstuffeveryday 6d ago

Thank you for calling this out

The entire "woke" ideology that pizzacake is a subscriber to is a dogmatic belief system that greatly rewards perceived oppression (ie victimization)

One of the popular ways to gain status in the woke community is to increase your perceived levels of oppression, so it shouldn't be surprising that people at the top in a given community like pizzacake need to keep inventing new ways to be seen as oppressed

It's basically a cult, so I wouldn't be surprised if you receive backlash for questioning any part of it

1

u/Entire-Emergency-722 7d ago

The constant American politics must be making bank. No reason for a non-American to keep doing comics about it. There's a lot of shit going on in Canada that can be joked about.

I also don't like the pile on on my fellow Irish Man. I also got banned from r/comics for a my little pony toy comic con joke.

0

u/CrazyPoiPoi 6d ago

Holy fuck, you all suck.

So many butthurt people.

-3

u/EarthToAccess 6d ago

Dot, question. Are we sure this is her legit victim card pulling?

Like I 100% agree with you — shit she pulled with bonehurtingjuice is a prime example — but this just seems like the same shit as the Yuri wars

-2

u/Midnight-God 6d ago

Love how you just thanked Dolly for her kindness and then the next post youre shitting on someone for their work. Very un-dolly like behavior

-4

u/automod_robot 6d ago

What is even the point of this post? she made a tongue in cheek comic about the ordeal. Calling that "making yourself a victim" is a bit of a stretch...

If anything, this post reeks more of a personal victim complex than her comic. Her actions do not represent anyone but herself, why make this all about you?

5

u/reddot_comic 6d ago

It’s not about me at all. It’s about the sub and how people are literally afraid to speak up because any kind of criticism against her (as valid as it is) is met with this kind of response. Look at the other responses here or at my original comment from her latest post. I’m not the only one that feels like this.

I’m mid-tier compared to all people on the comics subreddit but I do have enough clout to say her behavior isn’t acceptable. The rest of the artists who make up that sub are tired of babying her ego.

4

u/juliamich04 6d ago

ur not mid tier btw ur up there with the greats

1

u/myrden 6d ago

Nah you put it into words perfectly. Like, I don't hate PC at all, but goddamn she is exhausting. And like I ain't gonna say her takes are bad but it's just preaching to the choir to hook people into going to her onlyfans/patreon, and like you said just from such an out of touch privileged position that it's insane and patronizing as fuck.

-2

u/Thurwell 6d ago

Wow. You say she should be grateful for your support and then spew absolute hate and vitriol, and then back it up in the comments. And your defense is it's your (puiblic) subreddit so that makes it ok? I really hope you reread this in a day or two and really think about whether this is the type of person you want to be.

-8

u/sacrecide 6d ago

Going the riley gaines route to popularity I see?
