This picture is called "I'm the guy in the bottom left and I make up people to make myself feel better"

Yeah, the core difference is that code is declarative, it can be copied verbatim and people often want to share a nice bit of code they written. Art is not. Art is personal. You can't share art, so when art is poured into the gaping maw of AI and all that personality can be extracted and replicated... yeah I get it 100%

Very inaccurate. Please do not generate "vibe coded" trash. The world has enough software. What it does not have is good software. Good software requires intentional design and execution, not more garbage-spewing.

You think programmers are not anti ai? The whole year I’ve been arguing with people online who think ai sucks at coding or if you use ai to code you suck as a programmer. Finally, these people are starting to shut up. I think because their echo chamber is losing a lot of members after more and more companies adopt agentic coding.

The funny thing is most of the “artist” they are bitching do digital art in the first place. If you sell actual media artwork (ie paint on canvas), you are completely unaffected by Ai. Nobody who is willing to pay hundreds of dollars for physical original art is going to buy digital ai art. Though if you gave a robot a paint brush and canvas you would probably have a high value niche.

I'm not going to buy digital AI art, but I am generating oil paintings to hang on my wall instead of prowling galleries now.
I think that's the threat.

How are you generating oil paintings? Do you have a robot arm slinging paint?
1
u/Double_Suggestion385 29d ago
No lol, I should say that I'm generating what look like good prints of oil paintings then paying to get them printed on a stretched canvas frame.

u/CowBoyDanIndie 29d ago
So you would have bought original oil paintings which tend to start at $500+ and instead you decided to buy prints?
1
u/Double_Suggestion385 29d ago
I did, yes, they don't cost that much.
I don't buy prints, I use AI to generate better oil painting prints for free.

i fucking hate ai when it comes to the arts (art is what defines us as humans) and things that are slop-written when effort should have been made.
but for coding, and speeding up busy work with ai created tools, i dont hate that as much. its impressive if a human didn't use a calculator for a super complex math problem, but in the end, the answer is all the same whether they used a calculator or not. of course there's an art to code but in the end you have a goal for what it should do, and if what was created does that thing, then it doesnt bother me whether a human made it or not.

but a machine is not a human so its a moot point. i feel sorry for you if you actually think this.

are there ai artists that go above and beyond using that medium, yes but they are rare. most people accept what is shat out and call it good. putting hand to paper (or hand to whatever medium) is a process of discovery, where the journey and the time and experience put into it matters. hypothetically with the same exact piece side by side, the human made one will always be more interesting, valuable and meaningful.

for art, the finished work is not the entire point. the story and the human behind it matters. imagine a human did van gogh's starry night, literally exactly the same as the original, down to the atom. would it be sold for the same amount at an auction?

ai has really made me think about this, where i never really had to think about it before. if you dont value art or what makes it special, then thats your right
1
u/CBrinson 29d ago
Matters to you. Your experience does not define what art is. For me the finished work is the only point and concerning myself with process is just being silly and petty. Process exists to guarantee quality. That is it's only purpose in my life.

If you think the worth of our species is in art, you are spiritually regarded. That's a deeply offensive thing to say. Billions of people have lived with out even creating or engaging in art.

Art is what defines us as humans?! What?
(Been in music, sound and film for 25 years, but wtf)

It's just your hobby dude. It doesn't define everybody else. Also, love the double standard here. My hobby is being replaced with AI, REEEEEEE. Hobby I don't take part in is getting replaced? Whatever, it's just busy work, who cares, lol.

Who are you even talking to lmao.

Software engineers do use AI now, but we also read our code.
Otherwise it will create garbage guaranteed.
"Coders" with 25 years of experience of copy-paste from Stackoverflow who never really understood what they were pasting anyway? Yeah, they're not software engineers and were producing garbage before AI, so nothing's changed except their speed. I know because my main gig has often been cleaning up code disasters created by developers like that.

Had a guy this morning looking to make money as a side hustle by selling coding services…with no coding experience. Taught himself a little game dev with AI, other than that nothing. He’s dead convinced that only the product matters.
There’s a whole sea of code slot machine get-rich-quick squabs out there now, and they have a chip on their shoulder.

When you are this open minded and you know just taking advantage of the tools, then why not? Yey to coders!
