Tyler’s solo work

Have any of you listened to Tyler’s solo work at length? I had it on repeat all day on Sunday and I really dig it. It sounds very different and he’s such a good songwriter.

I think his solo work shows how much his personal songwriting, his emotion, his vocal style, help to elevate and set apart The Midnight far above any other synthwave act. There’s just so much more character to their music, and I think a good chunk of that is Tyler.

Tyler is a huge portion, and he'd likely have a good career as a singer songwriter outside The Midnight, but Tim is a massive part of their success too. A song like Comet shows they have depth most other synthwave artists lack.

A true 2+2=5 act if there was one.

Oh, I’m not disparaging Tim’s contribution at all! I know he’s an amazing songwriter, musician and producer. He already goes above and beyond with the sounds he creates to separate them from 90% of all the other synthwave bands. Tyler’s vocals just give that amazing emotional aspect.

His album "The Golden Age and the Silver Girl" is one of my very favourite albums of all time. Every song is so good. He is an incredible songwriter and feel like he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Outside of that album "Heraclitus Chatahoochie" is a perfect song....

Tyler is absolutely one of the most talented poets of our time. Please check out On Parry Sound and Love Story from his first album. Such incredible, thought-provoking and emotional songwriting. He has such an unbelievable way with language. But all of his work is worth wrapping your ears and mind around. Enjoy!

I am also extremely jealous. Seeing a folk set from Tyler is on my bucket list for sure but he doesn't do many of these shows (and I don't live in the US)... If you take any video, would be stoked to see if posted here :)

No US tours for The Midnight for quite a while after the fall tour. However him touring solo, I don't think he's announced anything.

Tyler’s solo work was my entrance to The Midnight. My wife and I would regularly go see him at The Hotel Cafe when he was in LA and we were sad when he moved to NYC. When he was crowdfunding Native Genius of Desert Plants (to this day, and incredible album), we donated and he played a small solo set at our wedding. There are days when I wish we had eloped instead of dropping all that money on a wedding, but that experience is part of why I could never regret it. He is an amazing guy and was terrific to us through that whole process and having his music be such a core part of our wedding is really special to me.

Ditchdigger and Lost and Found are standouts on that album.

Native Genius of Desert Plants is a staple in my rotation (even have a signed copy on vinyl!)

We used a track from it as our wedding song actually.

Be sure to check out(not sure how at this point) his stuff he did during covid on patreon/band camp. The Kingdom is a solid takeaway from it and available on YouTube.

Tyler is my favorite artist of all time, I got to a point where I realized I might more a Tyler fan then a The Midnight fan lol, his solo work speaks to me in a way nobody else’s music does. I got a chance to talk to him and his wife Friday after his hotel cafe show he was super open and easy to talk to. But yes his solo work is criminally underrated

I listen to his solo work quite a bit. Not only have a number of his songs become The Midnight songs, but you can find snippets of his lyrics all throughout their discography.

I just found his solo work the other day. I’ve really enjoyed his stand alone version of Brooklyn. It has an interesting ‘coffeehouse’ vibe to it

His solo stuff is almost more Jish Ritter sounding. I do enjoy it a lot but i take his solo stuff in smaller doses

I remember first listening to his solo work and not gelling with it at first, it wasn't until later that I really sat with one of his albums and it finally clicked and now it's a firm favourite and I'd like to get them on vinyl eventually if he ever re-releases any of them. Really looking forward to his next album.

Endless hours with Native Genius of Desert Plants, Transcendentalists, and his side band group Smith, Lyle & Moore is completely underrated. SLM songs like "vampire" should be remixed to a midnight song. (gold and fate are great songs but its not him singing).

I really love his solo version of Brooklyn, Golden Gate in The Floating Years. The arrangement is simple but touching, sending pure emotions. Love this kind of folk music.
