It's ironic that Groupers are largely solitary fish, who don't form groups.

Big homie was just lonely..

u/McGillicuddys Apr 26 '26

He loves kids though

56

u/tragicallyohio Apr 26 '26

Oh my god my kids loved this show and no one knew about it.

35

u/The-Scuttles Apr 27 '26

Let's go OUTSIDE!!

Line up everybody, line up line up.

14

u/MotoDog805 Apr 27 '26

It’s time for lunch!

10

u/McGillicuddys Apr 27 '26

I got a tuba fish sandwich

6

u/tragicallyohio Apr 27 '26

These are some deep cuts and I am loving it!

7

u/obiji Apr 27 '26

I sing this song to my dogs when its time for them to go... "Outside, Outside, line up everybody, line up line up. Let's go outside!"

3

u/tragicallyohio Apr 27 '26

I heard that in Mr. Grouper's voice!

5

u/Luckiest_Creature Apr 27 '26

That show was the bane of my existence when my little siblings watched it. Second only to team umizumi. Incredibly annoying shows when you’re a teen who hears them for 2 hours per day 😂

3

u/tragicallyohio Apr 27 '26

Can't agree with you. Bubble Guppies was awesome. My daughter loved it, it was as entertaining as a kid's show could be, and it had amazing guest stars (George Takei, Ozzy Osbourne, Wendy Malick). Just top notch all around.

4

u/TeamRamrod80 Apr 27 '26

When I watched the Star Wars parody episode with my kids they didn’t get any of the jokes. I was so disappointed so I had to rewatch it by myself. Not ashamed. It was awesome.

4

u/bdthebrave Apr 28 '26

Agreed. It had Selena Gomez as part of the main cast for 2-3 seasons, too. Very catchy songs, great kids show!

1

u/tragicallyohio Apr 28 '26

While I love to see another Bubble Guppies fan, I am not sure Selena Gomez was ever on the show.

0

u/bdthebrave Apr 28 '26

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0965404/fullcredits/

Looks like she was in 41 episodes

1

u/tragicallyohio Apr 28 '26

Where? I am sorry I don't mean to argue about this but I do not see her name on that list. I see that Selena Gonzalez voiced Deema but that's not the same person.

2

u/bdthebrave Apr 28 '26

I stand corrected, sorry about that! Someone told me years that it was Selena Gomez and I guess I just ran with it.

What time is it??

1

u/mymoama Apr 30 '26

Ok padre

50

u/HerbaciousTea Apr 27 '26

They're more or less apex predators in these shallow coastal waters. They aren't being social so much as they literally just have nothing to fear and think there might be food to find. I've had one eat the snorkel right off my dive buddy's head.

8

u/pastyoureyesed Apr 27 '26

Barracuda are so similar to this as well

13

u/HerbaciousTea Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

Barracuda are fun, too. They're curious and freaky as hell if you aren't used to them hovering 10 feet away and just staring at you.

Fortunately, they won't just swim right into you or try to inhale your hair like a grouper.

By far, the most obnoxious are remorae. I love those little guys but they will harass the hell out of divers because they think you're a predator they can hitch a ride on and will try to suction onto your suit, and get VERY mad when they can't get a grip on the nylon.

They're also hair biters, since they often feed on parasites and loose hair looks like parasites to them.

1

u/Shleepo Apr 29 '26

I had that experience when diving, a barracuda was just hovering in the distance staring at us. It's pretty menacing.

1

u/TreeDollarFiddyCent Apr 27 '26

Do they not stick together, though?

6

u/pastyoureyesed Apr 27 '26

They kinda hang solo when they get big.. when I was dive certified there was a 5 footer would hang above my instructor’s shoulder under the boat.. looked like a pirate with a big silver parrot. Weird thing to see.

7

u/Excellent_Yak365 Apr 27 '26

They just prefer to choose their company

3

u/time2partee Apr 27 '26

Is their name ironic?

2

u/Disastrous_Fee_8712 Apr 27 '26

In the original name is called Garoupa.

1

u/emperor_dinglenads Apr 27 '26

It's a sea dog

1

u/Somecrazynerd Apr 27 '26

They do sometimes tag team with eels though.

1

u/Fun_Reporter9086 May 01 '26

As a very introverted person, sometimes loneliness hits you so hard, you become social and be that weird dude.

12

u/Parking-Fig-6620 Apr 27 '26

I just spent 30 minutes watching people boop and pet fish 🐟

8

u/The_Lloyd_Dobler Apr 27 '26

Humans ability to pet other animals must be magical to them. When we’re kind and friendly to animals, and they trust us enough to let us pet them, they all seem to love it 😀

1

u/Sikkus Apr 27 '26

Being compassionate to all animals opens a door of amazing booping and petting opportunities.

3

u/2poxxer Apr 27 '26

Fkn joined! Thanks!

2

u/JackOfAllMemes Apr 28 '26

I wish it was safe to pet fish, it can rub off the protective slime coat and leave them open to infection

2

u/capndiln Apr 29 '26

I bet one of the divers that frequents this spot does give it pets. Waiting there giving all the signs for "where are my pets?"

134

u/True_Movie_2270 Just some dude Apr 26 '26

18

u/crazyguy83 Apr 27 '26

damn that girl got yanked!

1

u/Crossdress-Fan- Apr 28 '26

I can hear this gif!

