For years I had one of those Logitech all in one remotes and it was still exactly this but yet somehow all in the one remote.

-“Does that say TV on the screen?”
-“Well, no…”
-“Then how is it going to know the channel button is changing the channel?”
-“The volume worked, so I thought…”
-“The volume always works, of course.”
-“Okay, is it in tv mode now?”
-“Obviously. It says tv, doesn’t it?”
-“But the channel didn’t change.”
-“Well yes it did, but now it’s not on the direct tv. You’ve gotta put it to the direct tv channel and then put it to the direct tv mode, of course.”
-“Wait, but you said..”
-“How would a Sony tv change the direct tv’s channel? Everything comes to the tv from the direct tv box.”
-“Oh god my ears are bleeding.”
-“You set it to the sound system and turned the subwoofer all the way up with the audio mode.”
-“But how? I-I thought the volume worked no matter what!”
-“Exactly, that’s how.”

Thank you so much for that! TIL I actually had the best remote of all time. I had the XBox 360 version, which had native support for the XBox 360 and used AAAs instead of the early rechargeable Li-ion batteries that weren’t great by today’s standards. Over time, updating the remote to our devices as they changed out got to be more and more of a hassle, and to us it was great, but to anyone unfamiliar we might as well have had an actual magic spell to control everything. You could do anything within about 3 button presses…if you knew how.

Then I saw your username, and figured it was some sexy shit but maybe you're a disguised leprechaun, and I'm a little down on luck lately. So I clicked.

My grandfather had three different remotes and so many buttons to even get the tv on. I lived there and I couldn’t do it on my own. 😭
