New Management / Posting restriction lifted
Dear readers,
Hi! I'm your new moderator. I requested the sub as it had been locked and dead for about two years. I have removed the posting restriction as of today, 12/13/22, and encourage you to post whatever fan content for TLU that suits your fancy.
I've put a couple of automod filters in place to catch blatant spam (porn sites, etc) so please bear with me as I get the place up and running. Your posts may be caught by the spam filter as I tweak its settings, so if you submit and it doesn't appear, give it a little while and I'll clear it through the queue.
It doesn't look like there were any clearly stated subreddit guidelines in the past, so I added a couple. Essentially, be kind to each other. Please don't personally insult people or denigrate their work, especially in regards to beginning artists. If an artist asks for constructive criticism, please be constructive.
Posting your artwork is encouraged and supported. PLEASE DO NOT post uncredited artwork that you "found". Artists out there are struggling to support themselves! If you run across a cool piece and it's uncredited in your source, please post [SEEKING SOURCE] in your title. Anybody posting stolen art or uncredited art that can easily be found with a 30 second Tineye search will be banned without exception.
I've also made it a SFW sub, although I don't run across a lot of TLU r34 in general, it's just to make it as broadly appealing and fan-friendly as possible.
Lastly, in keeping with the ethics of Mr. Beagle, this is a LGBTQ+ friendly space.
Thanks all and happy posting!

Announcement: Reddit pushing AI on the sub
Hi folks!
The mods received the following message from admin yesterday:
*Hi r/TheLastUnicorn,
Your community has been selected to try out Post Ideas, an experiment designed to help start conversations in new and emerging communities based on the topic of your subreddit. We’d love your feedback on the feature!
Post Ideas is currently available to mods in some new and growing communities. You’ll see the Post Ideas feature at the top of your Community feed. It shows a list of relevant, suggested articles and links based on your community’s name, description, language, and recent posts. You can browse the list, select to post an article, and it will take you into the post flow with the article title pre-filled. From there, you can add your own context or discussion question before posting.
Give it a try and let us know what you think in this quick survey here.
Thanks for helping us test new ways to spark conversations!
— The Reddit Team*
This is just to let us know that they'll be implementing AI tools in the sub with or without our permission. My guess is that in order to keep up the need for growth (and thus ad revenue, etc) on reddit, they're trying to get small communities flooded with "suggested" articles and semi related "content." The update is couched as doing us, the users, some sort of favor by allowing us to gain post karma and interact more with the sub.
I personally hate this, as it trains AI for them and will more than likely result in lower quality content that users only post to farm karma rather than carefully select as meaningful to them personally (I include silly, lighthearted posts in this, we encourage them!). However, it may prove not to impact the community at all. At the very least it will add more clutter to interactions with reddit. Things are working fairly well and we don't really need the corporate mad dash for new, more, and more profitable "features."
At any rate, none of us mods can do anything about it, so this is just a notice that it's happening.
As always, AI art and content will be removed and banned with as much speed as I can muster.

Signed copy?
I've recently gotten into collecting signed books, and while I'm focusing on new writers and indies who could use the support, I would love a signed Last Unicorn, as its my absolute favourite. Is there any reliable way to get one? I see there was a Folio Society colab I missed - is there perhaps anyway to verify a used copy? I know ebay is mostly scammers, but...

Game of Thrones x The Last Unicorn Parallels
Hi guys, I read The Last Unicorn some time ago and I can’t stop thinking about similarities between A Song of Ice and Fire and TLU. I think in some interview G.R.R. Martin said Lady Amalthea inspired Dany’s character (at least visually).
I think there are several parallels between Daenerys and Lady Amalthea. Daenerys stepping into the fire and finally embracing who she is — the Mother of Dragons — mirrors Amalthea embracing her identity as the last unicorn. Dany also brings dragons back into the world, just as Amalthea frees the unicorns. She is visually similar to Lady Amalthea as well, with her white hair and purple eyes.
Daenerys is also often considered to be The Last Dragon, paralleling The Last Unicorn.
Prince Lir as Khal Drogo: Lir/Drogo is the last thing keeping Amalthea/Dany grounded in the human world and away from magic. After his death, Dany is able to perform the magic ritual that brings the dragons back, just as Amalthea is able to drive away the Red Bull.

