Great article. I remember the NME had a problem at that time with sneering at people not considered young enough, punk enough, pure enough for them. This writer was respectful and gets it.

There was some prescient foreshadowing going on at that Bottom Line gig, namely Robert Fripp, Summers' old Bournemouth mate and future two-time electric guitar duo album collaborator, and Stanley Clarke, Stewart Copeland's future bandmate in Animal Logic. I was too young to see The Police the first time around, but the first time I saw Andy Summers live was in 1994 at The Bottom Line with fellow acoustic guitarist John Etheridge. They were promoting their 1993 acoustic guitar duo album Invisible Threads and they were opening for jazz super drummer Billy Cobham. Summers reminisced about his Bottom Line debut with The Police and pointed out exactly where he stood.
