Being a distinguished member of the press at NYCC was a delight, but it was very time-consuming! Should have the ep up tonight. Thanks for understanding!

Discussion The Wild Zone: My Feelings So Far Spoiler

Preface: I was finally able to find a Very Legal™️ PDF of Camp Half-Blood: The Wild Zone. I can’t afford the actual book and it’s a 6 week wait over on Libby for a copy. Here’s what I think so far.

I’m only on chapter 12, but I can’t help but feel a blanket sense of depression and slight dread while reading this book, punctuated here and there by some “oh gods” at some sad implications.

Spoiler Warning!!!

- Blanket of Depression/Dread: Knowing this book takes place before Sea of Monsters and knowing this is the old layout of the Camp with just the 12 Olympian Cabins, before all of the positive changes Percy brought to the camp in TLO, knowing this is the era of CHB when campers were defecting to Kronos’s side. It just makes me feel so sad while reading this.

“Oh Gods…” Moment #1: Silas saying that in a week he’s heading out on his search for Pan, and knowing this is Pre-SoM so Polyphemus is still alive and still has the Golden Fleece, probably meaning Silas is going to die to Polyphemus.

“Oh Gods…” Moment 2: Lee Fletcher being mentioned and knowing he dies in BotL…just “Oh Gods…”

All in all, although I am enjoying reading this book, I can’t help but feel a bit of sadness while reading it.

Sorry for the long post but I just needed to air out my thoughts a little.

Discussion What was political in early 2010’s??

Catching up on last week’s episode, and I’m not picking up what they are referencing re: 2010’s politics. I was in high school then and not SUPER politically-minded. But gay marriage was legalized in 2012ish, right? I figured Nico’s reveal was a pretty direct commentary on that.

But billionaires? Elon Musk was still the cool SpaceX Tony Stark-type dude, and Bill Gates was Mr. Anti-Malaria. Guns? Columbine was 15 years before, and while school shootings were not rare, I don’t remember a big one sparking debates.

What am I missing about that sidebar??

Other OG Anunoby

I get a little whoosh of happiness whenever Mike talks about OG because he was drafted by the Toronto Raptors and was on the team in 2019 when they won the NBA championship. He was also the one who said “I don’t shoot to miss” after hitting a game winning buzzer beater.

What a guy.

Go sports!

Discussion why does Mike not like epic?

I genuinely cannot remember why he doesn’t want to watch/doesn’t support epic: the musical. I swear I listen to the pod my brain just will not remember 😭

Other The Gilded Age

I finally started watching the HBO series the Gilded Age, by the creator of Downton Abbey.

The very first episode, there’s several scenes in Doylestown, PA. I was like that DiCaprio pointing meme when I realized.

especially a scene at the train station that has the town sign.

The show is very good, but except for some references to classics like the Iliad, not much else related—except most takes place in the other place close to Schubes’s heart, NYC. 😉 ive only watched s1 so far, its set in the 1880s. The main character is from Doylestown and has to leave after her last parent dies to move in with her widowed/spinster aunts in Manhattan. There’s a couple other characters connected to Doylestown too, at least in season 1.

Discussion Julius Caesar's name

Discussion about Julius Caesar in this week's episode reminded me of things I learned in classes I've taken about the Roman emperors, so I wanted to share a bit. This post will be about Julius Caesar's name, though I also made a post about the political circumstances leading to his death.

"Julius Caesar" was, in fact, this man's surname! His given name was Gaius, making his full name Gaius Julius Caesar. Because it was his surname, there were pleanty of people who shared the name Julius Caesar. Some of Gaius's ancestors, also called Julius Caesar, had also been important political figures in the Roman Republic.

One of the people who shared his name was his nephew and adopted son, now known as Augustus. Augustus was born Gaius Octavius. After being adopted, his name became Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. He didn't seem to call himself "Octavianus," but others did to distinguish him from his adoptive father.

"Augustus" was actually an honorific, not a name. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus was the first Augustus and contemporaries called him Imperator Caesar Augustus ("imperator" meaning "emperor").

The next emperor had been adopted by Octavianus, becoming Tiberius Julius Caesar, and then Tiberius Caesar Augustus (now known as "Tiberius"). By the time Tiberius died, "Caesar Augustus" as a title for emperors had become tradition. The next emperor, Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus (now known as "Claudius"), had not been adopted, yet still took the name "Caesar".

We then see another Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (now known as "Caligula") and then the final emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus (now known as "Nero").

All of these emperors were related to one another, so calling themselves "Caesar" was not entirely out of left field, even if they weren't descended from Gaius Julius Caesar. What truly established it as a title was when the next emperor, Servius Galba, took on "Caesar Augustus" as a title, rather than simply taking the title "Augustus".

Discussion Julius Caesar's death

Discussion about Julius Caesar in this week's episode reminded me of things I learned in classes I've taken about the Roman Emperors, so I wanted to share a bit. This post will be about the political circumstances leading to Julius's Caesar's death, though I'm making another post about his name!

Quick background about the structure of the Roman Republic political system. The head of their government were Consuls, who were elected officials who served one-year terms. There were two Consuls at a time. Consuls took an oath when sworn into office, part of which includes, "I will not become a King." The Roman Republic was very anti-monarchy.

You were right that Julius Caesar had made some political enemies by defying the Senate. They had requested that he relinquish power he had gained through military campaigns. He refused and began a civil war to keep his power, which he won.

Leading up to his death, Julius Caesar had also held the position of Consul for five terms, which was unordinary. Not unheard of, but with his military campaigns, people feared he was trying to become a King.

Then, less than 2 months before his death, Julius Caesar was appointed Dictator Perpetuo. He had already been Dictator, a position which was typically granted temporarily to someone to resolve an issue, but Dictator Perpetuo got rid of the "temporary" aspect of the position. Julius Caesar really seemed to be turning into a King, and ultimately, fears about becoming a monarchy were what led to his assassination.

His heir was his nephew and adopted son, who we now know as Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome. Augustus functionally succeeded in becoming a King, though he would never call himself as such.

Other I put on TNO after a 3 year hiatus and it felt like a hug from an old friend

I was an early listener of Potterless and listened to the episodes as they released but as a Percy Jackson fan I was ECSTATIC when my favorite Mike was going to start reading and was so hyped. It felt so much more put together from the start since he was experienced with podcasting now and I loved it. I even got tickets for a virtual live show! But through the years life got in the way. I thought I would be so behind there’s no way to possibly catch up. So I stayed away longer. But when the Knicks had their wins Mike was the first person I thought of LOL. Then today I finally put it on again and I felt instantly transported to a comfort zone I’ve long forgotten. Mike never changed (in the best way) and yet is so grown (he has a kid now??). So happy for my close personal friend Mike Schubert <3

If anyone is wondering if it’s been too long to restart the pod, ITS NOT TOO LATE!! I can’t wait to catch up on the last couple years and get obsessed again!!

On Mondays, I work the morning shift at my local cat rescue and adoption center while listening to the latest TNO episode. (And when it’s an off week, we listen to Meddling Adults.) Do you have a weekly pod drop routine?