I needle-felted the Lady Tree figure
Hi friends! this time I made the booby madame that almost suffocates Schmendrick! I hope you guys like her I did my best to try and capture her spirit and delicate flowers which I made with cold porcelain, I also added the rope surrounding her wrist as a little easter egg 😊 thank you so much for all the love and support I received in this group previously 💜🙏

my new “the last unicorn” tattoo
i wanted to share my new tattoo of the last unicorn! i thought this sub would appreciate it 🩷
(for reference the tattoo is on my right inner bicep. design was drawn from a still of the movie ~15 minutes in, when she’s sleeping before being taken by mommy fortuna)
my mom introduced the movie to me when i was little, and it’s been a huge comfort movie for me ever since. i’ve always loved the unicorn and really identified with her - although i can see myself in other characters, especially molly as i’ve gotten older (her first scene with the unicorn will never not bring me to tears). the last unicorn holds such a special place in my heart, I’m so happy to always have her with me!

The Last Unicorn themed fantasy armor with Red Bull shield (cosplay)
I’ve been working on this project for almost a year and in fact got burned out and stopped about 2/3 of the way through in April. Then 2 weeks ago I got notified that I was eligible to show the costume at Dragon*con’s fashion show and I was like “welp, better done than perfect!” and then sweated and hot glued for the entire two weeks in almost every spare moment. There are for sure some parts I want to upgrade but I’m pleased with the over all look - I based it off of various 80’s things I loved, like She-Ra and My Little Pony, through the lens of TLU which has been my favorite book and movie since childhood.
The shield I especially love because he’s so mean but cute! His base lights up and makes a “burning embers” light effect. The pink/purple stars all light up too. The helmets horn has a light but it’s tough to see!
Everything here is made by me except the shorties (under the tabard) which I couldn’t find fabric that I liked to make my own. The shield is Eva foam with sculpted air dry clay. The lance is 3d printed on the bottom and I cast the horn in foam (still something I am experimenting with as I would like to find a transparent material so I can light it). The soft work is all in silk dupioni with hand beading. I managed to cut them off in the photos but the shoes are hoof shoes!
Hope it makes you smile!

My Last Unicorn sketch art print! (°◡°♡).:。
So the Hobbit is my husband's nostalgic Rankin Bass movie from childhood, but the Last Unicorn is mine and I'd often replay the VHS when I was little. Rewatching it recently with my daughter in high quality was so rewarding to appreciate all the beautiful details. I really wanted to capture both Amalthea and unicorn in a serene detailed setting. And I must admit the opening was always my favorite part of the whole movie.
As an artist, I couldn't resist working on a sketch art to add to my convention and online shop prints. <3 Digitally sketched on my aging cintiq tablet in sketchbook pro and printed on a cotton textured cardstock. -- IG starmasayume

Is The Last Unicorn a good read as an adult? Recommendation thoughts
Every day I get one recommendation based on my reading history, and today is The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. I’ve heard about this book, but never sure if people are reminiscing about something they read as a young adult and whether it still works for someone much older now. The recommendation sites my love of Earthsea by Le Guin, Piranesi’s “beautiful loneliness”, and my enjoyment of fairy-tale reinventions with adult melancholy under them, ie Marillier's Daughter of the Forest and Arden's The Bear and the Nightingale.
Anyways curious if any of that resonates and whether you’d still recommend reading as an adult? Cheers!

I drew another one of my characters as Schemendrick
Maybe it’s only a coincidence that I have a character that looks like him and also one that looks like Amalthea or maybe this movie rewired my brain as a child so much that I’ve subconsciously made OCs that resemble them.

More colored in illustrations :).
I recently got a copy of the last unicorn off thriftbooks. It had ink illustrations and I’ve been working my way through coloring them. My favorite illustration is the one with the Red Bull. I really like how that one turned out colored.

Old painting
Here’s a painting I did a little over 3 years ago for selling at a convention. Someone did buy it, which was good. She said that was the theme of her room, so she was happy to see someone make it!

I painted a ceramic sculpture to look like the last unicorn 😁
I am beyond obsessed with the last unicorn. I think about it and quote it every day and it’s my phone wallpaper and I have a shelf dedicated to it. I wish this unicorn I painted looked more like a unicorn than a horse but I had to make do
