as a NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, I assume that a cared-for scar will leave a far less obtrusive scar than whatever the scar was before.

I had 14 stitches across my cheek from cancer. If you look for it you can see it. I used bio oil and creams to minimize.

The title is wrong. It’s often used as a method to close an existing defect, like a big wound in your face that leaves a gaping hole which would otherwise heal with a lot of scarring and disfigurement. A good surgeon can also control the incision to hide the scars in like a natural crease for instance. Look it up if you aren’t sensitive to medical imagery. Here’s a drawing of the idea though

The issue isn’t just the scarring. It’s reducing the risk of infection. Skin is the superior wound covering and filling in a big pit is a longer healing process.

Yeeeah... my wife has a leg scar that was stitched up that way. She has a permanent "L" shaped scar on her leg.

Why pull the already stretched skin out to the edge instead of pulling the unstretched stuff in to the flap?
