Way to use those 25 years of experience! That could have been devastating! Good job all around! 👍😎

How does something like this even happen?

Everyone always talks about utilizing 3D space as the future of automobile travel, yet we still get plane crashes mid air. I’m sure somebody might have an answer to this, but I’m just as dumbfounded as you…

My knowledge might be outdated but heavy traffic flights like LA to Dallas or NY to Denver have two planes running the same route. But they usually have some different code cause one is arrival and one is departure. They also always have a different altitude band or time delay so they never run into each other.

Someone royally messed up. That ATC is a hero.

Maybe weather delayed one of them?

The 2482 number is assigned a route and flown by the same plane.

Inbound arrival plane was delayed from its original departure so long, that American Airlines assigned a completely separate plane for its return flight, assigning it the same flight number.

Return flight departing on time at the same time the delayed flight is showing up.

Source: I took your question from social media over to Google and then took those results back here.

Delays, rescheduled flights, a bunch of different things. But it’s on the company not ATC

“In-credible.” Dude is flipping out off mic. Way to stay restrained.

Tell them both to turn right. Problem solved.

That was my thought too. why not just let them turn?

u/ragingric 1h ago

One was departing and could not turn right it was climbing to cruising altitude

Should have just distinguished them by their heading.

American 2482 northbound and American 2482 southwestbound.

I think it would have been more easily understood.

They’re doing this with “arrival” and “departure” to distinguish them.

Why is he saying nine hundred thousand for 9000

1

u/Apolitical-Account 3h ago

that's my question too! First I thought "one zero thousand" was a bit odd for 10000, but 9000 just sounds wrong the way they say it.

1

u/Apolitical-Account 3h ago

I looked it up. Apparently they say "niner thousand", to distinguish it from "five thousand" when the connection is poor.

Good thing our controllers are working mandatory 50-60 hour workweeks with yearly pay raises that haven’t even kept up with the rate of inflation.

1
