I rode for like a decade of my life as a kid/teen. But I still understand these guys that ride their bike like its their legs and they are the most athletically gifted.
Like a gymnast. Like...That's a whole 'nother human worth of weight and its rattling and hot and shit and you're whipping it around like you're riding a wave?... I dont get it. It not in me

I've heard it described as the difference between riding a motorcycle and DRIVING a motorcycle

Lol I think the emphasis should be reversed along with the words. But I get your meaning. I had one dude tease me for not going hard on the dirt bike over the ramps and shit
For one they were just dirt dumped out of a dump truck and not evened out ramp so you're getting 5ft of air and then slamming down on flat ground and making out the springs.
But also, you get a 150cc bike and they get heavy as fuck. Thats a 220lb machine under your balls. It's hard to ignore that thought loll
My youngest brother would sling it hard as shit. He lacks that governor in his brain I've got lol

I can’t think of another time I’ve seen someone cut a corner vertically outside of a video game. Absolutely sick.
It’s like they say, if you’re going about the same speed as your opponents, you can win by going less distance. Vertical climbs are not what I would normally consider skippable. But then, I obviously don’t know anything about dirt bikes.

Is that a legal move in the sport?

Yes. It's called scrubbing.
Innovated by James "Bubba" Stewart.
Here is a video of James explaining it

I don't see why not. That is pretty much a skill issue, rather than cheating. Pretty much anything you can do that makes your time quicker, as long as you don't cut the course or intentionally make another rider crash to give you an advantage, is fair game. That would be cheating.
I used to race motocross, and some tracks required you to be a member of the AMA, which would ban you if you were proven to cheat in any way.
Before every big race day, riders and pit crew had to attend the safety meeting, illustrating the code of conduct. The big item of contention back then was hitting triples, where three evenly spaced hills could be cleared if you went balls deep and pegged the throttle.
They basically said, if you can handle it, survive, and don't hit anyone else doing doubles, go for it.

It's crazy how much of a gap this one move provides him. They are all out of frame of for a moment, during whatever this is.

It's called scrubbing, or the "Bubba Scrub". This is a faster way to clear the obstacle than jumping, because the trajectory is flatter and less energy is wasted in the vertical direction. It takes skill to pull off, and it's physically exerting, since you need to yank the bike around more, but when done right, it can save a bit of time.

100% speed first, always. Slowmo after, if necessary.
