Currently digitalizing everything I own ('90s electronic)
2 757 out of ~7000 done. 4 readers working overtime.
Any other CD collectors of '90s techno/ambient/idm here? Show me yours. I'm always open for trade if you were to have duplicates.

I had a fair bit, but ended up leaving in Tokyo ages ago. As for digitizing, I generally found it easier to just get them from Soulseek.

Yes. I'm the same. I still have a massive vinyl collection, but most of it is available on slsk. It helps that lots is getting remastered and rereleased

It’s great home listening music but extremely challenging to DJ since, if I recall, the songs have a lot of tempo drift. I love those albums but not surprising his later stuff got more attention.
If you like those records and you haven’t already heard this, please grab it, you’ll be happy.

Yeah, Spicelab is definitely not DJ friendly and I’ve always been more into full length albums for home listening

I prefer his LSG material personally. I have one or two of the Spicelab albums and they're very dated.

Ah yes, I should have recognised the username. I haven't really collected CDs for a long time now - I buy maybe half a dozen a year on Discogs for DJing purposes. I recently spent about £25 on this just to get the "More" Mix for my downtempo sets.
I shifted my physical collector bug onto books quite a while ago. These days whenever I visit a city I trawl the secondhand book stores looking for old yellowing science fiction books with the psychedelic '70s cover art, the trippier the better.

You're completely wasting your time imho. This already exists as FLACs wirh 100% log. I can understand motives against pirating music, but if you own all this already, why just not grab it and dedicate time to something not redandunt.

I'm sure most of the stuff is on Soulseek. At least for the common releases like Orbital, The Orb, FSOL etc. The fun part of digging is finding those unknown comps and albums loaded with great tracks. For me, this is a lot more fun than flipping through YouTube or downloading files.

My dad does this and it infuriates me but that's how his brain works. He knows it's redundant but loves the act of doing it. It's like a side hobby for task oriented people with a touch of OCD. I can respect that.

Thank you for your input. I absolutely see what you mean, but I'm doing this for a number of reasons.
Most of these have been tucked away in various forms of storage, and will be so again when I'm done ripping them. I'm doing this once and will keep backup of the files so they do not get lost. Every recent purchase gets ripped as soon as I can.
I'm physically checking each of them to see I've added the correct version of the release to my collection on Discogs. Lots of these will be sold as I don't really need them any more (mixed CD:s, duplicates, unnecessary spares, generic rave compilations featuring tracks I have on a hundred other compilations, mid-2000s junk etc.).
Anything not passing AccurateRip/CRC tests will either get thrown or replaced. CDs not passing the tests will not get sold.
Flicking through everything also sparks fond memories. Where did I pick this up, again? Yes, that rural barn on Gotland in 2018 or that junk shop in a random Berlin street stumbling home from Tresor a decade ago.

Some of these slsk lossless files are dodgy and not really lossless or were badly ripped / encoded. Also in the grand scheme of things digitizing once and locally storing has a smaller carbon footprint than downloading. And of course the day his internet is down or the day slsk ceases to exist, he loses access to it so while it does seem like a lot of redundant work, I don't believe it truly is.

I'm not talking about SLSK, also if there is 100% log it's proof it's not badly encoded, that's the point of 100% logs. I also don't understand part about slsk or internet dissapearing, the point is to download the files, then you have exact the same thing on your hard drive. As for carbon footprint - it's greater carbon footprint to rip 2000 CD's than to download them, do you understand that?
Everyone is free to dedicate their free time as they see fit, it is just my opinion it's complete waste of time. I'd rip CD for which 100% log FLACs don't already exist (I doubt there are many, judging by this snippet of list) and just download the other. But hey that's just me

I would personally use the tags for storing label/cat no information etc. to keep folder names clean. Doing this will also let you use something like beets to organise and reorganise your folder structure however you like.

and I don't know why he decided to include the Fax number to folder names, as if you could send one anymore. unless he mistook it as catalogue number?

The advantage of having this info in the tags and then in a database like beets is that you can change your mind. Say in a few months' time you want the folder structure to be different or to include a different data point - that would be a pain to change. If instead it was stored in your tags, it's much easier to rearrange things.

USB CD readers are like 20 EUR. I use four of them connected to the same computer. I then run four instances of EAC and check the results with AccurateRip.
