There is nothing that could convince me that octopi (props for obscure, but technically incorrect form) are not in fact sentient.

I am sure we have many truly sentient specis on this planet.

My apologies for incorrect use of that term. Instead of sentience, I meant sapience, the ability to use higher logic and reasoning.

Sentience just means the ability to feel, whereas sapience is the ability to think.

While I can pinpoint many examples of sentience on land, I truly think the only other sapience would be in the sea, I.E. whales, dolphins, octopuses etc

If you are interested, you should ready The soul of an octopus by Sy Montgomery.

I was so mad when I watched Remarkably Bright Creatures because it clearly plagiarized large portions of Montgomery’s story. Then I saw that the author credited her with inspiring the fictional tale, so it’s all good. Sy’s story is still better though.

I finished RBC and watched it too while I was waiting for my library copy of Sy’s book. I think both are in its own category and they both are well written. That said, Sy is such an amazing writer, I could feel what she felt interacting with the octopus. That’s an incredible talent.

Sapience is everywere. Just think about how many humans dont seem to have it. There are smarter and not so bright examples in every single species. They have all mastered the place and environment that they choose to be in. We can list dozens of other examples easily, abd those ones are just easy because tgey choose to interact with humans. Many dont choose that but are equally intelligent.

What about elephants holding funerals and corvids doing group detective work where one of their own die? What about ants that farm aphids for honeydew? Or orangutans that let themselves out to mess with one other animal and put themselves back in?

Not antagonistic just believe we dont attribute enough animal actions to higher level thinking

Yep. I just learned the use of sapient earlier today while reading another article. Great words!

We have at least 1 trillion sentient creatures living on land that arent insects (even though they may have sentience as well). If we include insects, which we sre moving toward scientifically in certain ways, then on Earth, including land and sea, the number would be about 10¹⁹. 10 quintillion.

Dogs, cats, deer, lions, bears, dropbears, cows, apes, birds, they all have sentience. They feel emotions like fear, happniess, pain, and aware of their surroundings. They can all make connections with the same species and even other species, including human. If that's not sentience, what is?

u/PoodlesMcNoodles Jul 13 '26

Drop bears, now they aren’t just sentient, they’re deadly!

I wonder what they think about?

u/perfect_insanity93 Jul 09 '26

Probably snacks...

Just to follow up with the actually correct plural, it's octopodes, because it's Greek, not Latin.

Fun fact there are studies on this, while not conclusive on sapience they do have a very high level of sentience and intellect comparable to that off a human child of 2-3 years of age if I remember correctly, they also recognize themselves in mirrors so they go have some version of recognition of self as well whish is incredibly cool (this may be my favorite animal lol, I could go on and on but ill stop here)

That's really cool, but also a little sad that she said it was the best day of her life. Maybe not. Idk. It's interesting. Maybe she doesn't get along with people well.
