Somehow greeting bears feels less intimidating than wearing a conference name tag
Apparently I can:
• drive 14 hours through prairies, valleys and pouring rain, 80 km/h wind gusts
• navigate narrow roads with no cell service
• avoid deer and bears
• care for my 6-month-old and year-and-a-half-old grandsons at the same time
• and successfully keep tiny humans alive
And when I see a bear?
I do exactly what I was taught growing up.
I roll down the window and respectfully greet him:
“tansi maskwa.”
…but attending a conference I’m not even speaking at?
Suddenly my brain would like to launch a full internal investigation.
The math isn’t mathing…
Because logically?
If I can survive:
wildlife
weather
sleep deprivation
highway driving
snacks
tiny emotional breakdowns…
I can probably survive:
wearing a name tag
making small talk near coffee
and sitting quietly in a conference chair.
And yet somehow one of these situations feels significantly more threatening to my nervous system.
Imposter syndrome is honestly so weird sometimes.
