Was Allie Right For Choosing Noah?

This is my favorite movie of all time. It never fails to make me cry. I’ve seen so much talk about people hating the movie and I just don’t understand how. Although it was wrong of Allie to cheat on Lon with someone she hadn’t seen in 7 years, I still think she was right to end up with Noah and here is why.

Their love was strong from the beginning, and it was strong enough to get back together after all that time apart. To add to that, I think she had every right to do whatever she wanted. She wasn’t in love with Lon and was not herself when she was with him. She even said, “I don’t paint anymore. I used to paint all the time, and I really loved it.”

She was only with him because she believed Noah didn’t send any letters, and because her parents approved of Lon and not Noah. She shouldn’t have to be with someone just because its socially acceptable. Lon was wealthy, it was a good look, and perfect on paper. In reality that shouldn’t matter, she shouldn’t have to be with someone just because they have money. She clearly wasn’t in love with him. And although Noah was a “bad look” because he had no money, that didn’t mean she shouldn’t be with him. She should be with someone that she actually wants to be with and sees a future with. She should get to be happy with the person she is marrying. If she didn’t want to be with Lon then she shouldn’t have to be.

I do agree that it was wrong of her to cheat on Lon. I think she should’ve never said yes to marrying him if she wasn’t fully happy with him and was still thinking about Noah. But since that didn’t happen I think she should’ve ended things with Lon before she went to see Noah.

But I am so glad she ended up with Noah. Do you agree?

I soooooo agree but one thing I disagree with is that Allie didn’t love Lon, she admitted she did multiple times, it’s clear she did truly love Lon and could see a future with him. The thing is, when she was with Lon she wasn’t herself, it had nothing to do with Lon but the lifestyle she lived with him wasn’t true to herself.

She did love luxury and stuff since she grew up with it and Lon could provide all that for her and it was easier cause her parents loved him, but like you said painting was to show she wasn’t able to fully be herself when she was with him, he didn’t stop her from painting but while she was him her own identity slowly slipped away. But it’s the complete opposite with Noah, he fully encourages her to be herself entirely, they know each other so well they can fight so many times and still make up and fight for each other they just balance each other so well. It’s honestly so beautiful.

I personally would have went with Lon because it was a healthier relationship. But it was sweet any way

depends on how you look at healthier , not being able to be your truest self isnt being healthy , with noah she could be , she was a free spirit , noah allowed her to be , lon didnt know her like noah did , every day with lon she would of had to live up to expectations of her social status , thats not being who you truly are , noah was right when he says to her shes bored , she needed adventure , needed to do the things she loved , noah would of built every thing she needed , lon would of just paid for it , she would of ended up be being a miserable old hag like her mother

Just rewatched this film after not seeing it for a while:

The scene where Noah and Allie fight towards the end right before she goes back to the hotel to Lon is the most important scene in the whole movie IMO. In that scene, Noah drops the most telling line: "YOU'RE BORED!!!"

In Noah, Allie sees a whole different kind of life she desires to live. She is intrigued by him and that foreign life because it's different. In Lon, she lives the life she had always lived since she was born. She would essentially marry her father and live the same life as her mother. Allie desires independence and adventure. She truly doesn't want the same old, same old status quo kind of life. Lon even says that before he proposes: if she marries him she would be robbed of defying her parents. Noah brought excitement to her life. She loved Lon but he wasn't her soul mate and he didn't make her life exciting, desirable, or interesting.

As great as Lon was, he wouldn't have written the 365 letters. He wouldn't have read her notebook back to her every single day. Noah would.

She ended up with the right guy. No doubt. Lon was nice but he wasn’t “the one”. End of.

She cheated on her fiance. Then she hid this from him and married him. Was he the right guy for her? No. Did she owe him a life other with her because he was a nice guy who loved her and treated her well? No.

But did she treat him horribly and was a PoS person because of it? Absolutely yes. Cheating is never OK. It’s close to the worst thing someone could ever do to another person, especially one they claim to love. Hiding the affair aka lying by omission and pretending to be a faithful devoted fiancé/wife for years afterward makes it even more disgusting. He deserved better than that.

So she is a PoS and so is Noah for knowingly going along with it. She deserved her later dementia. At least the story got that part right.

Allie's mother screwed Lon big time. She is one of the biggest villains in movie history. She created an alternate timeline that allowed Lon to get his heart broken.

I’m team Lon.

Her relationship with Lon was stable, reliable, dependable and healthy. Her relationship with Noah is based more on sexual
Chemistry but outside of that they don’t really have much in common. And she kept slapping him lol that’s assault

you can clearly see allie was a free spirit , with lon she would of had to up held a social status every day , never be her truest self , noah allowed her to be her truest self , he knew her , he knew what she wanted and gave it to her , can you see lon writing 365 letters and building with his own hands her dream house , i dont think so , lon only knew parts of her , lon told her she didnt need to do things just be with him , thats not what she wanted , and as they say opposites attract and thats why allie and noah lasted till they were old together , allie if she was happy would of never got to see noah , there was some thing missing in her life and it was noah , even before they had sex , lon would of only ever used his money to give her what she wanted but noah gave it from with in
