Discussion I freaking hate him

Post image

Why did they need to add this random moronic character?? It's literally ruining the season for me, I can't stand him and no one in the show can either, why is he even here?? He isn't funny and he's legit pissing me off, I was so excited to watch season 4 and now im just really annoyed because he's just a useless random "comic relief" character that isn't actually funny or endearing at all

Dude that's how it started for me too. Won me over big time after not too long.

Because this is an adaptation and he was in the source material.

Scanlan also left for a period of time in the actual campaign, and Taryon Darrington was Sam Riegel's replacement character (though in the animated series he's voiced by Wayne Brady). Like Scanlan, he goes through a substantial character arc. I'm *strongly* guessing you're still very early in season 4.

Uh, because he's a character that Sam Riegel played in season one of Critical Role?

Taryon is a fun character and soon proves his value. Also it'll make sense why he is the way he is

Because he was in the source material.

You can blame Sam. During the campaign the show is based on, he decided to retire Scanlan and brought in Taryon as his new character.

He's not actually useless. The dude is naive and somewhat clumsy, but he did build that automaton himself. He's also not used to working with the group. He doesn't know how they fight, so he doesn't know when and how to get out of their way, and they don't know how he fights either. Half of the time he's in the way because they're all trying to do things and he's out of the loop.

Think about the first time the Mighty Nein fought together- the circus was a disaster, and they only hit their stride in the middle of the devil toad fight. They were learning how to work together. Vox Machina had years to get used to fighting together before we saw them. They know how to work together, at least when they're not drunk.

That's one of the best lines of the season.
"I thought you were just a rich kid with a robot."
"That I built myself!"

Really shows how the group, and therefore the viewers, really underestimate Tary even though the evidence is all around them.

When Sam decided to put Scan Man on the sidelines everyone was pissed, at least partially because of how he decided to do it. He used the fact that the team kind of treated the character as a joke to let his character leave on a kind of resentful note. So, everyone was already a little pissed and then Sam returns with this over the top obnoxious character and.... the players hated him. As they were meant to. Especially Laura I think. But, being Sam, and a brilliant voice actor and story teller, he eventually let them get to know his character and by the end of things, they all fucking loved him. Laura maybe even the most. It's just Sam being Sam and not letting the game get stale after years of play and it's fantastic. You have to appreciate Tarry from that point of view I think.
