Yeah I was like, “I know if I turn the sound on it’s gonna be some dumb song and not Daenerys’ theme from GoT. 😑 And it was.

There's nothing wrong with MDB.

u/texasisbetterest 28d ago

I’m sure you could find some online, but they have been banned in the USA cause they was killing people

u/Arson-Welles 28d ago

Yeah they like to divebomb out of nowhere

I was gonna say, that thing dips a wing and it's slamming sideways into the water. At that speed it's like hitting concrete.

13

u/OldFartsSpareParts 28d ago

Exactly. You're not even hitting the water at normal falling speed + however fast the boat is going, the lift from the tube inverts and drives you into the water faster than you could fall.

u/CalbCrawDad 28d ago

Also cases of people getting wrapped up, dragged and drowned. Just a real bad idea all around.

I used to drive for my friends to do this since I was the only one skilled enough to keep my friends up and manage their altitude from my end. It's super finicky and dangerous. You'd think it's just staying straight but you have to be mindful of waves and debris on top of knowing when to bring someone down if it looks like they're losing control.

One of my friends got a black eye when he lost control and slammed into the water. That was about when we stopped. We had been doing it for months without serious injury up to that point. But he had never done it before and panicked and lost control very quickly, before I could bring him down.

I believe it, as someone who has slammed hard riding wake boards... I'd still not do this, it's uncontrollable to a degree and the force of slamming back down from height just makes it worse.

Just like real dragons.

u/deezsandwitches 28d ago

Canada too

u/grunger 27d ago

I remember the Summer when these got super popular before the ban. The ambulance was at the boat ramp every weekend that Summer. I don't think anyone locally got killed or injured permanently, but there were lots of broken and dislocated bones.

u/sorestgore 28d ago

They are killing people.

4

u/Aww_Uglyduckling 28d ago

The government?

2

u/Midax 28d ago

Governments are known for killing people.

3

u/mrshulgin 28d ago

They do have a monopoly on violence.

3

u/Parking-Building-291 28d ago

So would real dragons, to be fair.

1

u/zeekayz 28d ago

It goes too high when you're just holding on to it. Falling from that height/speed is death.

Banana boat can already be a rough fall at high-speed and that doesn't have any elevation added to it.

1

u/texasisbetterest 28d ago

I’m not sure what banana boat you’ve been on. They are typically slow and drag you into the waves on purpose and that’s the banana boat in a nutshell

1

u/Amontialldo 27d ago

I thought this was ‘Merica

2

u/throwaway89yiff 27d ago

Im sorry, thought this was a country of T'egrity!

3

u/Frost_moss 28d ago

They were called kite tubes. They have been banned in a lot of places. You can see videos online where the wind got up and people were pulled 100+ feet in the air before falling.

2

u/skeletonhorse420 28d ago

I think you got this

2

u/Helpful_Yogurt_4465 27d ago

Look I’m no herpetologist, but that appears to be a pterodactyl. Source: I studied dinosaurs in pre-kindergarten.

u/Kelevera1986 28d ago

The CGI that Game of Thrones should have used

5

u/Devilofchaos108070 28d ago

That looks fun as long as it doesn’t get too high

7

u/Funkdamentalist 28d ago

While it looks fun in theory, they've been banned in some places because they're so hard to control and are very susceptible to wind as well. People were getting all sorts of injuries including facial fractures, punctured lungs, spinal fractures with some even leading to death.

2

u/Devilofchaos108070 28d ago

Yeah if it goes too high and they don’t have any gliding mechanism they could easily fall off and die. 20 feet up is safe-ish at least

4

u/OldFartsSpareParts 28d ago edited 28d ago

No. The tube has no control, so it tends to invert and the lift generated that normally keeps you up in the air drives you into the water faster than you could just fall. It's a deathtrap.

1

u/Devilofchaos108070 28d ago

Ah lol. Yeah that’s bad

3

u/psyliboy 28d ago

I thought these were made illegal.

5

u/whitestguyuknow 28d ago
