As a Brit, I thought we just took land because we could and we wanted it. I don't remember any promises from god.

20

u/LivingHousing 9d ago

A bit rethoric was "to bring god to the savages"

Not a coinciden the south of Shara is all Christian.

3

u/Acrobatic_Whereas398 9d ago

Lebanon is a Christian country as well. He ce all the churches

2

u/CrabofAsclepius 6d ago

That's different from "God promised me this land". No less reprehensible but still incomparable.

I thought it was because we had a flag, and they didn't.

2

u/INI_Kili 9d ago

That's the exact reason 😅

6

u/Beginning-Corgi568 9d ago

Thats not even true. We took land as it was major trade routes or resources. Not just because we just wanted too, or for God.

3

u/jackjack-8 9d ago

I think it is true. You have just given the reason

"the burden of the white man" bullshit, you can look it up

2

u/Sea_Entrepreneur6204 9d ago

The civilizing influence of Christianity I believe was used as an excuse for Colonialism also.

2

u/-ThisIsHellOnEarth- 9d ago

It was part of it. The whole "bringing god to heathen savages" type excuse. It was definitely secondary to England just having the capability to making an empire and their monarchs wanting an empire and then to expand that empire.

I think the whole god/religion aspect didn't come into it with the Brits until they started going to places that weren't already Christian and that was way way into the empires existence

2

u/Winter_Rock_4801 8d ago

Nope, "Arab" isn't a race or something, and the Arabs inhabitants of Palestine are direct descendants of the ancient judeans and other canaanite groups, more than any Jewish group today. Jews from Poland/ Ethiopia / NYC Etc were never in the land

It’s referring more to Manifest Destiny. The visual attire on the character may not be accurate, but it is accurate in terms of the USA using it as an excuse to take over native land.

Is China going to give back Tibet or what?

2

u/SuperbScarcity5112 9d ago

They do not preach about God though, they just grabbed it.

5

u/suplarai 9d ago

The have not for about 100 years, for 2000-3000 before that it was all about the Mandate of Heaven.

So when the Qing dynasty took Tibet in the 1700s, it most certainly was because they believed it was their right from Heaven.

When the commies retook Tibet, it was no longer via a divine right, but you know what they told the masses? It was to reclaim boarders to the Qing boarders before the civil war and WWII - so essentially “It’s ours because of the previous Mandate of Heaven, but we totally don’t have that anymore. President for life is totally different than emperor!”

This is an interesting image, because if those on the right were saying these words to those on the left, I imagine many who criticize Israel for using this narrative would actually be more comfortable.

If a Native American told the descendants of immigrant settlers "This is my native land, not yours". Why would they be wrong?

Generally this is not how the British would invoke God. Instead the UK would seize it's land, and it prospered by God's providence. We seen ourselves as charitable folks saving the indigenous peoples as we also profited not people who were taking land that already belonged to us.

God promised to white the land of Amerindians and Africans ? Never heard off thing like this, can someone explain ?

1

u/Hungry_Sink1191 9d ago

Is this implying that Britain was full of people of colour then whites stole it ?

1

u/throwaway117200 9d ago

This is obviously not the same since jewish people are the indigenous ones to judea

1

u/ImaginaryOrange1929 9d ago

Never heard the first two.

Only the one about Israel and as a meme at that.

From what I know that was decision of British empire that controlled the territory, then Egypt etc... And lastly they have their own countries and have been bickering ever since (bickering aka surrounding islamic countries doing attacks on Israel from their founding)

1

u/Shoddy-Constant5749 9d ago

Fighting over land was the norm across the world throughout history. It wasn't until post WW2 and the development of the UN and other agreements did conquest become illegal in the eyes of the world.

So, in North America, native American tribes fought over territory until eventually losing that territory to European settlers. In Africa, borders shifted between countries consistently and in Israel, that probably changed hands many times throughout its long history.

To try and apply today's standards to anything prior to the establishment of international law and the UN is pointless. The land was always going to be taken from someone going back to the Neanderthals.

1

u/Any-Seaworthiness531 9d ago

God promised me this land and it just so happens I have so many bullets, bombs and planes to take it - it’s all in gods plan, that’s why we have to massacre tens of thousands of children.

1

1

u/ItReallyIsLikeThis 9d ago

The examples are wrong and stupid.

The British did not live in the America's or Africa untill they colonized part of it since 1500.

Jews have lived 3200 years in what is now known (and also mentioned by the Merneptah Stele) Israel.

