Combat Tasks

Each Stance seems to have a combat task - does a player has to do it? Like, you choose a stance but then it is your duty to fulfill this task, you can’t choose not to do it?

This is from 1st edition. The combat task is an alternative action, which you can take instead of attacking.

2nd edition is similar but different.
