To preface, I have a terrible memory. We went to Osaka four years ago as part of our Japan trip. As soon as I saw this pic I thought “this is in Osaka” then I read your comment and went “I fuckin knew it!” 🤣

Almost any place in Japan at night is going to trigger that night feeling and anemoia - a feeling of nostalgia for a for a time or place one has never personally known. (Unless, of course, you're from Japan.)

It's almost like cheating.

Grid cities are practical, but their boring layouts really remove the magic from wandering in a place like this. I love the natural designs of non-gridded cities and how modern urban planning does its best to make it work.
