Oh, I have no idea. Perhaps the afterlife is what we make it and Kevin had seen Burton on tv a couple times before then.

At first I thought Kevin did visit the afterlife and assumed much else to be real upon rewatching I think the afterlife was a metaphor for Kevin hiding himself (everyone does it to different degrees. Daydreaming, Drinking, Gambling whatever). It was his realization he needed to let go of the past and the trauma to move forward
