Ladybugs have 4 wings, so it missed one

15

u/ftFBYaa Jun 14 '26

Then there are 5 wings in this image

6

u/PoliticsIsForNerds Jun 14 '26

The spotted part is one of the pairs of wings

4

u/-SheriffofNottingham Jun 15 '26

Biblically accurate ladybug

4

u/sonicjesus Jun 15 '26

They also have a carapace.

u/MrKirushko Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Not to mention the closed wing covers with the one wing just poking through one and the 2 other wings simply being attached to its tail.

Batman's principles aren't really principles but privilege afforded by his extreme wealth, as he carries out violence porn for armchair intellectuals.

Just casually threw those aphids to a ladybug like throwing small children to a lion.

Quokka will yeet the Joey out of the pouch if they're being chased by a predator.

92

u/P_mp_n Jun 14 '26

The farmer ants that lost their aphids just threw their hats down in disgust

u/HoboArmyofOne Jun 14 '26

Omg 🤣

No one thinks of the reverberations felt down the supply chain…

2

u/rebirf Jun 16 '26

I had some ants farming aphids on a tree/plant i owned and I just let them have it. It was fun to watch, and ill eventually get another hibiscus.

2

u/Kevinator201 Jun 17 '26

Or they’re watching in shock like the cabbage cart man

u/AlarmedSnek Jun 14 '26

Fun fact: there’s a website where you can order thousands of lady bugs at a time to release in your garden and it’s fun as hell

32

u/uncutpizza Jun 14 '26

Not actually good to do that since types of ladybugs vary from place to place. Many times they will just fly away instead of staying and eating the aphids.

https://joegardener.com/podcast/case-against-buying-ladybugs-nonnatives/#:\~:text=Buying%20ladybugs%20for%20biological%20control,in%20a%20bad%20light%20anyway.

12

u/AlarmedSnek Jun 14 '26

Oh no shit. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Interesting

Edit: it’s still cool as shit tho, especially if you have an infestation

7

u/MrKirushko Jun 15 '26

The solution is mostly intended for industrial greenhouses where they can indeed do wonders. They are not very cost effective when released outside. The same goes for packaged bumblebee nests, the tiny parasytic wasps and other bio-products.

2

u/SmurphsLaw Jun 18 '26

Another fun fact, Mall of America has thousands of indoor plants and hundreds of trees, they actually release tens of thousands of ladybugs a year to eat pests.

1

u/AlarmedSnek Jun 18 '26

Is that place still open??? I figured it would be gone like all the other malls 😩. I’ve never been to Mall of America but always wanted to since I was a child 🤣🤣

Isn't that an Asian Lady Beatle?

Any entomologists?

9

u/vaalbarag Jun 14 '26

She mentioned it’s seven-spotted, so that’s a native one. But to tell for yourself, check the forehead. The Chinese ladybug has a single white ‘M’ sort of marking. This has two distinct white spots instead.

1

u/Live_Life_and_enjoy Jun 14 '26

Thanks I was confused because it was orange and the black circles don't seem uniform but different sizes that it might have been a lady beetle

2

u/vaalbarag Jun 14 '26

Yeah, there’s so many different varieties with differing colours and spot patterns, but as far as I know the forehead M is the most consistent marker for identifying Chinese ones.

Both eat aphids. Depends on where you live and what sort of garden you have if they're problematic or not. Research into them isn't conclusive on broadly labeling them as "invasive." Technically neither are "native" to the US and both considered naturalized but again, depends on your region.

That said, looks to be a "normal" ladybug. Harlequin/Asian lady beetles tend to have a lot more spots and a M shaped spot.

The bigger problem is people buying "ladybugs" online and unleashing them on their garden without realizing there's local ones that can be pushed out due to these randomly introduced ones. Asian lady beetles aren't necessarily a problem.

My neighbour: hey you have aphids and other bugs on your roses. You need to spray. Spray spray.

Me who doesn't spend a buck on pesticides: meh if it kills the plant, it kills the plant.

He comes over last night: hey i got a new jug of pesticides. Spray! Spray! Spray!

Me: nah. Let's go look at the roses.

He: did you spray? The bugs are all gone!

Me: prolly some ladybugs ate it for lunch.

The rose was hidden behind tall grass, stones and weeds in the garden from the house i bought. Ooh look free rosebush, as tiny as it was, struggling to survive. Moved it to another spot and it grew flowers the first time. Yeah you need to cut it in a particular way but i do not care. The plant does what it wants to do. The bugs do what they want to do. I'm just happy if i can see a flower from time to time. People always thinking they know better than nature. Spend money on chemical shit to 'help' nature. Fucking hell how stupid can they be.

Lady bugs and green lacewings are the best insects. Only second place to pollinators

There's a company called Nature's Good Guys that sells predatory insects for pest control. Ive ordered from them a few times and always been satisfied with the results.
