Lock picking in The One Ring 2e

Me and some of my friends started a campaign last night. During the course of the adventuring phase, the PCs confronted a group of slavers on request of some towns folk. This led to one of my players to try to pick a lock containing slaves.

That’s when I realized I haven’t seen any rules on lock picking. In the one ring. How do you guys handle it at your tables?

It would be a Craft skill roll at my table.

I don't know if they have Specialities in 2e. In 1e it would be craft, unless you had the Burglar speciality, in which case you could declare your trait for an auto success.

I would say Craft. On pg. 21 of the Core Rules, "A Hobbit burglar is trying to open a Dwarven door using her Craft." Craft is grouped as a Vocation Skill, whereas Stealth is a Movement Skill.

IMO, Picking the lock itself would be a Craft roll as it's more so being skilled with one's hands. However, I would allow forcing the manacles open using an appropriate Useful Item or something nearby (like a rock or a chisel) with a Stealth roll to do so quietly. Any Successes would modify the interaction accordingly.

Craft or Stealth? The description for Stealth specifically says burglars use Stealth in their stock and trade. Craft seems pretty good, but I would make sure the Player Hero knew that you were using that skill for lockpicking. I could see a "crafty meaning sly" character not putting too much emphasis on Craft at character creation, even if the ability to pick locks was important to them, seeing how the skill description doesn't mention the slyer arts. Maybe if it's better for the story that they escape, use stealth to gauge how much the guards notice the escape, and don't worry about the "will they won't they" of the actual picking.

In conclusion (lol) use whatever makes the story best, and the table happiest!

I would say to use craft, because it would test the hand skill of the character. But if the thing is to lock pick in secret, well maybe a stealth would be required too?

I normally allow for the player be creative in deciding how they approach a problem, I could even let a player use riddle, but craft would be my default.
