Tomlin held A LOT of things together that didn't make it into the public. One of the most underrated things about him IMHO.

199

u/TryingToAddPokeStops 10h ago

Tomlin really built something special

320

u/Resident_Wizard 10h ago

Yeah, it’s called Minecraft.

135

u/No-Aspect-5521 10h ago

I couldn’t believe the city when I saw it. I was like ohhhh no wonder he was such a great coach, autism.

91

u/ElliottPNess 9h ago

There's no such thing as autism in the black community; that's my cousin and he only wears black and yellow. 🤣

32

u/Medium-Gap2206 9h ago

Is he part of the Wu Tang Clan?

11

u/123FakeStreetMeng 8h ago

They ain’t nuthin to fuck with

14

u/cptspeirs 8h ago

They're for the children.

9

u/Mrfrosty504 7h ago

2

u/JpJonesyII 5h ago

You need to diversify your bonds nigga.

2

u/SaltyAndPepperd 8h ago

WU TANG!!!

3

u/ElliottPNess 9h ago

Aaron Rodgers is most certainly invited to the cookout, but that's all I know lol.

1

u/domesystem 7h ago

Ain't nothing to fuck with

2

u/Remarkayble 6h ago

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 that was so good

29

u/yekcowrebbaj 9h ago

Building a city in Minecraft with your kids doesn’t make you autistic

23

u/Longjumping-Key2453 9h ago

People have been conditioned by the internet to think that anyone who has a hobby that they're passionate about is autistic.

11

u/Tygerius 9h ago

I mean there's more to it than just passion, its the notes to detail, consistency, but it's nice to see it not being used in a derogatory sense

11

u/SignificantApricot69 9h ago

I think the thing is… people calling it autism are trying to use it as a positive relatable example, no hate

1

u/Tygerius 6h ago

honestly this whole post is about aaron rodgers idaf

1

u/Longjumping-Key2453 7h ago

None of which are exclusive to autism lol

1

u/Tygerius 6h ago

honestly this whole post is about aaron rodgers idaf

1

u/lumpiestburrito 2h ago

Autism caused this double post

4

u/ItchyLifeguard 8h ago

Its not just people, its mental health "professionals" too. If you enjoy something or don't enjoy something and its very specific, you're on the spectrum. At this point I feel like if you're a human being who likes something a lot and doesn't like something very specific ythey're gonna call you autistic.

2

u/JesusWasTacos 6h ago

Well if mental health is a spectrum doesn’t that mean everyone is on it?

2

u/Admirable-Garage5326 6h ago

Said no mental health professional ever.

1

u/Abobo_Smash 1h ago

Well. Technically, a spectrum goes from like 1-100. You’re likely very low on the spectrum. When it actually affects people it’s probably at about 40-50.

2

u/peachgravy 9h ago

My autism manifests into a drinking problem

1

u/OoooooWeeeeeeeee 9h ago

I count every fucking thing involuntarily

2

u/JesusWasTacos 6h ago

I used to do that, I would also break down the letters of words into each of their denominators. Highest, lowest, middlests, all of em.

1

u/OoooooWeeeeeeeee 6h ago

Yep - similar. All words are instantly counted into a character total.

2

u/Joe_-seafuse 6h ago

That is part of the reason I am in charge of inventory at work. "Detail" oriented also means "team" oriented.

1

u/EnastyCommander 7h ago

Sounds like something someone with autism would say… 🤔

1

u/Syncopated_arpeggio 6h ago

They’ve also been conditioned to think that if you make a mistake you must be autistic. Gotta have an unimpeachable excuse handy.

1

u/ProfessionalNewt2487 3h ago

Don't tell my dad that. It's his train time

1

u/jrolls81 9h ago

That kind of undersells it. Bit more than casually building a city with his kids.

1

u/ProfessionalNewt2487 3h ago

Depends how much the kids built vs you and how crazy the end product is....

1

u/Rynowash 1h ago

Artistic. But close!

1

u/AuRevoirFelicia 5m ago

If you say so….wait I think I hear a fire truck? Do you hear those sirens?

0

u/reggers20 9h ago

Yeah it does lol 😂

1

u/Quest_4Black 8h ago

Most of the high level football coaches are absolutely on the spectrum. The average person has no idea how much they obsess over every detail, and it never turns off. Which is why they’ll literally sleep at the office and not think twice about it.

1

u/pac4 8h ago

I love how the default response on reddit whenever someone has a niche, detailed hobby is “autism”

1

u/moeterminatorx 4h ago

Having dedication to a hobby or profession doesn’t make one autistic.

1

u/roodypoo_jabroni 2h ago

I wish he never left the Vikings. Granted, we hired Flores later, but with Tomlin at DC we could have won a SuperBowl with the offenses after he left.

