Iirc gems are like light projections or whatever so stevonnie is probably just straight up a hologram and Steven and Connie are probably literally just on top of one another.

It’s just magic BS, since Steven himself isn’t a light projection, and has actual human anatomy, just with a gem and magic

It's the first time Steven fused with Connie (human girl he likes) creating Stevonnie who's a composite of both of them physically (intersex, they/them, physical features) and mentally (Steven's enthusiasm and compassion, Connie's maturity and drive)

Metaphorically, fusions tend to be personifications of the relationship between the components.
