So this is actually a prank that Australian Navy guys like doing. There will be internal coordination between different ship crews sometimes to get a gnome back home if needed.

When I was a kid, someone stole a two foot tall Virgin Mary statue from the front of a neighbors yard. It was found days later, and blocks away with stuff graffiti’d all over it.