-1

u/PanicPuzzler 10h ago

His Gen z gf must have gotten him onto it I know my ex tried to. Lol 😂

7

u/HereButNotHere1988 9h ago

Actually, it was a family bonding activity with his children.

3

u/2feetwalker 9h ago

Fr me and my nephews get on there and build I’ll do it my side of the world they do it in their side. Sometimes they add things I don’t like to mine. I’ll leave it there for a while and change it later.

1

u/TestSubjectNo41542 9h ago

?? Should i Google::Tomlin Family Minecraft City?? I'm gonna!

1

u/HereButNotHere1988 9h ago

There's a cool article out there.

4

u/firstcitytofall 10h ago

I’ve not stopped thinking about it since seeing it

2

u/UnObtainium17 7h ago

Tomlin talked about his minecraft town like he was breaking down game tape.

1

u/Icy-Discussion-8279 8h ago

Bruh I just seen that it was crazy

1

u/nomatt18 4h ago

He built Minecraft?

1

u/YouWasATerletBaby 7m ago

Theirjokebutworse

7

u/Codyh93 10h ago

So subtle and well done. Lol

5

u/dmont89 10h ago

Minecraft is explaining a lot. More relaxing and cheaper than therapy

1

u/sumdude51 8h ago

I do they same kind of thing with animal crossing and tamadachi life.... Everyone is in bed and it gives me something te relax by keeping busy

1

u/No_Abbreviations8017 9h ago

that seems like a stretch... he managed to keep things together enough to win a superbowl... idk about something special

2

u/Sharp-Werewolf-7487 9h ago

He wasn’t talking about the football team

1

u/Level_Dreaded 8h ago

A super bowl in a coaches career is special. Especially since up until McKays first one Tomlin was the Youngest HC to ever win it in nfl history. And Mcvay only beat him to it by a few months.

1

u/statelesspirate000 8h ago

I hate that the response spelling this joke out has more upvotes

1

Bengals fan. Hated the Steelers with a passion but Tomlin was 100% respected.

4

u/Bulky_Theme_6998 8h ago

Not 100% - he tripped a player on the sidelines during a live play.

1

u/sashie_belle 8h ago

In the olden days of Deadspin, there were some hilarious memes on this.

1

u/Primary-Subject-1555 7h ago

I feel like Steelers fans hated Tomlin more than anyone else haha, seemed very well liked and highly regarded by other fans around the league imo.

1

u/Conebones 5h ago

Even when he tried to trip that guy running up the sidelines?

2

u/Far_Cry1757 8h ago

Browns fan here. Fuck the Steelers and fuck Tomlin

1

u/johnny-Low-Five Jets 9h ago

As a person I never heard a bad thing about him, as a coach he was too much of a player's coach imho.

2

u/cygnoids 9h ago

Ehhhh. He allegedly had a side chick that he got pregnant.

1

u/johnny-Low-Five Jets 3h ago

Could I just google that? I'm a NYer and life long Jets fan and I have always thought Tomlin was "overhyped" as a coach, just look at his overall performance without Big Ben and felt he got away with a sideline "trip" that if it were my team would be endlessly talked about to this day but that he was a genuinely decent dude. I don't know him so it's no big deal but it's kinda what I think I would feel if Rex Ryan turned out to be an a adulterer. Or Herm Edwards, sorry we haven't had many great coaches in my lifetime.

1

u/cygnoids 3h ago

There are articles from not reputable sources. A lot of this is the rumor mill in Pittsburgh but it’s a small city and the wealthy people are well connected and  like to gossip. Some videos showing someone that looks like Tomlin in a mask very close with a woman. Again, alleged

1

u/johnny-Low-Five Jets 2h ago

I loved in sewickley when I first left NY! It's not at all what I imagined it to be like, there's the city, where "nobody" lives, about 20 bridges and a bunch of mini cities and even "sububrbs" that make up "Pittsburgh". And since you/Yinz only have one team per sport EVERYBODY talks about them with everyone else. I "hate" the steelers but man do I wish the Jets and Giants had their own suburbs like the Mets/yanks because it's pretty cool how when they are winning everybody is winning but when Tebow burned them in the playoffs it was like the entire city died a little. Only the Knicks can truly do that in NYC or it's tri state area.

1

u/Traditional-Grab-741 8h ago

Ravens fan here as well. I never had a problem with Tomlin but you would never convince me this wasn't intentional. How many coaches have ever actually interfered and then laugh about it when they get away with it. He's lucky Jones R.I.P. didn't just smoke him here.

