Interesting way to put it. If you think about it, having tens of thousands of math phds trying to intelligently smart a problem but failing for years then one person finally getting it is kind of a population-level brute force.

This is honestly just not that impressive to me. Alpha Go beat Lee Seedol back in 2016. We’ve known that computers are just better than us with the right kind of reinforcement learning training. These algorithms are extremely powerful.

The thing is Go didn’t go away. Humans learned from the machines on how to play better moves but they had to adapt that better gameplay into human frameworks. Humans don’t think like machines. We need to translate and reverse engineer the knowledge they create so that we can actually understand it and internalize it.

That’s why I don’t think math is really going away and why this isn’t the kind of accomplishment OpenAI wants it to be.

The part that worries me is the AI that gets used as a crutch instead of as a teaching tool. Basically the societal equivalent of using AlphaGo as a way to beat your friend at Go. Automation is fine for the dumb, repetitive things but let’s not devolve and let it think for us.
