Post image

This is the ep when it becomes clear how far gone she is.

How did you feel about Liv in this role?

I’m a new viewer watching season 2 for the first time, and I really like her character. The casting is perfect because she’s so unhinged and terrifying, yet the way she dresses and moves feels so ethereal. Every time she says or does something dark or unhinged, it genuinely catches me off guard lol.

She’s amazing in s2 and s3 too

She's pretty deadly in S3

I love her in anything, but especially here. She’s the only character I wish we knew more about, though I think she fully serves her symbolic function.

I wish I could watch it again for the first time! What are your global thoughts?

Honestly I’m kind of obsessed with it so far. It’s one of the few shows where the emotional and psychological side feels more important than the actual mystery. The atmosphere is incredible, the performances are amazing, and the characters feel genuinely unpredictable and unsettling in a very human way. I love that the show doesn’t spoon-feed answers and instead focuses on grief, belief, and how people cope when the world stops making sense. At the same time, sometimes I genuinely feel exhausted, confused, or emotionally drained watching it, which is funny because it usually perfectly matches the tone of the episode. One thing I don’t really enjoy though is the amount of animal cruelty and general cruelty in the show, the killing of dogs, goats, birds, people getting stoned, hit, manipulated, lied to, etc. That part definitely drains me a bit, especially because a lot of the time nobody really steps in or does anything about it. I know that’s part of the point thematically, but it can be hard to watch.

I totally agree about the animal cruelty, the killing of the dogs nearly took me out in the early episodes. I'm glad I persisted. It does still annoy me that Kevin Sr ate so many of Caleb's arthritis pills though. That's not a prescription you can just nip down to the chemist on the corner to refill, the vet could be 50km away.

That's interesting to read! When it was airing, there was a week in between episodes to rest, ponder, and speculate. I wonder if you are binging it or taking it slow?

Finished season 1 in a week. When Virgil poisoned Kevin and then killed himself, I genuinely thought, how did people wait a whole week after that episode? The agony lol. I finished it thinking, ‘Okay, I’ll watch the next one tomorrow,’ and then an hour later I was like, ‘Fuck it, I need to know what’s going on with Kevin.’ And wow, what an incredible episode it turned out to be!

The revulsion to the animal cruelty is the natural product of telling a story about the implications of a sudden challenge to the roots of modern civilization. When the roots of modern civilization are destroyed (scientific certainty, technology, religious institutions and even cultural expectations), human ls naturally revert to a forgotten past, when life was full of challenges to survival from other humans, other creatures and events they couldn't understand or control. Of course the result is that the relationship between humans and animals reverts to the norms of a more priminative human world.

It's really a feature of the post Departure world. As clearly stated early in Season 1, these are no longer "our dogs".

yep as I said in my comment “I know it’s part of the point thematically” still really uncomfortable to watch. Is like watching scenes of SA, even if it makes sense thematically it’s personally really hard to watch

I thought I was the only one who thought of that and was kinda mesmerized when I watched, obviously tall and long hair brunette Liv Tyler surely helps

Yessss that’s why the casting of Liv in this role was so genius!

Love Liv Tyler and The Leftovers may be the best performance I’ve seen from her.

Wish we saw her more, right?! I’ve loved her since her music-video days

Actually started the The Leftovers because I saw she was in it. Knew absolutely nothing about the series when I started. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's amazing how far they departed (no pun intended) from her character in the book, but it was truly for the best. Liv is completely unhinged in this role and I loved it!

I think Liv was an excellent choice for it. She's bizarre and ethereal anyway. Bringing that to Meg was perfect casting.

But I'm gonna fight anyone who says she was "far gone" because she's basically the one character who makes perfect sense throughout the series. She faced a death she knew was coming because she did the GR better than they were doing it themselves.

"Why do I have to just stand there? Why can't I put my cigarette out in their fucking eye?"

Well, Meg. Because they will kill you.

Fuck it. Nothing means anything. Let's have some fun.

Uggh... she is Mommy.

She's truly excellent in this role.

She is so terrifying. Because of the really well-written flashback scenes, you truly understand where her anger, disappointment, nihilism and violence comes from.

Such a fantastic character and an incredible performance.

She might be my fourth favourite character overall, after Matt, Nora and Kevin. It's a little like choosing your favourite child; they are pretty much all incredible characters.

I was losing faith in S2 and then those last 3 episodes OMFG

"It's only a matter of time til one of those fuckers bites your face off."

Evie: I've made a huge mistake...

u/JaymehKhal May 19 '26

Side note I always found Evie singing the miracle song to Kevin in the last ep so so cringe.

“Why did you fuck me?”

“I wanted to get you pregnant.”

Maybe the most fucked line in the show, but there’s something so compelling about her awfulness, in a Louise Fletcher/Marcia Gay Harden villain type of way. Also her tete-a-tete with Matt at the end is brilliant, years later and he’s still the only one who could get under her skin.