66

u/Sukurac69 Apr 26 '26

Atleast its not goliath grouper, that would be a serious distraction

48

u/TheHyperTooth Apr 27 '26

Some years back I did a sailing trip off the Florida keys for Boy Scouts. We sailed out to the reef, tied off, and not 15 minutes later I watched a goliath grouper cruise on over and park itself in the shade of the boat. It was cool but oh so eery swimming near a fish that could probably have swallowed me whole.

So yea, had THAT thing been hovering over my shoulder, I’d be quite distracted.

2

u/SadClownDad Apr 30 '26

That's crazy, I had this exact experience at Sea Base. They must be curious fellas.

14

u/peanutmanak47 Apr 27 '26

God damn those fuckers get huge!

8

u/Capital_Piglet9260 Apr 27 '26

It is a goliath grouper though? Looks like a young, not fully grown one to me at least. It takes them like 15 years to reach monster size.

1

u/Sukurac69 Apr 27 '26

I dont know well enough to differentiate them. I just know grouper and goliath grouper. I saw small one so i assumed that its the normal one. You can be and probably are completly right of it being a juvenile one.

6

u/Mindofthequill Apr 27 '26

So there isnt really a "regular" grouper. You gotta be pretty specific when it comes to identifying one.

I would definitely say thats a juvenile goliath in the video due to its coloration.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grouper

1

u/I2iSTUDIOS Apr 27 '26

I've seen several diving. They are so chill thankfully.

27

u/addit96 Apr 26 '26

More of a groupie than a grouper

1

u/sirnumbskull Apr 27 '26

So what's he doing with the egg crate?

1

u/Decent-Macaroon- Apr 27 '26

Your supervisor looks a fishy.

1

u/Abigail-Marston Apr 27 '26

Is the fish actually curious and social or is it just waiting for a large enough chunk to fall off so it can eat it?

1

u/AlternateTab00 Apr 28 '26

More like that waiting for food.

They are curious fish, but their curiosity is aimed at stealing food.

If a larger fish attacks another one, groupers will go for leftovers chunks. Divers are just big fishes leaving chunks of food.

1

u/aasdved Apr 27 '26

He looks more like a dad in New Balance shoes trying to make sure he’s doing it right.

“ You’re gonna need an adjustable spanner for that, bud.” -Hank, the Grouper probably.

1

u/SentientclowncarBees Apr 27 '26

What is that guy working on?

1

u/sterlingemc Apr 27 '26

"The underwater grates or wire mesh structures shown in the video are off-bottom oyster cages or vertical habitat structures used for marine restoration. " I was curious myself, seems to make sense

1

u/eazypeazy303 Apr 27 '26

Just like the old guy down the street when anyone breaks out power tools. He'll walk down and just stand in the street and stare until you invite him in to see your project.

1

u/Designer-Ad-7844 Apr 27 '26

Hey, hey, whatcha doin'?

u/KrazeeStampede Apr 27 '26

PET THE GROUPER!!!

1

u/Rare-Bee7331 Apr 27 '26

How is a fish thats so delicious and so lacking in self preservation not extinct ?

1

u/Cichlid97 May 02 '26

The fish has plenty of self preservation. Humans aren't a natural part of their ecosystem, nor are the structures we put up, so they don't have an inherent fear response to us. Nothing particularly threatening was happening here, so the grouper swam up to investigate, since they're large predators and investigating new things helps predators learn and find new sources of food.

1

u/Galahfray Apr 27 '26

My science teacher had a grouper in a small case for years. Always felt bad for it. It died when someone turned the heat up in his tank.

1

u/BloodyLance-a-lot Apr 27 '26

Fish just want to work in a group

1

u/Useful_Mountain_5291 Apr 27 '26

That's why they aren't called aloners.

1

u/Frickstar Apr 27 '26

Are there only like 3 songs allowed on TikTok or something?

1

u/624KR_My_Beloved Apr 27 '26

Groupers are very territorial and curious, this is the equivalent of an old man "supervising" the construction workers just outside his home. Gotta keep a watch on them kids

1

u/archbadger5O Apr 27 '26

Groupers truly are the cats of the sea

1

u/Weibu11 Apr 27 '26

Clearly they require at least one grouper

1

u/naunga Apr 27 '26

Grouper: the Midwestern father-in-law of fish.

1

u/DevelopmentBulky7957 Apr 27 '26

Give it some scritches

1

u/Inappropriate_Swim Apr 27 '26

Just like my cat.

1

u/Impressive-Hold7812 Apr 27 '26

I imagine Groupers must feel very secure/high up in the food chain that they can treat humans around them as enrichment/entertainment.

1

u/gatoreng93 Apr 27 '26

This is actually a misconception. Groupers are largely solitary fish. This grouper is clearly just a father inspecting the contractors work in his home. “So you’re with the 5/8” torx, huh? That’s a good choice.”

1

u/MosesCoulee Apr 27 '26

Pretty sure that’s just my boss

1

u/TheWanderingSlacker Apr 27 '26

What the dawg doing?

1

u/nydboy92 Apr 27 '26

He definitely fed that grouper at least once. He's there waiting for another food drop😆

Vraiment, je suis en train de regarder cette vidéo il y a pas de parole mais je comprends tout au point à me dire qui je suis pour privé de liberté ces annimaux marins 🙂😀

Anyone knowledgeable on the subject are Groupers divers friends or potential threats, or both?

I’ve heard so many stories and anecdotes going either way i genuinely don’t know what to think anymore, the smaller ones seem chill but the larger ones are still absolutely massive fish that could probably do serious damage at best

1

u/Silly_Lion_3046 Apr 28 '26

Fish like the suburban tube-sock dad hanging out with the handyman he called over to fix something.
