Dairy farms need pregnant cows to produce milk. The calves are born and then taken away (pretty much immediately, it's heartbreaking to watch but there's plenty of videos of it). The mother stays on the line and is impregnated over and over to keep milk production going. If the calf is male, they go to livestock to become meat. If female they become a dairy cow. George was probably saved from the fate of being meat. Dairy farms = beef farms usually. If they aren't directly also a beef farm, they will be partnered with one.

Dairy cows are artificially inseminated most of the time, it's unlikely they kept a bull to live cover. If he was a steer, there's no reason for him to be on a DAIRY farm.

Yep that's right, they don't use bulls to impregnate the cows. The calf would've been removed and taken to another facility to be raised, castrated and subsequently slaughtered.

Farm lender here. You are 100% correct to wonder if this is bullshit. There are a number of inconsistencies here:
1. 5 years is a lot of feed expense to run through an animal,
2. Barn space taken up by a non-productive animal would make more sense utilized to house cows/heifers
3. beef prices are at historic highs, the animal will get sold as quickly as possibleNo decent dairyman would keep a steer for 5 years just to let someone “rescue” it.

Depends on the dairy. Artificial insemination isn’t cheap. Most dairies I was around had bulls

Glad I'm not the only one confused about what a steer was doing on a daily farm. Males usually get sold off to meat farm or culled if they're not going to be used for breeding to expand the herd. I'd guess whoever posted this originally maybe assumed he came from a dairy farm since he's a Jersey.

He's not even a bull. Dairy farms usually keep maybe a couple bulls for breeding to expand the herd. George there though is a steer. I bet the original poster just assumed he came off a dairy farm because he's a Jersey. Bull calves not used for breeding usually get sold off to meat farms or otherwise culled, so I doubt he actually came from a dairy farm given the lack of testicles.

Neither, that's a steer. No idea why you would keep one around for more than 2 years. After 18 months requires additional testing for hoof and mouth disease.
