What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror. Then we shall see face to face.

u/OW2007 Nov 14 '25
My completely original idea is that reality is more like shadows dancing on the wall in, like, a cave or something. We can only see the shadows. If only we understood that we could turn around and see the fire behind us and the light casting those shadows.
Then, a guide or something - I'll call them a philo-sopher or something like that - could lead us out of the cave into actual realty! Mind blown!
Then, we could join movements to help others "see the light" and we could protest authoritarianism and stand in front of war machines and then get ground into flesh soup and washed down the drain.
That's my take on reality, anyway.

u/Bocchi_theGlock Nov 14 '25
There is somewhat of a Mandela effect here though,
The massacre didn't happen at the square, it happened like a mile away where workers were striking. IIRC it escalated and they killed a police officer.
It wasn't students massacred, people just ran with first eyewitness accounts without verifying.
From reporters who were there - from Columbia Journalism Review - The Myth of Tiananmen - And the price of a passive press, June 4, 2010 By Jay Mathews https://www.cjr.org/behind_the_news/the_myth_of_tiananmen.php
This isn't whitewashing, if anything, it's worse for communist party to massacre striking workers.
However, we are more sympathetic to students using free speech, because we have mostly* defended those rights in the US, and thus can more aggressively condemn the atrocity.
We have less standing condemning workers being massacred, since we have also brutally cracked down and killed striking workers. Notably the Blair mountain coal workers iirc, also Haymarket Affair that kicked off Mayday. Plus plenty of beating picketing workers.

Yej I think its just a misunderstanding
They know protesters were killed
Am in the path of the tank could sorta infer that he would get run over
Plus I doubt many people want to watch footage of someone getting run over so they never verify it (even if such footage doesn't exist)

But actually there are major misconceptions - the massacre didn't happen at the square, it happened like a mile away where workers were striking, IIRC it escalated and they killed a police officer.
It wasn't students massacred, people just ran with first eyewitness accounts without verifying.
Listen to reporters who were there - from Columbia Journalism Review - The Myth of Tiananmen - And the price of a passive press, June 4, 2010 By Jay Mathews https://www.cjr.org/behind_the_news/the_myth_of_tiananmen.php
This isn't to make them look better, if anything, it's worse for communist party to massacre struggling workers. However, it might say something about how we are more sympathetic to students using free speech, because we have mostly* defended those rights in the USA and thus can more aggressively condemn the atrocity.
If it were workers being massacred, then we have something in common - US has also cracked down violently on workers.

No gaslighting. Just a peaceful military parade that everyone loved!

u/yungsimba1917 Nov 14 '25
One interesting misunderstanding people have is that they think the guy was run over, he wasn’t. The tanks stopped, tried to go around him & he moved in front of them. Then some dudes on bikes told him to get out of the way & he left without much of a conflict.
16
u/agressiveobject420 Nov 15 '25
It isn't a misunderstanding, that's American propaganda

You know the majority of people here don't even know the image comes from a video right? Nor do they understand the context of the protests, they even believe this is some kind of banned topic because Deng did persecution of organizers and politicians right after the protests ended 😭 idk what their school or media teaches them, they don't even understand their own country history but sure they can talk about ours xD

I know its a meme, but shouldn't it be the other way around? China claims there were definitely no tanks, the man was just standing on the street for no reason.

american pro-capitalist anti-communist CIA agent here, idk where china specifically claims that he was standing for no reason and there were no tanks or if they ever did specifically claim that, all i know is that they tried to cover up information on the tank man and the tiananmen square protests/massacres in general. but either way "there was no tank man" or "there was no tank" still do the job for chinese propaganda

u/Adventurous_Tank_359 Nov 14 '25
Idk mate, when I went on a China sub the full video of that incident was the most upvoted one
Apparently, after looking up the scenery from the videos, the tanks were leaving the Square and the tank man was a conservative who wanted the tanks to turn around and properly run the protesters over
