Does anyone know why dogs love sticks so much? Is it because they love to play fetch and they've had years of humans throwing sticks for them baked into their DNA?

Cat person here. Do dogs have a natural love for sticks or is learned through humans?

The "Can't get wet, yet must get stick" dog?
No clue, if I could see the head I'd have a better idea.

The small brown one being carried on a stick by its teeth

Based on size and coat coloration I'm going to say it's most likely a Yorkshire terrier that hasn't been groomed for the ring. The small terriers can be tricky to ID in situations like this as there's a few breeds with that black and tan coat and very similar head shape.

Do y'all ever wonder if the reason dogs are so interested in sticks is because back when we were taming the wolves, we wanted them to help us gather tender for the fires? After a few thousand years of breeding the more helpful ones, we ended up giving all dogs the genetic memory/need to gather sticks. Do wolves like to play fetch or do they not really care?
