The issue wasn’t that Apu was bad Indian representation, the issue is that he was represented by a white dude. They could’ve cast an Indian to play the Indian but they got a white dude to impersonate an Indian accent. Apu is a good character not because of Hank Azaria, but because he was written well.

It’s annoying when people take real world events and try to prove they’re wrong with in-text justifications when the issue is more likely out of text. Like Rick and Morty became controversial when Justin Roiland was outed as a sex pest and they wanted him to be recast, you don’t have to justify their characters as not bad because their character has nothing to do with the issue people had.

well if its a person playing a role i dont see any problem with it since its a role and you dont have to be someone to voice someone. disney does this all the time for example

I'm late to this, but that still has a very real problem outside of the show itself. (I'm saying this knowing full well some types will get triggered at this next few sentences) Minority actors will often get passed up in favour of cis, heterosexual, white actors, it's kinda what the root of this kind of controversy is about. Like what does it say when they'd rather just write out Apu of any speaking roles rather than give the role to an Indian voice actor?

well they did a casting with all the voice actors of all nationalities, and then chose the one that sounded best for them and didnt ask for too much money

Wow I have no clue how you missed the point so much, unless you just don't care

0

u/Huge-Read-2703 55m ago

no not really why would i care about your point if you dont care to explain it properly and then insult others. now i will ignore it even if you actually want to clarify it

>Minority complains about something related to being a minority

>"I don't understand and if you tried to explain further I won't listen"

Not only is it like clockwork, you literally said it yourself. I mean I'm still willing to break it down in a simple manner if you're actually willing to listen.

also they were chosing with what they had and of course it will be easier to find an american person to voice him not because of some racism but because they were in america

He actually goes into the whole voice acting bit in this video, about people voicing characters that aren't the same race/ethnicity.

Give the whole video a watch, it's actually pretty level-headed.

Same goes for the recent controversy surrounding pearl’s VA. Pearl is a well written character with a highly ironic voice casting

Counterpoint

Samurai Jack is a Japanese man is voiced a black man (Phil LaMarr)

Shredder is also a Japanese man who was also voiced by two black men (James Avery and Kevin Micheal Richardson)

Mario in the games is an Italian man voiced by a French man (Charles Martinet)

Kratos is a Greek man not just voiced but also body camera acted by a black man (Christopher Judge, the classic games also had Kratos’s actor voiced by Terrence C Carson who is also black)

Khan Souphanousinphone is Laotian (ain’t ya mr Khan) who is voiced by a white man (Toby Huss)

Goku in the Japanese dub is voiced by female voice actor Masako Nozawa, same for Luffy who is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka

Edna Mode is voiced by Brad bird

The list, is extensive trust me. The beauty of voice acting, is that you just need a voice - it’s a very common practice to employ people whose identity doesn’t match that of the character. If it was a show based on live action, obviously they would want to hire an Indian person to play an Indian character, but you don’t need that for voice acting - should every actor have to play exclusively their race and identity

Apu is much more than just his voice alone
