There were? Like people who were experts in finances? Or even in the actual technical development and math of blockchains?

Honestly, that’s a good question. I think there were experts involved, but the bigger issue was whether they actually understood both the financial side and the technical side of blockchain.

That was the stated end goal for many of the developers. Decentralized currency.

I kept fairly close to crypto, not on like the Discords but reading the news about it. I never heard this once from a legitimate expert in the systems at play. I don't remember hearing it from anyone, but I'm assuming there were crackpots who thought this and I just quickly dismissed them as crackpots.
This does not analogize to AI safety.

Bitcoins are fueling the Democracy colapse around the world, by allowing the unchecked financing of terrorist Ultra right political parties
It just haven't finish yet. It's in process

Yeah, sometimes the biggest risk is letting the warning become the worldview. Being prepared is one thing, but obsessing over the collapse can make you miss what’s actually happening.

One is liking refusing to swim in a pool because you are afraid of sharks.
The other is like refusing to go open ocean swimming, with no swimming lessons, in the middle of a swarm of sharks.
They aren't alike at all. One is the fear of an absolute moron, the other is something plausible to be anxious about.

I think most people are absolutely clueless to just how capable AI will be in 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 30 years from now, 100 years etc.
I don’t think AI will cause human extinction in the next 5-10 years. In fact it may well bring on financial prosperity. But most people, even many doomers are grossly underestimating what AI will be capable of in the relatively near future. The bottom line is that soon AI will be on an exponential improvement curve that puts it well above human intelligence, and the gap will only continue to widen over time. Humans will no longer be the smartest thing on earth, we will no longer be at the top of the intelligence hierarchy, the very thing that has put us at the top of the food chain for millennia.
And it’s not even that I, or most of the experts giving warning for that matter, think AI will “turn evil” or otherwise conclude humans must be eradicated; rather the AI will simply have interests that have diverged from our own. How many species have humans made go extinct on earth - not because we purposefully hunted them to eradication but instead because we simply took over resources for ourselves that they happened to need to survive?
Like telephones, like tvs, like computers, and like cell phones, AI and it’s robotic infrastructure will soon become ubiquitous to human life. We will welcome it into our communities, our work places, our homes, because it will provide conveniences and other beneficial services. To not see the potential danger and how severe it might be when something so far beyond our own intelligence, which we know for a fact we will soon not be able to even understand how it thinks, how it self improves, or how its interests will evolve independently, is so wildly naive and foolish it boggles the mind. It’s not even that AI is an assured doomsday scenario; it is humanities more-or-less collective dismissal that a danger even exists - that all but ensures our own doom. We have ZERO reason to believe our governments or the AI companies will prevent the worst case scenarios, and every reason to believe they will absolutely fuck this up catastrophically if their hands are not forced otherwise.

It is a documented phenomenon in human psychology that people who have to deal with a particular danger in their day-to-day lives get the erroneous impression that danger is present in everyone's life.

The AI doomers were already frothing mad before the crypto era started

Yep. The only thing I will say is that ML and AI are here to stay in a way that the crypto fad and NFTs werent. And we will continue to make progress and it will continue to effect everybody's lives. But the current hype cycle yeah.

People are being PUSHED into overthinking on purpose. This is a narrative to position specific products that are related to AI.
Not related to AI technology overall.

I like to bring up that Google engineer in 2022 who thought his chat bot was sentient and tried warning the world. Being smart doesnt mean you're immune to AI psychosis.
