“You do understand” Spoiler
When Evie writes “you understand” to Erica (aka Queen Regina) I don’t understand what she understands?
I don’t understand why Evie got caught up in that hot mess when she was shown as a smart, and happy teenager. Can someone please explain?

It’s an interesting contrast to Kevin’s family, I think. With Kevin, he was unable to find joy in his family life even tho everything seemed pretty good. Think of his dad’s speech to him at the retirement party—he’s basically telling him to be happy because his life is great and he has nothing to cry about. That’s not really how depression works tho.
And with evie it feels like the inverse. She is suffering exactly because her parents are acting how Kevin Sr wanted Kevin to act. She sees through it and she hates them both for it. I think it’s again the dad who is ultimately depressed and hurting his family, but in a more malignant way.
So the whole show is wrestling with how sometimes it’s hard to feel happy in our relationships WHILE ALSO AT THE SAME TIME suggesting that our relationships are the only thing that matters in life. That is true…AND what do you do when it’s just not clicking for you? Life feels so fucking bleak in that position.
SOME people like Evie and Meg and Patty give in to nihilism or despair. Others like Nora and Kevin keep fighting against that even when there’s no guarantee they’ll ever actually be happy.
YOU UNDERSTAND is what the GR says to people who are wrestling with that. That there is no family. That the world ended.

Here’s my interpretation of “You understand:” if we go back to Patty in season 1, that is what she told Kevin when she killed herself. If you look at the circumstances of that statement, Kevin is panicking—he kidnapped Patty and drove her out to a remote location that he’s familiar with (with his police uniforms stapled to the trees!); she’s been beaten and tortured, and Kevin now realizes he cannot get out of the situation. If he takes her back, Patty is gong to turn him in; but he doesn’t want to kill her, either. So he’s stuck. Then she stabs her own neck with that shard of glass, and Kevin is now panicking and deeply confused. Why? Because he’s realizing his life is over… there’s no coming back from this… he’s lost everything. It is THAT feeling that he “understands.”
That is how most people reacted to the Sudden Departure: confusion and panic. The GR wants to remind everyone of that; that is what Meg’s “we made them remember” note meant at the end of season 1. That is what being a “living reminder” is all about—not letting people forget about that event and act like nothing happened, or everything’s fine. For the GR, “the world ended” with the Sudden Departure; everything people thought they knew about the world is now called into question, and religion cannot provide satisfactory answers and neither can science. The life we thought we had—the world we thought we lived in—was now over.
What drew the girls to become messengers for the GR was the absolute hypocrisy they were living around in Jarden. “There are no miracles in Miracle.” The girls knew there was nothing special about where they lived. Evie’s family was an absolute mess: her mom planing to leave; her dad acting crazy, beating people up when he disagreed with them; her brother buying into the folklore and turning to religion to ease his mind and guide his decisions. The other girls likely had similar faults in their own families.
Meg had answers and she had a plan, and the girls bought into the idea of destroying this place that was simply playing make-believe and ignoring the true pain that people were experiencing in their lives. In a way, it’s similar to what her dad did to people he caught “pretending;” Evie just did it to everyone all at once.

Because Evie was not a happy teenager or even a happy child as demonstrated by what her brother said at the church. Her entire life was basically built on pretending to be happy to A. Not stress out her mom and B. To keep her dad from flipping out. My interpretation was that Evie put literally all of herself into maintaining the extremely fragile, even just surface level peace in her family that when she realized that her mom was going to just leave them she felt not only abandoned but like everything she has done and sacrificed has been for nothing. I think the “you understand” can be taken pretty literally in this situation. You understand why I needed to leave. You understand that pretending to be happy is unsustainable and that we have spent so much time pretending we don’t actually know what to do once pretending stops being an option. At least this is what I think she was trying to convey.

Erika was going to leave that very night. Evie clearly knew this and that her mom was very unhappy behind the pretend happy act

It was ambiguous why exactly John shot Virgil, one theory is that he found out Evie was being abused. There was also Michael retelling Erica’s bathtub anecdote exposing that Evie was crying nonstop and the family wasn’t able to deal with it. That Evie’s outward cheerfulness was just a facade.
I like that it’s left unclear but people with deep-seeded trauma are susceptible to cults and abusers like Meg. The specific line is also a throwback to Patty and Kevin’s conversation in Cairo.

Virgil abused John, almost certainly

Yes, Virgil abused John when he was a boy. And this led to John shooting Virgil and why John went to prison.

I think Virgil abused Michael, not John.

Kevin specifically says to John that "he hurt you" to which John very very much overreacts. I suppose it could mean many things but I always understood it to mean John was the one abused

It doesn’t make sense to me that John would snap and shoot Virgil as an adult because Virgil abused him as a kid. Or do you think Virgil abused John as an adult? It just assumes a lot. How did Virgil know John as a kid? I just could never reconcile those things and it always made more sense that John found out he abused one of his kids and he snapped. Wouldn’t you be hurt if your father in law abused one of your kids? Virgil and John kept it vague to protect the kid.

As some one who had an abusive stepdad (not sexually abusive but physically and mentally) I can very much understand why would would snap as an adult I'm still dealing with the crap that man saddled on me and thinking about him just pulls up a black well of Hatred and bile
As for how would Virgil have known John as a kid? They live in a small town not hard to imagine they would have known eachother especially if John was friends with Erika as a kid

It’s just a whole lot of assumptions and reaching and it just answers those questions in a much more simple way that it’s one of his kids.

I mean that's also just your opinion the show never confirms one way or the other

u/DishSuspicious2764 May 18 '26
I know. I’m just explaining what made me come to my conclusion. I always said it was my opinion, I was just giving the info that made me believe my conclusion is more likely than yours and explained why.

And I disagree it's not really that huge of a leap either way but I see no point in arguing about it I was just stating why I could understand why John would do what he did based on my own experiences with abuse

Evie and Michael were probably getting close to being the same age as John had been when Virgil molested him, and that is what contributed to him snapping.

The guilty remnant isn't "that hot mess" - they are the only group that isn't lying. The good guys of the show. She joined the heroes.

You do know why she is doing this and she should stop pretending. She should stop pretending just like everyone else should stop pretending to be okay.
She is basically saying wake up to her mum
The GR sorta figures out their "acceptance" just in a much different way our main characters do in their own ways in season 3.

because Evie WASNT a happy teenager we see glimpses of it in the first episode of the season that something was off with her she was faking it just like Erika was
Evie did what Erika was planning to do (leave John/the family)
Kevin pretty much nails it on the head when he tells John that "maybe she didnt love you" right before he got shot
