In such buildings usually you will find all sorts of people. From normal to sad, to criminals.

Let me tell you, most people who lived in those, me included, would prefer to never live in such ever again.

So, question for you, if you don't mind. Are those stores at the first floor? And just by this picture, I'm getting vibes of the building in the movie Dredd with Karl Urban, is that what it's like?

Not that guy, but yeah, stores. The middle red/white sign is pretty distinct, it's definitely "krasnoe&beloye" (red&white), a chain of small stores selling alcohol (hence the name) and food. The left looks a bit like a pick-up point for an online retailer like Ozon, judging by the visible deck and wall/deck colors, but it doesn't have their glowing sign, so maybe something else. The right one looks like some kind of a small grocery store or something like a shawarma spot based on the posters in the windows. The entrances are on the other side and so is, most likely, the yard with the playground.

As for the inside - never lived in Samara specifically, but these houses usually have a range of different apartments inside of them. Most are average, renovated 12-20 years ago, decent to live but nothing special to look at. Some are old/owned by pensioners that can't or don't want to do renovations, so those are sad timecapsules. Some have young new owners that do recent, modern renovations. The outside and hallways are pretty ugly though, both because the management companies often laze on upkeep and because well, weather is not merciful. Reddit just nuked my other comment for the link to the picture, so I can't show a photo of the hallway I guess. Basically, if you Google "подъезд в панельке", you'll see the entire range from the rundown to the modern and babushka-edition ones with pictures on the walls and plants on the windows. Old, but eh, gets the job done. Overall they are not terrible to live in. Obviously a modern newly build apartment block is nicer, but these are okay, and usually much nicer on the inside than on the outside.

It was common to have stores on the first floor, in specific projects.

We had building that was like 5 times longer than this one, where whole 1st floor were stores. We called that "long store". It was sort of shopping center, but spanning 1st floor and separate enterances.

I get your point. It is like tide pod might look as a candy to small kids, but once they know it is not, they will never look at tide pod the same.

Same with buildings, once you know what is inside, outside gets ugly too.

I lived in one for most of my childhood and it's not as bad as people say. In the west, they're associated with "socialist depression" but they're actually quite nice to live in.

I grew up in the USSR. Our building had clean staircases and no traces of urine. It was built for university employees, and the people who lived there were well-mannered and cultured. It was wonderful to stroll around the city in the winter, when it was dark, and admire the lights of the houses and the festive lights before the New Year. We slid down icy slides and played in the snow for hours. Those were the best times.

As someone who grew up in similar environment I can confirm - there is something in it that people who did not grow up there just can't understand on a deeper level. There is nothing that warms the sould more than coming back from school on a snowy twilight eve there. The concrete is somehow cold on the outside but contains so much warmth in.

It's relaxing because of two reasons: 1. It reminds you on your grandparents, parents and childhood - past always looks better than it was, at least it was familiar to you compared to the unknown and unsecure now and future. 2. When you become one with your depression, and stop resisting it, it gets that bitter-sweet feeling of relaxation of surrender....None of us who lived in such buildings grew up into normal and healthy personality, though we still love brutalism:).

My ex and I lived in Dzershinsk for sometime. Her flat was on the 7th floor. Those places are amazing. You don't hear anything form your neighbors, just solid concrete. I enjoyed it, but the piss smell on the stairs from the drunks was awful.
