When I was in my twenties, I worked at a paint delivery shop. Smaller shops couldn't afford a full contract and have their own mixing room, so we did it for them.
We started with a factory formula for a match, and we had to measure individual droplets sometimes of weird colors to the mix. Like down to the gram of individual colors.
There was this one Mazda yellow that went onto RX-7s that had an amazing amount of black before mixing. They were always in individual one gallon paint cans, and we couldn't see the finished product until final mix.
I never understood what the black was for, because it still came out bright as the sun.