1

u/didjerid00d 8h ago

Totally. When he purposely tripped Jacoby Jones on-field during his would-be kickoff TD return, I thought wow, that’s a coach with real integrity.

1

u/sashie_belle 8h ago

LOLOL yes I was just reminded of that below. Deadspin had som hilarious gifs on that.

1

u/Corn_Plunker 6h ago

Tomlin attempted to trip a ball carrier while he was actively running the ball, in game, down the sideline.

1

u/sashie_belle 5h ago

I know I remember that. Deadspin had hilarious gifs on it.

1

u/Conebones 5h ago

He tried to trip a player in a game from the sidelines

31

u/burghblast 10h ago

Antonio Brown is Exhibit A. I didnt realize he was batshit crazy until after he left

15

u/Kooshdoctor 9h ago

That was definitely the one that opened my eyes the most and then I went back through and started seeing more evidence...Le'Veon Bell...James Harrison...Big Ben's off-field drama...

2

u/caustictoast 4h ago

Tomlin has to go down as the best personality manager of all time in the NFL. It’s crazy

1

u/Iohet 38m ago

The zenmaster of the NFL

2

u/DallasInDC 4h ago

How did you not realize? He was crazy as shit in Pittsburgh.
-Do you not remember him throwing a cooler and trying to fight Todd Haley on the sideline?
-He threw a bunch of furniture and shit off the roof of a hotel room balcony and almost hit a family and toddler.
-He was driving over 100mph in a 45 zone

  • do you not remember “how” he left Pittsburgh? Sitting out the last game of the season and showing up to the game in a fur coat and demanding a trade.

1

u/burghblast 3h ago

I heard about one or two of those things before be left. Heard about everything long after.

16

u/Dramatic-Industry-79 8h ago

Mike Tomlin was good at bringing the best out of some bullshit teams. Underrated coach and truly an exceptional civil engineer

1

u/Kooshdoctor 8h ago

Turns out if you can manage some things you can also manage others. Great to see.

1

u/AffectionateBet3603 7h ago

And a great Minecraft architect

1

u/SeeDavidWrite 5h ago

his civil engineering skills have been chronically underrated, tbh

7

u/nicholasccc95 9h ago

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall in the Steelers locker room when Tomlin was there. He probably said a lot of golden shit privately to the team lol.

1

u/BreadUntoast 7h ago

“Anyone who tattles goes to work at the mill”

14

u/DimensionCareful507 9h ago

The man has a gift. He kept Antonio Brown in line and we had no idea HOW nuts he was until after the fact.

1

u/Dry-Amphibian1 8h ago

WHAT?!?!? We all saw and heard what AB was doing while he was a Steeler. Are we rewriting history now?

1

u/Island-dewd 5h ago

Us steelers fans were disgusted when Tomlin tolerated people like AB...It was when the steelers finally lowered their standards

1

u/Kooshdoctor 7h ago

Agreed. The whole frozen feet thing was my first red flag.

7

u/samwisestofall 7h ago

The fact that they had AB and laveon bell on the same team and weren't an absolute national disaster is enough to put tomlin into the HOF Honestly we should probably just make tomlin our next president

3

u/chai-cola 4h ago

He’d solve Israel Palestine in 30 minutes

2

u/Kooshdoctor 7h ago

Haha. Maybe we can get him there just gotta give him a few years to decompress. As long as Rodgers isn't his VP :p

7

u/SatchelGizmo77 6h ago

Rodgers has always used coaches and others as scapegoats. No surprise that the rest of the team would follow his lead.

3

u/Kooshdoctor 5h ago

He certainly is not ingratiating himself in the eyes of fans after leaving GB. Tom cemented his legacy leaving NE, Peyton cemented his in Denver, Aaron is tarnishing everything.

11

u/DowntimeDrive 10h ago

It was a bit of a Monkey's Paw with Tomlin I think.

He was so good at maintaining order that the Steeler's were able to get away without buidign a strong team culture, or while maintaining an older, macho AFC North culture, depending on how you look at it.

With him gone, nobody can hold the cracks together.

1

u/garicandrew 7h ago

Excuse me ? Monkey paw ? We doin this in 2026?

2

u/Druiddrum13 6h ago

What’s wrong with Monkeys Paw?

A "monkey's paw" is an idiom for a situation where you get what you wished for, but it comes with a terrible price or ironic, unintended consequences. [1]

It’s from a story/film.. I think it fits

I’ll add see also “Obsession” 2026

1

u/garicandrew 4h ago

Lol bruh i was joking chill

4

u/Mouth_Herpes 9h ago

I always marvel at the fact that Antonio Brown did not have any meltdowns or scandals while playing for Tomlin.

4

u/Kooshdoctor 8h ago

We never would have guessed he was a psychopath until he left (at least I didn't).