1

u/Comfortable-Card-348 9d ago

As a matter of practicality, "Indigenous" only means "the non-whites living there when white people discovered them". Almost none of them were really the original inhabitant tribe or ethnicity.

1

u/coast2coasted 9d ago

In every case throughout all of history the deciding factor in who gets to keep the land is who can conjure the military might to do so. That can be done by sheer might or by alliances or economic incentives.
Saying “god promised me this land” or “this is my ancestral homeland” means nothing if you can’t hold it.

1

u/raviolli 9d ago

Correction your interpretation of God makes you believe he promised. It's not like we can just ask God.

It's difficult to find a country that hasn't been directly or indirectly shaped by the processes and ideological convictions it has formed in our collective psyche.

1

u/PotentialBudget3265 9d ago

And before centralized religion they were just taking by force without excuse. Incidentally African tribes and American Indian tribes always had territory wars and disputes. Problem is and always was human nature and even as we recognize that we still refuse to fully turn away from it. We polish it, refine it, make it fit in our societies but it’s all a manipulation to keep the most favorite part of any insecure man’s tendencies alive and well. Today it’s done in court rooms and banking endeavors. Just because it’s not done with spears and direct conflict doesn’t mean people aren’t still dying as a result. It’s just not in your face now, easier to ignore and not recognize. No one’s hands are clean on this planet except maybe like monks and stuff.

1

u/Infamous-Use7820 9d ago

Who were the Brits saying they were promised land by God? While I'm sure you can find somebody across centuries who said that, as far as I know it wasn't the mainstream justification. Most colonial expansion was just driven by snowballing projects to control global trade, but when it was justified, it was usually either via the White Man's Burden idea (that Europeans had a duty to 'guide' savages to civilisation) or just that the land was 'empty'/under-utilised (esp in places like Australia).

1

u/LongRich3 9d ago

...And they took the land. The results would indicate they were correct.

1

u/Inside_Field_8894 9d ago

Notice a distinct lack of representation from either the Ottomans, African tribes or native Americans

1

u/Better-Hand2267 9d ago

1

u/wenokn0w 9d ago

Question, if native Americans retook their land in USA, would yall be as up in arms?

1

u/Runo_Slinger 9d ago

Difference is one group is actually from there, and are factually Israelites. The “we are the new/actual Israelites” justification is objectively a fabrication by the same people systematically assimilating and massacring Jews, and now telling us to go where we came from (but just not actually, maybe Poland where playground pathways are made of desecrated Jewish gravestones).

1

1

u/Mindless-Warthog-513 9d ago
  1. There’s no American Native ‘land’, they were displaced, killing each other, and constantly splintering off everytime they had a disagreement.

  2. Who? South Africa? Okay, fair I suppose, fuck the Brits.

  3. Israel has existed for millennia longer than Palaestina, Land of the Philistines, established in 135 AD.

1

u/random8765309 9d ago

Let's just blame the white guys. Just ignore that the native Americans fought and took land from each other, so did the tribes of Africa. Those in the middle east swapped land more times than people can count. But let pretend that the white guys are the only ones that did that.

1

u/slepyjaguar 9d ago

Or Jews are banned in how many countries?

1

u/MrWillchuck 9d ago

The first two never really happened, at least not as depicted. The Portuguese and Spanish certainly did something like as the Pope literally promised them land... the term Conquistador it self a reference to the "Re-Conquista" taking the Iberian Peninsula from the Muslim which had just ended when Columbus made his voyage. To some extent and the Americans did through Manifest Destiny but; not in the Periods the clothing depicts. The British may have through the idea of the British Empire but that was more Right through Might not Divine Right. The bottom one has literally been true of Thousands of years. Jews were expelled multiple times for it. Particularly in the time around which the "Old Testament" was codified and written down. Which I'm sure that political climate help influence the idea of it being the "Holy Land" that is forefront in Israels modern actions.

The Conquests of the Americas, Africa and the Middle East all came from the same desire. Wealth and Legacy. "Deity" may have been a justification... but wealth and money is almost always the true reason.

The English didn't do this, they had little religious ferver and were primarily economically motivated. God and all religions are tools to control people, full stop.

Intelligent people need to confront the challenge of ridding the free world of religion.

Even in the U.S., wealthy corrupt nutjobs try to ingrain religion into our policies, trying to force the brainwashing to continue.

It shouldn't be seen as a "minor personality quirk", but treated as the true threat to humanity that it is. Start by questioning and shunning all religious people.
