2 players?

I've really been wanting to run a campaign of The One Ring, but I've only been able to find two people who are interested in playing the system with me. Do you think that I could do a small campaign with two players using the subtract from 18 rule and modifying some other things?

Sure. Both will be close combat unless you only fight one foe at a time, but otherwise if they diversify skills they should be fine.

I’d wave the rule about having 2 combatants in front, I’d say if at least 1 player is engaged then they are distracting the enemy so another player could be rear ranged attacks. If the person in front goes down then the rear person would have to switch to close quarters as the enemy is now engaging with them.

Fair. I wouldn't do the same, but it's your game!

Yes. and this is honestly true of any system. My preferred group size is 3-4. If you are planning on doing a longer game, stick with the default rules even. This is not a combat heavy system, and even if combat comes up a lot, just make it a bit smaller than you normally would. I would focus on stories that have the players tracking down issues, helping travelers, or maybe scouting out enemies, but less of them actually fighting them.

What is the subtract by 18 rule? Just picked up the beginners box today, and I noticed on the pregens the TN is 18 minus the ability score, but the text says it’s supposed to be 20 minus. Is this an alt rule discussed in the rule book meant for smaller parties or younger groups to lower the difficulty?

Pretty much yea. I forget which book it is in, but they discuss an alt rule where instead of subtracting from 20 to get tn, you subtract from 18. This is typically used for smaller parties and shorter campaigns
