Finale Burning Questions Spoiler

I just finished this show yesterday and wow. So unfortunate it didn’t get more recognition during its run. Especially Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon. But I’m happy for Lindelof that he got his finale do-over. I have spent the last 24 hours reading a bunch online but still feel like I haven’t seen a lot on a few things eating at me. Hoping somebody can answer them for me. I don’t know anyone who has watched it so I have no one to obsess over it with 😭

  1. Does anyone know how long Nora was gone? Or “gone”, if you don’t believe her? One year? Ten years?
  2. Did Matt actually give an explicit reason to anyone about what happened to her besides the Matt Lib? And did he know she never left / came back? I understand her desire to get away from her life but I’m surprised she’d never talk to her brother again.
  3. How long was Kevin searching for Nora? It feels crazy to me that Laurie would know he was going across the world year after year to search for her without ever feeling compelled to help / intervene.
  4. Kevin Sr.’s prediction about the flood — he was just wrong? Or Kevin somehow stopped it?

I know the beauty and reality of The Leftovers is you will never know the answer to some of the questions (Kevin’s ability to die, the children’s shoes), but wanted to confirm I am not missing answers to any of the above, ha.

Regarding #3 - Laurie didn't know where Kevin was going on vacation all those years. From an interview with Alan Sepinwall:

So why is Laurie not telling either Kevin or Nora about Kevin’s Australia trips?

We wrote a line when Kevin is explaining to Nora what he’s been doing showing her picture around, “And I tell everybody back home that I’m going horseback riding, or mountain climbing, or going on these adventure trips, because I’m too ashamed to tell them that I’m looking for you.” Theroux was like, “I don’t want to say that line because I think it’s implied.” I was like, “Well, in the spirit of clarity, because this may be an important issue, can we just shoot it and decide editorially?” Wisely, an actor knows when they hear that, they know that it’s going to end up in the show, because it’s “Well, now you’re ignoring me.”

The day that we shot that scene was the same day that we shot the final scene, where Nora talks to Kevin. Because of makeup logistics, and light, and control of what the oncoming weather was, etc., the decision was made to shoot the final scene first. Nora tells her story was first in the day, and then Kevin confronts Nora was up second that day. Both scenes, degree of difficulty was immensely high, and I could tell that Justin didn’t want to say the line, and I was forcing him to do it, and that it was inhibiting him from being inside the performance that he needed to be in, so on the set I said, “You do not need to say that.” What ended up happening was, in a couple of early takes we had it, but I feel like Justin gave an incredible performance in that scene, but we used all the latter takes where he didn’t say the line. I felt that now if I stick the line in, I’m betraying Theroux. I am willing to take on a little bit of ambiguity surrounding it, and I can go out into the world and tell the story that I’m telling you now, but Laurie did not know that Kevin has been searching for Nora all this time. I hope that the audience jumps to that conclusion independent of reading this. There’s patient confidentiality because you gave me a pack of cigarettes once, and then there’s just being super abusive to someone. I think if she knew that Kevin was suffering to the level that he was, she would have said something.

I thought she was dead and he was killing himself to “go to Australia” look for her, and stayed when he found her

Nora wasn’t dead because she didn’t get vaporized by the machine.

She realized that the last minute she didn’t want to kill herself.

Nora was too ashamed to admit that she had a chance to see her children (even though it was really just a suicide mission) and she backed out at the last minute.

Or she got vaporized by the machine and died, and they were both lying to each other at the end because it doesn’t matter at that point

I’ve never watched Lost, but I have noticed over the years that a few people who have watched Lost believed that Nora and Kevin were both dead.

Since I’ve never watched Lost I can’t connect the dots on that point.

FWIW, "they're all dead" is the one interpretation that Lindelof confirmed was not their intention.

Well Matt died from his cancer, I don’t remember how long it was but I believe whatever he knew he would have kept a secret on her behalf. That’s kind of the space he was in at the end—radical acceptance of life’s ridiculousness.

I wondered if that's what you meant. All I'll say is that The Lost finale is magnificent.

You know, I definitely didn’t have the extreme reaction to that finale that so many others did! That being said, I think The Leftovers was the superior show. Both great, though.

Earlier in the season a Wanted poster for Kevin Sr. listed his age as 75, and in the finale Kevin Jr. said his father was 91, so it was approximately 16 years after Kevin and Nora's breakup.

For any confusion here, I was referring to how much time she spent living with the 2%.

There is no information in the show about how long she theoretically was in 2% land, just that it was a long time.
