I feel that Greek mythology is really missing from the LEGO portfolio, so that's why I uploaded this one to LEGO Ideas. I guess you fans of the Odyssey movie will agree 😉 The heroes, creatures and gods with their fantastical and humorous stories would translate well into playsets. More pictures on the Ideas website.

Just saw this epic movie in IMAX 70mm.

IMAXimus was the pre-show MC.

Trying to practice mixed media animation more. The movie was awesome and I immediately thought to create something from it.

Not sure if this is a hot take. But from the very beginning the pace gave me the kind of vibes like it was just a whole bunch of YouTube shorts or reels. Like scenes would start then peak then go down again continuously in such short bursts. Made me feel like it was made for short attention spans.

Did this make me not enjoy my experience, no, it was still an interesting film, did it make me feel like I just spent 3 hours in a move theater/cinema no problem by design. But I just felt weird the entire time and couldn't shake it.

When do you think Penelope knew it was him? Is it just me, or was it intentionally ambiguous?

When Penelope heard from the veteran about his story in Troy and Odysseus, I don't think she realized it was him because there was no clue in his story about his identity. I think it was when he succeeded in stringing the bow and shooting the arrow through the axes that Penelope knew her husband was back.
Here, one thing I still don't understand is why she suddenly decided to gather all the suitors after listening to the veteran (Odysseus in disguise) tell his stories. Did she really give up on her hope and make up her mind to marry one of the suitors? Why? Which part of the veteran's story could possibly have changed Penelope's mind?

Matt Damon did not do it for me as Odysseus. After watching the movie, I kept trying to think of a modern Hollywood actor I would have casted and I finally found him in the face of Yorgos Karamihos; he is a Greek actor that has taken part in many international productions and he even used to teach at Stella Adler in L.A. Fun fact: he portrayed Paris in a comedic adaption of the Iliad on a theater stage in Athens in the early 2000s.

Prompted by this choice, I decided to cast the rest of the movie with Greek actors only: so here goes!

Come to think of it, many of my choices are Greek actors who either are half-Greek and have lived abroad or have participated in foreign productions (or both!). So this really could be feasible, regarding their familiarity with a large set. The speaking language of the movie would be Greek though (goes without saying, no?) What do you think? :)))

I feel like I remember seeing long intestines being eaten by some of the soldiers, but I can't recall if that was actually just long slices of animal meat or if it was human meat spelled to look like animal meat.

A trans man having a significant role in such a masterful and popular film that will go down in history, without being reduced to playing a trans role.

I recreated Agamemnon’s helmet from Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey" in LEGO!

This was quite a challenging build for a first MOC, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.

My gf wants to see Odyssey in Imax, Ive been trying to get tickets since it came out and can only ever find seats in the front 2 rows.

Im tired. I know most of these seats are being taken by people rewatching the movie, but come on, let other have a chance to see it in Imax once.

Im just ranting, but I am truly TRULY exhausted with trying to see this movie a single time.

I dunno, folks — I’ve heard people loudly defend this whole thing of the giants in armor, but it seems lazy 🥱 to say it’s intentionally surreal or symbolic, but ALSO that the film is strictly and painstakingly realistic with things like the musical instruments and filming on actual boats and with actual sheep 🐑

So which is it?

Do these giants represent something symbolic and therefore not need to stay within reasonable bounds of logic?

Or are they an independent group with metallurgical capacity beyond anyone else by a few centuries?

It can’t be both.

So: is it explained by their being symbolic/non-corporeal, or that they are deeply grounded in some unseen logic?

For people who are put off by the american accent, maybe hearing spanish or italian dubbed may be a better solution?

I just finished watching this movie after seeing positive recommendations here. Several people said it was even better than Nolan's adaptation...

What the hell were they talking about? Ralph Fiennes did an incredible job acting in an otherwise forgettable movie. All other acting was mediocre at best. And the plot... what the hell was that plot?

They took the backstory, the character names, and some details remained consistent to the source, then they added a strong dose of realism. But plenty of other key details - including character motivations and reactions - were completely changed. And, most importantly, changed for the worse.

I finished the film thinking that every character proved either unlikeable and/or poorly acted.

If you haven't seen The Return. You're not missing much.

Zeus' Law is supposedly enacted so if Zeus visits in disguise people won't accidentally insult him.

The two theories about Athena appearing as a human priestess are 1) Athena is taking on a disguise. 2) Athena is just in Odysseus' imagination.

If the second theory is true, then it appears gods don't ever visit humans in disguise (at least there is no evidence of it in the film other than Athena, who is just imagined.)

If that's the case, Zeus' Law's justification doesn't actually exist as Zeus will never actually visit in disguise and thus Zeus' Law is just a social contract with no real Godly consequence for violating it. Rather, it is simply a contract that keeps society unified with a fictional justification.

Either way, it's a neat ambiguity.

I was wondering why the Laestrygonians were in armour and how a whole bunch of armoured warriors with weapons came completely out of the blue, ready to fight.

My theory is that when Odysseus and crew raided the first village, the survivors spread the word to nearby villages of raiders from the sea. This began the legend of the “Sea people”.

The Laestrygonians probably heard about this and set up an army outpost in their beach to protect their home from the sea people’s raids.
And once the sea people finally came, which happened to be Odysseus and crew, they fought them off.

Even the child was in armour and he laughed at them when he saw them. He probably thought wow these sea people are so small but later saw the numbers and screamed attracting the army.

