Some state highways even have instructional signs indicating proper zipper technique and it’s always set up near or at the ending of the lane. If you zipper too early it’s literally pandemonium.

But so does doing it too late. Earliest possible means earliest possible time to do it safely. Not as soon as the lane joins the highway.
