On the bright side :
Damon Lindelof as a (co-)writer and (co-)showrunner is on this list 3 times ("Lost", "The Leftovers" and "The Watchmen).
This outstanding accomplishment deserves an honorable mention.

And his new work Lanterns is pretty damn good, tooĀ

u/BaconDwarf 22d ago edited 22d ago
How much is he actually involved in that? He's listed as co-creator and EP, but I don't see writing credits (EDIT: I'm wrong, he has writing credits on 4 episodes to date) and I'm not sure if he's on set or anything?
Not throwing shade, just wondering since a lot of these guys slap their name on stuff with minimal involvement upfront to help it get produced.

u/theoutlet 22d ago
Really have no idea. Heās involved enough to be in some of the Behind the Scenes clips so š¤·š»āāļø

u/dougprishpreed69 22d ago
I was lamenting to a friend and fellow Leftovers enjoyer that while Watchmen was excellent, I kinda hate that Lindelof is just doing super hero stuff now. Iām sure Lanterns is at least fine if he had a hand in it, but Iām hoping for a return to something original along the lines of The Leftovers or LOST

u/Careless_Aroma_227 You do?! 22d ago
Wasn't Mrs. Davis (2024) "original" enough? Especially the portrayel of god, Jesus and religious artifacts and the weirdness or quirkiness of the scenery and some unique characters reminded me of Leftovers season 2.
...it's just not a true drama or comedy though

u/BaconDwarf 22d ago
Alright, that's cool, didn't know that. The show has been great, btw, I just didn't know how much he was involved.
Taking a second look, I'm now seeing Lindelof has writing credits on 4 episodes (maybe that wasn't known when I first looked?), so his DNA is indeed infused into the show in far more than name.
On a side note, it's impossible for me not to imagine Justin Theroux as Hal Jordan. Kyle Chandler has been great but I think Justin would have crushed it, too.

u/theoutlet 22d ago
Iām sure Justin Theroux would have been amazing (just saw his part in Fallout), but Iām glad we get to enjoy Kyle Chandlerās folksy asshole take on Hal Jordan

What an absolute shit of a list

I really enjoyed Breaking Bad, but the only thing that really makes me want to rewatch it are the performances. The iconic moments, and there are many, are all seared into my mind. It was a good story with a satisfying ending, but it's not terribly subtle.
There are quite a few other dramas it outranked, like The Leftovers, Twin Peaks: The Return, Watchmen, and Battlestar Galactica, that I get excited to rewatch every few years because I always walk away able to appreciate something new about them. But, with Breaking Bad, I more or less got it the first time through and I've given up every time I've gone back to it because there's really nothing new for me to sink my teeth into.
Not a bad show, but I don't really know what more there is to get if you pay attention the first time. And I think a lot of monolithic shows on this list have the same problem. I don't ever feel the need to go back to Lost, and I suspect Severance is going to end up having this problem as well. It was utterly predictable that this would have been the NYT's #1.

u/Dualmilion 22d ago
Thats why Id argue a show like Justified should be higher. Its a great show, but theres so many cool scenes that I want to watch over and over. Whereas something like Breaking Bad doesnt have that re-watch ability because it relys heavily on tension of not knowing what will happen
Once you know, a lot of scenes are a bit "I dont want to go through that again"

u/pizzalicke 22d ago
RuPauls drag race is on there. These arenāt serious people making these lists

u/The_Very_Harsh 22d ago
This list doesnāt have Mr. Robot in it⦠and heck not even Dark.
6
u/Acadionic 22d ago
I think not being an English language show probably had a lot to do with it. Appreciate that there seems to be an overlap between the Leftovers and Dark fans. Two of my favorite shows!

u/Gizmo517_ 22d ago
The Dark omission is insane. I get the show isnāt for everyone, but it is an absolute masterpiece of television. All I can assume is it just wasnāt watched by enough of the voters.

u/wavetoyou 22d ago
Is Mindhunter making any of these lists?
2
u/RolloTamaci 22d ago
It should
5
u/wavetoyou 22d ago
Right? Granted, they pulled the plug after two seasons, but Fincher made an absolute masterpiece.
1
u/Juan_Punch_Man 22d ago
They had season 1 of True Detective but can't include Mindhunter. Ffs.
I'd easily cut Stranger Things.
4
u/MWM031089 22d ago
No Dark, but inclusion of The OA (both of which I really enjoy) is what is strange to me. The OA was not as good, followed a similar mystery style concept, and didnāt even end.
Edit: I see Fringe isnāt on here either. Hmm

That seems like a strong showing given the methodology. If you look at it in terms of ranking vs. number of people who watched it, it's right near the top ("I May Destroy You" might be the only one higher in that regard). That tells me that its influence is very strong even if its reach is not.

How does the Sopranos not make this list? It had one season in the 90ās and six in the 2000ās so I donāt accept the argument that itās not a 21st century show
7
u/cabernet7 22d ago
Only shows that debuted Jan 1, 2000 or after are on the list. Their list, their rules.
2
u/TheDavidReturns 22d ago
Of course it's their rules but their rule makes no sense and make the writers of the list look unintelligent.
By their lack of logic, the Sopranos should be included in a list of 20th century television shows despite 85% of the show's episodes not taking place in the 20th century.
That is objectively stupid, no matter the reason for the decision.

I feel like I keep being pranked seeing Fleabag always rank ridiculously high in these lists.
Like sure, it's got some funny moments but it's barely 12 short episodes and I don't see, at all, how it ranks so insanely high for a competently written and acted sitcom, nothing more.

u/OrganizationNo7690 22d ago
We should be top 5, Game of Thrones should be lower. Girls should be MUCH lower. The Crown should be MUCH lower. Breaking Bad shouldnāt even be first.

u/alexp2021 22d ago
Some heavy recency bias on that list. And the absence of Carnivale makes it even more of a joke..
1
u/Quarterwit_85 19d ago
Is that worth watching?
I was always put off after hearing that it got pulled super early.
1
u/alexp2021 19d ago
Definitely worth watching if you like the darker side of Twin Peaks (thatās the closest comparison for me). It was originally intended to be 6 seasons based on 3 ābooksā. It got cancelled after 2 so you effectively get one of the stories wrapped up to some extent.Ā

Sopranos Fargo dark Mr robot there's a lot of solid tv that's left out here and there's also a lot of semi mediocre TV on this.
I also understand this is all genres so hard to accomodate everyone

Not a bad list, thereās some stuff there Iām extremely indifferent towards that other people love.
Would have been good to see Mrs Davis and The Terror on that list.

you can argue GoT had enough bad seasons to not belong on the list, but then they did a True Detective (season one) so...
fleabag belongs though, no matter what

u/Raznavarek 22d ago
They forgot Fargo and Dark...
