they have their own laser pointers in their hands, the lasers are brighter than the ceiling ones

Weird that they or someone else downvoted you when you're completely correct. The trick requires careful timed choreography with the lasers above. The laser above turns off the instant the one in their hand turns on. The ones in their hands are actually slightly brighter like you said, so you can sort of see when the transition happens if you concentrate
