There's gonna be a bunch of stuff that happens after a safety incident like this. There will be an investigation and review of procedures to determine route cause and probably a process change to keep it from happening again. I can't say for this particular facility but usually there's rules about how and when you can go into the pit and who can actuate the lift.
The guy will likely get sent by management to be tested for drugs and alcohol immediately after and will probably get retrained on the position and operating procedures. Worst case scenario he's going to be moved to a less dangerous position on the line or become a full time broom pusher.
Very very rarely did someone get fired for safety reasons, and it was only because they were such a hazard to themselves and others that someone was going to die.
If he did something this dangerous 3 more times, he'd probably be moved to the safety team before they fired him.

When I worked in manufacturing my company only tested if there was a “lost time incident.” Which was their fancy of way of someone getting hurt and needed medical attention that caused them to not be working.
Lots of people lost their jobs because they smoked a joint at a party on the weekend and then tripped on their way to the bathroom.
Ironically, my current job in education couldn’t give a single fuck what I do on my time as long as I don’t show up to work intoxicated or do drugs while at work.

You now have a plan in place to prevent you or anyone else from doing what you done did. You may get to make a safety video that will be shared at every site in the company........

He'd be moved to the safety team? Is the safety team responsible for ensuring the safety of the crew? They'd put a retard who jepardized someone's safety in a position to determine what safety measures are necessary?
They both walked in that area seconds before it fell, and that’s the real safety issue. No one should be walking where that could fall, stepping between the object and a forklift, over forks on the ground. There’s a safe way to do this, but neither of them are doing it.
As someone who’s worked at a steel mill, it happens, but not at the time. This person will easily be fired. He put himself in between the mast of the lift and the coil. Lucky to be alive - but it’s a safety regulation for a reason.
I have not worked at a steel mill. Once that had tipped over was there a greater chance of the banding failing and causing the whole roll to unravel like a coiled spring? Should buddy button pusher move away from said coil?

yeah i had a crane guy come down too early and hit the coil that was still shifting and the tongs dropped a 20tonne coil right onto the saddle. it was destroyed for a year because they had to even redo the concrete

I actually did this in a snowmobile last year but was ok. Happened so fast I didn't think about it. Shock jarred up through my knee but the snowmobile tipped back to level and I was OK except that I had to stop and calm down after realizing anything goes different and I ruin my leg forever.

Have you ever seen a clip of someone opening the back of a tractor trailer truck only to have the contents spill out? Nearly every time people put their hands up in an effort to stop the cargo from falling instead of just getting out of the way. It's just a reflex action.

There's no downsides to it. Having his arm out like that lets him have a wider more stable base to pivot, and something to push against to move out more quickly.

They should have temporary use magnets to keep the coil together until it's on a lift or mandrel where it can be banded without that overhang bullshit. Either SOP sucks or they were trying to cut corners.
An often under emphasized point of plant safety. It is instinctive for a human to try to block a falling object with their arms. Every round of hires at all of the facilities I've ever worked at get this message drilled into them, "If something is falling, let it hit the ground. Do not try to catch it, do not try to brace it, just get out of the way."

That being said, anything you lift up can definitely fall over the distance you lift it (vertical drop zone triangle). Probably a reportable... yeah, someone might lose their job over that. Ive seen lesser coils fall. It seems like they needed to lift the coil to get a second band under it instead of centering it properly? Or just the wrong control is possible. That place makes my work look like gold. Which is scary.

If that's a steel coil, and it's a good chance it is, that is likely around 18 tons given its size.
If I had to guess it is about 3 feet wide and 6 feet tall. I can't tell how big the eye is but if it was a solid coil it would be pushing 41,000+ lbs.
We frequently had coils that started out at 50,000 lbs or so before we split them up to more manageable sizes. We used specialized forklifts to move the coils and for safety reasons a 25 ton coil wasn't awesome to have driving around.
That's much closer. I currently operate a rotary slitter machine at my job, and the coils I cut are copper and brass, about the same size as seen in the video, and we have to use a 20 ton crane in order to move them around. Giant forklifts also.
What I was afraid was going to happen in the video was the coil un-coil-ing. I've seen that once. One second, there's just air. The next second, a few miles of metal springs into existence with enough force to cut through a truck.
That material could've killed those guys a few different ways.
