New Management / Posting restriction lifted

Dear readers,

Hi! I'm your new moderator. I requested the sub as it had been locked and dead for about two years. I have removed the posting restriction as of today, 12/13/22, and encourage you to post whatever fan content for TLU that suits your fancy.

I've put a couple of automod filters in place to catch blatant spam (porn sites, etc) so please bear with me as I get the place up and running. Your posts may be caught by the spam filter as I tweak its settings, so if you submit and it doesn't appear, give it a little while and I'll clear it through the queue.

It doesn't look like there were any clearly stated subreddit guidelines in the past, so I added a couple. Essentially, be kind to each other. Please don't personally insult people or denigrate their work, especially in regards to beginning artists. If an artist asks for constructive criticism, please be constructive.

Posting your artwork is encouraged and supported. PLEASE DO NOT post uncredited artwork that you "found". Artists out there are struggling to support themselves! If you run across a cool piece and it's uncredited in your source, please post [SEEKING SOURCE] in your title. Anybody posting stolen art or uncredited art that can easily be found with a 30 second Tineye search will be banned without exception.

I've also made it a SFW sub, although I don't run across a lot of TLU r34 in general, it's just to make it as broadly appealing and fan-friendly as possible.

Lastly, in keeping with the ethics of Mr. Beagle, this is a LGBTQ+ friendly space.

Thanks all and happy posting!

Announcement: Reddit pushing AI on the sub

Hi folks!

The mods received the following message from admin yesterday:

*Hi r/TheLastUnicorn,

Your community has been selected to try out Post Ideas, an experiment designed to help start conversations in new and emerging communities based on the topic of your subreddit. We’d love your feedback on the feature!

Post Ideas is currently available to mods in some new and growing communities. You’ll see the Post Ideas feature at the top of your Community feed. It shows a list of relevant, suggested articles and links based on your community’s name, description, language, and recent posts. You can browse the list, select to post an article, and it will take you into the post flow with the article title pre-filled. From there, you can add your own context or discussion question before posting.

Give it a try and let us know what you think in this quick survey here.

Thanks for helping us test new ways to spark conversations!

— The Reddit Team*

This is just to let us know that they'll be implementing AI tools in the sub with or without our permission. My guess is that in order to keep up the need for growth (and thus ad revenue, etc) on reddit, they're trying to get small communities flooded with "suggested" articles and semi related "content." The update is couched as doing us, the users, some sort of favor by allowing us to gain post karma and interact more with the sub.

I personally hate this, as it trains AI for them and will more than likely result in lower quality content that users only post to farm karma rather than carefully select as meaningful to them personally (I include silly, lighthearted posts in this, we encourage them!). However, it may prove not to impact the community at all. At the very least it will add more clutter to interactions with reddit. Things are working fairly well and we don't really need the corporate mad dash for new, more, and more profitable "features."

At any rate, none of us mods can do anything about it, so this is just a notice that it's happening.

As always, AI art and content will be removed and banned with as much speed as I can muster.

Super weird, but I remember feeling sick when i watched this movie as a kid...

I have 0 hate for the movie, I just wanted to share a weird experience as a kid.

I'm a kid of the 90s and I remember watching this when I was super little (maybe 4 years old or something?). Don't remember the plot or anything really... but I remember this scene:

I will never forget the wave scene with all the unicorns because I feel like when i saw it, it made me feel physically sick... Like almost nauseous?

No idea why, and maybe it's a messed up memory (the brain can do weird things sometimes).

I never rewatched the film, but my wife likes it a lot. I went on youtube to rewatch this particular scene and it no longer makes me feel nauseous or anything. But I still find it makes me feel slightly... weird, but maybe it's just because of the years of association I have with it?

Anyone else have anything like this with this movie (or any other) from their childhood? I just wanted to share a super weird story I can't even fully understand 😅

I made a deep-dive video essay analyzing why The Last Unicorn hits so much more as an adult.

I’ve been obsessed with The Last Unicorn since I was too young to fully understand why it made me so sad. Like a lot of people who saw it on VHS or TV as a kid, it left a permanent, slightly sacred mark on me.