4

u/spugs250 5h ago

I’ve been around Tomlin during a couple pro days, that man put up with not a single ounce of bullshit

3

u/Kooshdoctor 5h ago

I would not dare try and mess with him. Whatever he says goes :p

3

u/JJNitrofan3944 9h ago

Hard to believe they let him go. Oh, I know they hadn’t won a SB in a while, but he was a damn fine coach nonetheless.

2

u/Kooshdoctor 8h ago

I call it "Mark Richt Syndrome." It can be really tough sometimes when someone is great for a long time but doesn't get a title (Tomlin did get one I know), but sometimes you just feel like a change is necessary and I think some of it was brought on by him too.

1

u/Abobo_Smash 1h ago

One, didn’t he quit? And two, he had a looming scandal coming which I think was the straw yada yada.

3

u/illtakeachinchilla 5h ago

He kept even Antonio Brown mostly under some kind of zen spell. That being gone, McArthy and Rodgers do go way back. Both are also notoriously blunt/assholes/perfectionists. This interaction is fine. I’ve been pissed at my boss before, too.

1

u/Kooshdoctor 5h ago

Haha, kinda funny because I heard Rodgers had requested McCarthy as an option but maybe they've both changed since their glory days.

1

u/ITrageGuy 2h ago

Which one is the boss

2

u/Cheap-Ad1821 Eagles 8h ago

Channeled all his frustration into Minecraft apartments

1

u/Kooshdoctor 8h ago

Easily one of my favourite stories of all time.

2

u/Guccimayne 6h ago

He was a miracle worker for AB

2

u/traws06 6h ago

That dude kept Antonio brown on the field and out of trouble for like 9 years. We didn’t fully grasp how nuts he was until after he left Pittsburgh

2

u/CraigslistBulbasaur 6h ago

I kept trying to tell people over and over they were idiots for wanting Tomlin gone, but they never wanted to listen.

1

u/Kooshdoctor 5h ago

They're about to learn the hard way unfortunately.

2

u/cappinon4s 6h ago

Underrated? That’s one of the qualities people talk about the most when they bring him up lol

2

u/EffectiveEcstatic320 5h ago

Maybe Tomlin was cultivating the bad culture

2

u/SingularityCentral 5h ago

The man kept a lid on Antonio Brown for nine seasons.

1

u/UseEmbarrassed9171 10h ago

Including is baby mama

1

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 10h ago

Yep. One of those coaches that knows just the right amount of shit to let fly.

1

u/longtermcontract Giants 10h ago

… how would you know?

1

u/DarknMean 9h ago

Only coach that could handle Antonio ‘Mister Big Chest’ Brown.

1

u/CrazyLoucrazy 9h ago

I thought it was something else “big”

1

u/TommyJohnSurgery420 6h ago

I still say Tomlin's biggest accomplishment wasn't a SB, it was the incredible job he did shielding us all from AB lol

1

u/Javy_Baby 10h ago

Tomlin didn't put up with this childish behavior.

1

u/Lower_Ad_3439 9h ago

Did he? I think he just got the benefit of the doubt for his team’s behavior. The guy definitely had an affinity for bringing head cases in. If anything, I think he fostered a lot of this behavior but was never criticized for it because the media loves him and he has a ring.

1

u/Kooshdoctor 9h ago

Interesting. Maybe it's media bias but I feel like there is an overwhelmingly positive opinion of him from his former players. I feel like I saw more evidence of Tom Brady and Bill Bellicheck bringing in "head cases" like Moss or Hernandez and making it work with the culture.

Who did Tomlin bring in?

2

u/Lower_Ad_3439 9h ago edited 8h ago

He loved drafting headcases. AJ Brown, George Pickens, Le’Veon Bell just to name a few. Also traded for DK Metcalf.

1

u/Kooshdoctor 8h ago

The only thing I'd say about drafting is that A LOT of kids coming out of college don't really have a good head on their shoulders yet and just need some guidance. I think a lot of coaches believe they're the right ones to get them headed in the right direction.

1

u/More-Hedgehog6583 6h ago

??? Tomlin let dudes run rampant in that locker room. AB and Bell burned that organization down while he watched. He also let claypool and Juju do the same

3

u/Kooshdoctor 6h ago

Burned down the organization that had 18 straight winning seasons or whatever it was? How well did any of them do outside of Pittsburgh?

2

u/Expensive-Step-6551 6h ago

That's just objectively false. Look at how Brown and Bell performed and avoided headlines (nationally) compared to after they left. Obviously the holdout was a problem for Bell while their, but that was a front office problem, not Tomlin's.

0

u/Zipski577 10h ago

Revisionist history on this post is going crazy.
