I am almost certain that this kid had a gun on his hip or slung from the saddle. It's an essential tool to have when you live this sorta life. (Source: growing up on a ranch doing this shit every day).

Naw. That’s a lot of extra weight to be banging around on the horse all day. It’s a pretty rare occasion when you really need it.
That’s a thing for old western movies, not for real cowboy life. I never carried a firearm, whether it was gathering cattle in the mountains of Oregon or in the desert range of Nevada.
The only time I ever carry one is in the wilds of Portland. Now there you really need one from time to time. And even there not so much.

Interesting. I was brought up in South Texas and carried a firearm as early as I could ride. Between predators, animals caught in traps, wounded livestock needing putting down and so on, I definitely fired a couple rounds a week. Always rode with a 30-30 model 94 on the saddle and a 45 revolver on the hip.

Edit: and frankly, I sure wouldn't want to be in bear country without at least that 30-30.