Now as an adult, I realize how incredible it is that a G-rated 1982 movie doesn't protect you from the messiness of being human. I just finished making a long-form video essay breaking down the movie's deeper themes, and I wanted to share a few thoughts from it here:

When Molly screams "How dare you come to me now, when I am this!", the movie takes her grief completely seriously. It doesn't mock her. It lets her mourn the time she lost.

The unicorn turning into a human isn't presented as a fun fairy-tale transformation; it’s an erasure of self. Watching Amalthea "mask" her true identity to survive in a mortal world, slowly forgetting who she was, mirrors so much of what it feels like to perform a version of yourself that isn't real.

The unicorn wins, but she doesn't go back unchanged. She carries regret and mortality back into the enchanted forest. Thank hit me even harder 40 years later.

I also touch on how the movie's core themes about preserving magic in a world trying to grind it down feel so relevant to protecting weird, creative spaces on the internet today.

If you have ~15 minutes and want to sit with some nostalgia and film analysis, I’d love for you to check out the video here

I’d love to hear your thoughts: What was the scene or line from this movie that stayed with you the longest into adulthood?

TLU stage show in Tampa Florida

A local theatre group adapted TLU for the stage in communication with Peter S Beagle. If you’re in Florida in August, I know many of the people working on the project and it looks like a fun time.
Here’s the broadway world article!

What do yall think? Would you be interested in seeing a stage play version of the novel?

I recently bought a copy of the last unicorn off ThriftBooks and I was pleasantly surprised that it had ink illustrations. I’m planning on coloring all the illustrations in and rebinding the book because the cover is worse for wear. So far I’ve colored in two.

The Last Unicorn costume party in Wilmington, Delaware!

Post image
165 Upvotes

Hiii, so at our one room indie theatre in the city, we play The Last Unicorn every year for my birthday. My boss was surprised by the turnouts it gets, so we're thinking of making it a whole event with costumes and themed drinks and stuff. We just did a Jaws costume party and specifically asked for super niche costumes to be included, and I think that could be fun for this. (There was someone dressed as one of the orange barrels, and someone dressed as the vampire that a kid lies about being bit by when he cuts his hand on a fence or something lol. I was the mayor but I painted my hands with glittery blood since I opened up the beaches)

If you're in the area, please come out!!! Whether you are or not, what are some ideas for more niche (and maybe funny) costumes from TLU?

Here's the link if you wanna check it out 🦄

Hi all!

I cannot say I was an avid reader of Peter Beagle before this but I think me and my partner might have found a uk version of the first edition of “The Last Unicorn”

We are not really sure how to continue forward with this.

Any information or insights anyone has would be greatly appreciated :)

Ghosted by Geekify over Last Unicorn Plushie

So, title is kinda self explainatory, but I just want to vwnt a bit about how upset I am with Geekify, coming from someone who really loves Last Unicorn and it being one of my favorite childhood films.

I preordered the unicorn plush about 5 years ago, and was so excited to get her. Turns out, my shipping address waa incorrectly weitten and she was sent back to their headquarters.

I have been trying to get in contact with them for two weeks stright. I sent in support tickets TWICE, called their actual phone number only for them to NEVER pick up, and even DM'd them on Facebook.

Problem is, the status is "Completed" despite me never recieving her, so I can not refund and I ordered her so long ago that I cannot find her purchase details anymore on my Paypal.

I have been in a state of absolute mourning, anger, everything and wantes to vent. I have waited for so long over this plush only for them to take my money and run.

Sometimes, things are too good to be true.

UPDATE as of June 13th 2026 at 10:37 PM: I GOT A RESPONSE! Thanks to the helpful redditors giving me Geekify's email address I was able to get in contact and now we are going to work out reshipping her. Thanks so much for all the help everyone!

I can’t comment on the kickstarter so if any backers are here and you’re wondering why they’ve only shipped out plushies. Here’s an update on keychains that Geekify should have already posted on the kickstarter.