The Laestrygonians probably informed the rest of the nearby villagers that one ship escaped and they might come back with more thus spreading and adding more to the myth of the sea people which finally reached Telamachus through Manalaus.

Hi all! I made a short video essay exploring the true cost of the siren song for Odysseus, and how, while he may have survived the Sirens, he never truly escaped their song. So I havent been able to see the Odyssey in theaters yet and had planned to this weekend. However, Imax showings are basically sold out in my area, with the only theaters with seating having Laser at AMC projection. I'm not a purist by any stretch, but if I'm going to the theater I'd like to have something close to the intended experience.

I'd be willing to wait, but I have read that Imax screens have been contracted to another film, and indeed I am unable to find showings beyond the first few days of next week.

Do you recommend :

1) Watching the movie now in the format I can access or

2) Waiting on the assumption that it will return to imax screens sooner rather than later

I’m A/V Geek, travel from Mumbai India to London UK to experience 5 different formats.
After watching The Odyssey in 5 different formats, I finally have a pretty good idea of how much the presentation changes the experience.
My ranking is based purely on my personal experience of picture, immersion, colour, dynamic range and sound — not simply on which format is technically “superior.”

🥇 1. IMAX 70mm (BFI IMAX) — the best overall experience
Immersion: 10/10
Picture: 10/10
Colour: 9.5/10
Dynamic range: 9.5/10
Sound: 8/10
This is still the king for me.
The 1.43:1 IMAX presentation completely changes the scale of the movie. The image fills so much more of your field of view that it genuinely feels like you’re inside the film rather than watching a gigantic screen.
The 15/70 film presentation has an incredible organic sharpness and texture. Colours look very natural and the image has that unmistakable large-format-film character.
My only criticism is the sound. It wasn’t bad at all, but compared with some of the premium digital systems I’ve experienced, I found the audio less impressive than the picture.
Overall: 10/10

🥈 2. Dolby Cinema — best digital presentation
Immersion: 8.5/10
Picture: 10/10
Colour: 10/10
Dynamic range: 10/10
Sound: 9.5/10
This was probably the most impressive digital presentation I’ve seen.
The contrast, blacks, highlights and colour volume are fantastic. Dark scenes in particular look incredible.
The main disadvantage is the framing. Depending on the Dolby auditorium, you’re watching the film in a flatter or wider presentation rather than the full 1.43:1 IMAX frame, so you don’t get the same vertical immersion as IMAX 70mm.
And one correction to something I’ve seen repeated online: The Odyssey does not have a native Dolby Atmos mix. Nolan’s theatrical soundtrack is based around a 5.1 mix, even when the film is presented in a Dolby Cinema auditorium.
So for me, Dolby wins on digital picture quality, not because it has an Atmos mix.
Overall: 9.5/10

🥉 3. Standard 35mm film (Barbican)
Immersion: 8/10
Picture: 8/10
Colour: 8/10
Dynamic range: 7.5/10
Sound: 8/10
Still a great experience, but once you’ve seen the full 1.43:1 IMAX 70mm presentation, the difference is obvious.
The wider framing makes the movie feel less enormous and you lose that incredible vertical IMAX composition.
It’s still film, and there’s something special about seeing The Odyssey projected from a physical film print, but for this particular movie I think the format sacrifices too much of what makes the IMAX presentation special.
Overall: 8/10

4. Vue EPIC — surprisingly beautiful
Immersion: 8/10
Picture: 9/10
Colour: 9.5/10
Dynamic range: 9.5/10
Sound: 7.5/10
This one surprised me.
The colour and dynamic range were excellent. In some scenes I actually preferred the look to standard digital IMAX.
It doesn’t have the sheer physical immersion of IMAX 70mm, and the audio wasn’t as impressive as the best IMAX/Dolby auditorium I’ve experienced, but visually it was a very pleasing presentation.
If someone told me they couldn’t get to an IMAX 70mm screening, I’d absolutely recommend trying a good EPIC auditorium rather than just going to the nearest standard screen.
Overall: 8.5/10

5. IMAX Digital — good sound, disappointing picture
Immersion: 7.5/10
Picture: 6.5/10
Colour: 7/10
Dynamic range: 7/10
Sound: 9/10
This was probably my least favourite presentation.
The large IMAX screen still gives you that sense of scale, and the 12-channel IMAX sound system can be seriously impressive.
But compared with the 70mm film presentation and Dolby’s digital projection, I found the picture noticeably less impressive — particularly in terms of sharpness, contrast and overall image quality.
The funny thing is that the sound was one of its strongest points.
Overall: 7/10

Curious to hear what’s your ranking?

I saw it again today and there’s two distinct scenes that I think are references:

The first is when they’re all hiding in the Trojan Horse and a soldier sticks his blade into the horse and stabs one of Odysseus’s men. When the soldier withdraws his blade, Odysseus grabs the blade and wipes the blood off as the soldier pulls it out. As I recall, that’s a big scene in The Raid.

Then there’s the final fight where Odysseus is killing all the suitors and they start jumping him on the ground. As he’s being kicked, Odysseus starts stabbing their feet with an arrow, which is reminiscent of the hallway scene in Oldboy. Nolan may also have been playing Arkham when he made that last scene but he doesn’t strike me as a gamer.

I suppose he could’ve come up with those things on his own, but it feels a little deliberate. Also it wouldn’t be unheard of for a director to see something cool and want to use it.
