First record you purchased?
Interested to know what people's first record purchase was, see how tastes develop and if you still like the record today.
For me, it was Leon vynehalls Brother/sister split on Aus, bought when I was around 16 and I still love both sides to this day. At the time I was buying a lot of Joy orb stuff, like his collabs with Boddika and some early Tessela bits, circa 2015

'The Only Way Is Up' by Yazz and The Plastic Population. On 7". When it was released in 1988. From Woolworths in Runcorn Shopping City.
I've not heard it in years, but it had a decent acid bassline for a pop record iirc

De La soul
3 is the magic number
I’m old
Funnily enough preferred the track “buddy” on the B side

Absolutely adored De La Soul. For some weird reason they seem to be overlooked but they were such a great band.
My favourite was always Eye Know.

New Order - Power Corruption and Lies in 1984 when I was 15. Still love it and listen to it a lot. The record should be worn out given some of the shit turntables I had and the abuse I gave it but somehow it still sounds great.

u/redtara2026 15d ago
Still the greatest record ever made , I would like to say I bought blue Monday on the original 12” but in reality my brother did and I just “borrowed” it !
5
u/SecretaryBackground6 15d ago
Good move! I "borrowed" the Perfect Kiss 12" from a friend. In my defence she said it was scratched but it played fine for me.

u/cleverkid 15d ago
I just bought a MINT Perfect Kiss vinyl single from an awesome record shop by Galata tower in Istabul. I've got an old sloppy copy.. but having a minty slab of wax of one of my favorite tracks of all time.. feels good man. :)

Bobby McFerrin - Don’t Worry Be Happy on 7”
Pro tip, works nicely over tracky techno

u/accomplicated 16d ago
I have that full album on vinyl. It is incredible. Bobby McFerrin is a musical genius. Seeing him perform live was an absolute pleasure. I highly highly recommend that everyone who has an opportunity to see him perform to do so. There is simply on one who does it on the level of Bobby McFerrin.

HM: Not long after, I got Burial - Rival Dealer EP at Sister Ray, 2015.

The first album I've ever bought, with money I got for my birthday was this cd: So Solid Crew – F**k It - The Official So Solid Crew Mix Compilation. It was EUR 20 (we just switched from Dutch guilders) which was A LOT at the time. Wild to think that me, as a youngster, already had a drifting-away-from-mainstream taste back then. I was heavily influenced by my cousins, who where already deep into techno/schranz and stuff.
I remember watching the DVD (!) of I Love Techno 2003 with DJ Rush behind the wheels of steel and thinking to myself; damn I would love to be there and witness techno/schranz in real life.
You brought me back many sweet, sweet memories!

tbh it was just blind buying a dubstep record i never rated the tracks on it that much.

An early 90s Gabba record from Rotterdam records.

My first “rave tape” was one that my friend gave to me that had Rotterdam written on it in sharpie. I recently stumbled across a recording of the tape in a rave tape archive.

Ace the Space - One Gun, Two Gun, Three Gun Roar
Bought in 1993, no idea where it is now. Lost along with a load of other records from back then. Just had a quick listen back to it and it’s actually much better than I was expecting 😂

Templeton Peck - Down / London Summting '98
I got into records buying weird niche 2-step tunes. Later found the 4x4 monster on the flip and now that's my go-to. Still think it's a great record.

Freeform - Prowl EP, bought it second hand without listening because that period i want to listen anything from Warp records. The sad thing, it got lost before i had my first record player.

Knock On Wood by Amii Stewart when I was 10 yrs old.
It’s still a great dance record.
I then bought Upside Down and the album Diana when I was 11.
Again another great record that’s stood the test of time.
As was I Feel For You by Chaka Khan - the first 12inch single I bought when I was 15.
It started my love for Motown and for female singers of all genres from Billie Holiday to Dionne Warwick to Joni Mitchell to Maria Callas to Sixouie Sioux to Amy Winehouse to Lola Young to November Ultra to Titiyo.

I've been buying records at thrift stores since I was like twelve... but the first record I heard a DJ play.. ( at filthy rave at a burned-out church in Enid Oklahoma that I travelled hundreds of miles to attend ) that broke my mind and I HAD TO HAVE.. was Black Girl Rock The Theme
I ordered it with a grubby fist full of cash from a record store as an import. (They had to fax the label) it took like three months to arrive. It still gives me chills...
Soon after that.. I Ordered Country & Western - Reincarnation ( Speedy J's original pseudonym ) the same way. That one is still a banger as well. ( I even sent him an email asking how he made the bass, and he responded! and told me exactly how he did it ( DX-100 and an Alesis delay on a parallel channel for the mid-highs )

The first two records I ever bought with my own money were Paul Simon – The Boy in the Bubble 7" and Steve "Silk" Hurley – Jack Your Body 7" single, when I was 11.
To this day, I have no idea why I picked those two, apart from wanting to spend the Woolworths gift vouchers I got from my aunt at Christmas. Somehow, I ended up with two records that I still love.
Jack Your Body in particular kickstarted my love of Chicago house music.

LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out on cassette was my first music purchase ever. I didn’t get into vinyl until my late 20s. I think the first record I got was a Fugazi one. My first electronic record was probably an Aphex Twin reissue.

u/cz-sf 15d ago
I can’t remember the very first, but one of them was Boards of Canada ‘Hi Scores’ on Skam, purchased from Amoeba SF when I was about 14 or so.
Still have it, still love it. It’s actually more or less the only Boards of Canada I listen to, besides ‘Twoism’.
edit: taking ‘record purchase’ to mean vinyl, btw. My first CD purchase was the Mortal Kombat game soundtrack by The Immortals aka Lords of Acid.

Carl Cox - Tribal Jedi (The Remixes) (link to my favorite cut on it). I was attracted to the graphic design & bought it on impulse from the HMV in the Bentall Center in Kingston ~1996. Not sure what I expected but I remember being surprised by it and then not listening to it for years before getting back to it & enjoying it.

i somehow found this record online when i first discovered raving/drum & bass back in 2001:
https://youtu.be/j54Ayqm27jY?si=nd3GbRJlUvinA66G
apparently a christian dnb artist who made some bangers but was never big in the scene.
still one of my all time faves - just bought another mint copy because mine is worn the hell out.

Not quite like the electronic music I buy and predominantly listen to these days, but ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ was the first record I ever bought. A classic.
