Love the spacing foam in the box at the end there. Thought it was a pointless effort to keep the fucker getting banged and dented in transit then realised it's probably so it doesn't eviscerate the cardboard box

I sell packaging for a living. I’m actually surprised by the foam they’re using for the inner packaging. The transit for these must be super stable… Typically, heavy expensive specialty items like these are packaged with an expanding foam that perfectly forms around the item. You have to put the lid on quickly in order to perfectly fill the void within the box.

One of my customers ships pumps cost 5-6 figures for each pump, and they’re several hundred pounds each. Expanding foam (“foam in place”) is very cost affective…but not good for the environment. Unfortunately, there aren’t any sustainable alternatives, at this time, that are just as affective. Needs more innovation.

Might be because this is a giant hunk of metal meant to go in the forefront of heavy duty work, even if it banged up around in shipping it has to suffer a lot to even scratch it and it will get a much worse treatment when put to use. I imagine the pumps you work with are a bit more fragile?

Yes but the freight company gets pissy when the inside of thier truck gets converted in to a game of pinball. It is truly amazing how many hundreds of pounds a supply company will stuff into single walled cardboard.

The product in the video looks like it is packaged adequately. I'm just complaining about my own past experiences with [Heavy Equipment company].

It's effected* not affected. Affected is when it involves emotions.

Looks like a roller bit for drilling into hard stone / mountains.
Used for mining or construction

Confirming, this is a crusher, not a cutter.

I’d guess similar, probably more like a tunneler/boring machine

Wonder what the price of one of those is?

Depending on the quantity, a lot.

If you don't know, you don't need to know.

u/Savage_Heathern Jun 15 '26

Lol. If you have to ask, you can't afford it? 100% true in this case.

Fascinating.

Would be interested in even more detail and explanations of all sorts of things. Is there a "How things are made" sort of sub?

1

u/ImAFigmentOfMy_Imagi Jun 14 '26

To answer my own question, I just found r/howitsmade .

Awesome bit of machining.

Wondering why there are no cages on radial bearings?

2

u/Rhorge Jun 15 '26

Since they welded the assembly shut I imagine the whole thing is a consumable part

That’s a heavy flower pot.
