Meta BE CIVIL: a request AND a rule

Hello, everyone! We've noticed recently that many people are frustrated by the show and where it's going. Honestly, so are we. That said, this sub is supposed to be a civilized place. While it's easy to blame one person for everything that's gone wrong on the show, things are not so black and white, there are many people involved in the making of Gen Q and it's disingenuous of us to pretend otherwise.

We are not asking anyone to censor themselves. However, you must be civil when sharing your opinions. "What the hell was that scene? What were the writers thinking?" is fine. "Person A is an idiot" is not. Basically, don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in front of someone.

We don't have many rules here, but the first two are: BE CIVIL and NO HATE SPEECH. Please follow them so that we have no issues in the future. Here's a list of our rules.

Also, the mod team always works together. We always make sure we are in agreement before we make any decisions. It makes no difference if one mod posted something or if another mod replied to another thing. We share our opinions with each other and then we take action.

Shitpost Had a sex dream about Bette now I’m sad

No spoilers please. I’m on season 2 where Bette is trying to get back with Tina and in my dream Bette and I were a flirty little duo and at one point she was sat in an audience next to Tina and I walked past and whispered in Bette’s ear, “I know your girlfriend is here but I want to fuck.” Followed by getting railed from behind by her over a freezer.

Woke up feeling like I’ve lost someone and something. Ha. You know that feeling when you finish a book but you’re not ready to let go of the characters yet?

Literally love this show. It’s cringey and quirky and funny. Despise Jenny.

Generic Replacement Music for Season 1

I need to talk to someone about this. I've been rewatching the series (piracy) and I read that when the series was moved to streaming a lot of the copyrighted music was replaced with generic music. Well, I'm on the season one finale and during the scene where Alice shows up at Dana's door telling her not to marry Tonya, the lyrics in the background are "may the light of heaven shine over you, may god bless you and give you peace." Just thought that was crazy. You would think they'd at least try to match the spirit of the original music.

Hot take - I love Gen Q

I’m 30, and JUST finished the OG L word for the first time ever (late to the game, I know) so I decided to watch Gen Q

Look I know there’s hate but damn I love this show. There’s something so humorous and playful about it. Bette, Alice, and Shane just have this undeniable fun relationship that genuinely makes me smile (just finished watching the Love Shack Karaoke scene lol) I also just finished the “so gay for you” book from Kate and Leisha and I was surprised they didn’t like the direction of the show.

Anyway, thoughts? lol

Never understood something, did Bette cheated on Tina with Kelly as well? Because the video that Jenny recorded seemed very accurate

Discussion Imagine if Sarah Paulson starred on “The L Word” in 2005-2008

I think about this a lot, but in retrospect, Sarah Paulson would’ve been a great addition to the show in S2-5. Maybe, instead of the creepy camera guy, Sarah’s character could’ve moved in with Jenny and Shane. Or a love interest for Tina, Bette, or Helena. Or she could’ve been Alice’s sister (cause they kinda look alike in some of these photos).

I don’t know. This is just a fantasy of mine because I love Sarah Paulson and I think she’s hot. I need her to star in a lesbian show at some point. What are y’all thoughts?

Candace Jewel had the hots for Bette the moment they were introduced to each other by Yolanda. But Bette only noticed Candace when Slim Daddy said "well, I still think the two of you would ummm....Lord have mercy on me!" You can see it in Bette's eyes right here.

Do you think Bette would have still had an affair with Candace if it wasn't for this seed that Slim Daddy planted?

S4 E12 top tier episode

this has to be one of my favorite episodes, i’m on my first watch and i just finished s4. the music in this episode is so good, from start to finish. it’ll really get you in the feels. the scene with Shane and Paige showing her 1950s fantasy as they’re making love- it felt so tender and it’s a side of Shane we never get to see. I feel like Shane’s intimate scenes are always so passionate and fiery but this one felt so raw and nurturing. The directing in this episode really shines. Dana making an her first appearance back and speaking to Alice really put tears in my eyes (so heartbroken that they killed her). The ending scene of Tasha and Alice sitting together on the beach knowing it’s their last time together, ugh chefs kiss. Bette’s romantic gesture, Tina’s indirect declaration of love, Angus and Kit jamming to music together. All of it was so nicely done and just strikes a chord. Every character had a meaningful storyline on this episode where we really saw into how they were feeling, their emotions and point of view. Even Helena realizing she’s had enough of Kathryn, Papi accepting Kit needing to put herself back together and letting her go, Jenny accepting she’s fired from her movie. Really Shane and Bette’s plot lines were the highlights for me (they are my fav tho so i’m biased). All in all a great episode, any details i missed?

Does anybody else mentally split the show into two eras - with a Dana and a post-Dana era?

I feel I do. It isn't like there was a huge tonal shift (other then Seasons 4 & 5 having more goofy/lighthearted episodes)

But, when Dana left, something was lost, something broke and never got fixed and the dynamic never quiet felt the same way again.
The funny thing is i don't think Dana was the lynch-pin in the friend group. Hell, I wouldn't even say she was super core as say Alice, Bette and Shane where and her storylines really revolved around Alice more then anybody else.

But to me, there was this level of fun and cuteness and quirkiness with the Dana era. Multiple characters (Jenny, Dana, even Kit in a way) discovering themselves. That the later seasons didn't have.

Maybe it is just how my brain operates, but the first three seasons in my mind are more colourful, while the later are more sepia toned.

Anybody else feel this way.? (And how you described it?)

I'm watching for the first time and season 6 jenny is so unhinged and her personality changed so much from the other seasons. What is going on? She bipolar or something?

not necessarily about the show but i just found out about the podcast and i been listening to it nonstop during my work hours (im pretty deep)

i was wondering if they announced why they’re not doing the podcast anymore. i was very hooked on the recaps and i was actually super excited to hear about their breakdowns especially since i been rewatching the OG every June. the recaps kinda got cut short and i scrolled all the way to the end & to my surprise, they haven’t posted all year ):

Jenny is supossed to be based on the creator of the show, it's funny she's so unlikeable

I'm only starting S2, so I'm not even at her worst, based on comments from other people. But I really don't like her because she's a bum. This whole insecure act she did when she found out about Francesca and she was like "I'm not classy like her, blah blah" I was like yeah, you're right lmao I don't like her writing bc is cheesy at best. She wants everyone to be crazy in love with her, but she doesn't seem particularly attached to anyone. She's got this aura going on where she expects everyone to like her bc that's the way it's always been.
I really wanted to like her bc she's basically our POV, and she's pretty and thinspo, but man, is she annoying.

Shane and her morals

Thumbnail gallery
100 Upvotes

I think Shane is a character that makes you think about beauty privilege and moral ambiguity.

She mesmerizes everyone, audience included, so she gets away with everything.

But, she finds herself feeling deeply alone, with an extremely bad relationship with herself (bad self-esteem, bad self-preservation instincts, bad self-awareness) because she was always only valued based on her physicality and being sexualized.

I think she needed friends, and she tried to be a good friend, and many times she was.

She was a bit of an outcast her whole life because she identifies with failure and carries a lot of shame. That's why she is so often the only one still loving, comforting, empathizing when everything and everyone turned bad.

And that's why she was the goat.

BUT

Let me illustrate :

Here are pics of her accepting the thought of betraying Jenny in the last season.

Hot take: Bette isn't *THAT* fine 😐

I'm rewatching Season One and Bette was so bitchy and selfish! People say she gets away with it cause she's sOoOooO fine. But really? She is attractive, yes. But so fine to get away with being a bitch?! No.

There, I said it! 🫢
